Ex-Blazer LeRoy Ellis Passes Away.....

ORIGINAL TRAIL BLAZER LEROY ELLIS PASSES AWAY

PORTLAND, Ore. - Former Portland Trail Blazers center/forward LeRoy Ellis passed away today in Portland at the age of 72 after a long battle with cancer.

"LeRoy Ellis was a very important member of the first Trail Blazers team and was a very high-class individual," said Trail Blazers Founder and President Emeritus Harry Glickman. "We extend our deepest sympathy to his family."

A member of Portland's inaugural basketball team, Ellis was selected by the Trail Blazers in the 1970 NBA Expansion Draft. Ellis led Portland with 12.3 rebounds per game and ranked third on the team with a 15.9 scoring average in 1970-71, his only season with the Trail Blazers.

Ellis is one of four Trail Blazers to record three 20-point, 20-rebound games in the same season (M. Lucas, B. Walton, S. Wicks). His 26 rebounds vs. Buffalo on Oct. 27, 1970, in the seventh game in team history, are still tied for the most by a Trail Blazer in a regulation game.

Ellis appeared in 1,048 NBA games over 14 seasons with the L.A. Lakers, Baltimore, Portland and Philadelphia. He posted career averages of 9.7 points and 8.3 rebounds, and was a member of the 1972 NBA Champion L.A. Lakers.

A New York native, Ellis played his collegiate basketball at St. John's University. He was selected by the Lakers with the sixth overall pick in the 1962 NBA Draft.

Ellis and his family settled in Portland during his NBA career and continued to live in the area after he retired from the NBA.

merge HCP's post with mine, I got it first.
Btw, interesting to think that he played in Portland 1 year, but decided to live here after his playing days.

RIP.

Honestly, I don't know a lot about him.

My dad still references him and has a lot of respect for him. Thanks for your contributions to the Portland franchise and in life.

Hey, the players who got to really know this place.... A lot loved it. They were treated like royalty and revered, so why not? For those who don't live here year-round... Many still seem to at least maintain a second home here. That says something about our site and community.

Used to have his autograph from the inaugural Blazer season. Lost them some years ago. Had Leroy, Dale Schulter, Petrie and a couple of others.

Gramps...

Who wrote this and what site did it come from?

It's an internal email sent out to Blazer employees just prior to being released to the press......... Fuck off!

Re: Ex-Blazer LeRoy Ellis Passes Away.....

This is the second time I've said anything about it and both times I've been actually wondering.. You answered both times with incredible snark. SlyPokerDog needs to stop being a childish asshole, I don't give a flying fuck about his mood.

Just read what's posted..... reply or move on. SlyPokerDog is a fool!

Not trying to run this forum, but for your info, people do listen to me on here and for a good reason. Now go away.

Re: Ex-Blazer LeRoy Ellis Passes Away.....

Once again SlyPokerDog is acting like he has some authority over this forum. He needs to stop trying to tell people what to do, no one is going to listen to him, and for good reason.

I agree! This SlyPokerDog is a power hungry bastard!

Way to ruin a post intended to pay respect to one of the first Blazers, and a true fan of the City of Portland.

Slypoker dog is a dumbass.... In 3....2....1.....

LOL! You know, I try to be cool in how I tell people to stop with the personal insults but sometimes it's like beating your head against a wall.

Unfortunate this thread was derailed. Ellis will be missed.

You should remember, Portland is not a place for rich young African Americans. :devilwink:

Sometimes i wonder why some people look down upon sports fans, saying how they're losers.

Then I read threads that started off talking about a guy who died and it turned into another one of the gems we create here.

There's a time and a place for this behavior, I would hope by the time you're over 18, you realize it's not in a thread about someone's death.

I had a chance to meet him several times when I was in high school. Before moving to Mater Dei high school, I played high school ball with his sons, Leroy and Leron. Good guy

Who deleted Secret Agent's post? Inquiring minds want to read it. Shouldn't delete posts. Always remember the board motto, "Anything goes." Live by it, die for it.

LeRoy Ellis played with many legends of the 60s. His one Blazer year was his 9th year in the league, so he was no rookie here. They needed him and shouldn't have traded him to the Lakers. He wasn't the guy who won the Lakers 33 in a row, but he held the fort while Chamberlain rested. That summer, they traded him for Bill Bridges, who had been a star PF, and Jerry West and Chic Hearn kept saying, "This is a guy who can really help us." But Bridges with the Lakers kept getting injured because he was old. Meanwhile Ellis started on the worst NBA team in history with 9 wins. When Philadelphia with Ellis played the Lakers, he had a quote, I can't remember the exact resentful words, to the effect that he felt betrayed by his so-called friends, the Laker GM and coach, for dumping him from the top of the league to the bottom.

When you read about secret agents, you must read between the lines, and not believe the official story.

I don't believe the Secret Agent suicide. I think Sly knows the truth.

LeRoy Ellis was the father Of 1991 1st-round pick LeRon Ellis.

Ellis lived and died in Portland. In Greg Oden's 5 years as a Blazer, I wonder whether he ever met former Blazer centers like Ellis or Walton. I bet Ellis wanted to know him. I have the feeling Oden lived in hiding and avoided Oregon except when Pritchard woke up from a snooze and made him fly here.

The local media should have called Ellis for quotes a few times each season. Think of the stories he had about rookie Wes Unseld taking his starting job on the Bullets, playing with West and Baylor early in their careers, etc. Instead the local media just writes the same old daily negative garbage about not having a GM, etc. Who cares. When Ellis died yesterday they lost a LOT of good material.

Secret Agent Man deleted his own posts and told me via PM he's going to take a break from the forum for a little while.

Oh yeah right!!!!

A secret agent just decided to go away?

Way too simple!! You need a much more complicated story!!!

You killed him and you know you did!!!!

He lived out in tiny Columbia City, my uncle owns townhouses out there and said he'd always see him around. Kinda hard to miss, he's probably the only black man in Columbia County.
