Russell Westbrook might be the best player who’s the worst for his team

https://deadspin.com/russell-westbrook-might-be-the-best-player-who-s-the-wo-1846661812

Russell Westbrook is averaging 24/12/12 and 5.4 turnovers in the last 30 days (17 games). With him ON the court in that span, his team is outscored by 8 points per 100 possession — 3rd worst by a Wizards rotation player. They are outscored by 2.7 points when he’s OFF the court.

In the last few seasons, Westbrook’s plus-minus numbers in the playoffs we’re atrocious. He was a -37 in the 2020 playoffs, a -43 in the 2019 playoffs, and -36 in the 2018 playoffs, according to StatMuse.

He’s a tenacious player who can impact every aspect of the game, but his efficiency and decision-making have always left question marks. And in the most skilled era of basketball ever, those things are hard to win with.

Me! Me! Me! Yeah I’ve known this for a long time. All those Blazers wins vs Russ by just letting him “take over” down the stretch made it crystal clear.

Emptiest numbers of all time. High scoring on inefficient shooting, high rebounds by snatching all the easy ones that teammates otherwise would have gotten, high assists by insisting on dominating the ball and only passing if it's an assist opportunity.

The only type of team Westbrook fits on is one with no other top-end talent. He doesn't add to other talent, he just carves his numbers out of the production they would have put up without him.

All for the low, low cost of a max contract.

Yeah he’s a fucking bum anyway I haven’t gotten up from the couch today.

Next stop Hall of Fame.

Next stop Hall of Fame.

Yup, his statistics definitely warrant it. He obviously doesn't help a team win a title, but there are various ways to earn a Hall of Fame berth.

Next stop Hall of Fame.

Yeah he does things that nobody else can (seasons of triple-doubles, etc.). Unfortunately, leading a team to a championship or serious contention does not appear to be one of those things he can do.
