Adrian Jess Kramer, who was convicted last week of chopping off part of Fred Meyer security guard's ear with a hatchet, was sentenced Wednesday to 35 years in prison.
Kramer was stealing a shopping cart of merchandise Dec. 11 when he attacked guard David Sullivan just outside the Ocean Beach Highway store, which was crammed with holiday shoppers.
Cowlitz Superior Court Judge Michael Evans noted that Kramer will be 66 before he is released from prison. The judge said the attack was unlike "anything I've seen in recent history."
"You took something from this community that can't be given back," Evans told Kramer. "Shame on you."
"The message has to be sent," Evans continued. "Something like this cannot happen again. It cannot happen again, and I'm sending a strong message."
Kramer, 31, of Longview, apologized to the community during the sentencing hearing.
"I am sorry the crime I committed in your town has caused some or all of you to fear shopping at Fred Meyer," Kramer said, beginning to cry as he read from a letter. "My intention was petty theft to support a drug habit. ... I wish I could take back all aspects to this crime."
I was thinking 15 - 20 year conviction but dang!
