It's been known for a long time that scrubs who had to learn every trick to survive make better coaches than stars to whom everything came easily. For example, Phil Jackson and Pat Riley were journeymen.
I thought of Sloan and Wooden as I wrote that. I left out Sloan because he was an odd hybrid, a starter due to toughness, not super-smooth silky skills. I left out Wooden because he's an exception to the rule.
And according to ESPN, he's a better player than Michael Beasley. I saw Beasley dominate the Lakers last year. Never seen Jeffries do anything like that.
