Free agent press conference

I have a lot of the same questions, just don't think it was the time to discuss them. They didn't bring the players up there to just ask Joe a bunch of salary cap questions.

Joe's availability for those questions is another subject entirely. I think he needs to do that.
No GMs make themselves publicly available for those kinds of questions, so despite your ideas of decorum at a press conference, the only time to ask him those questions was today or if he makes another deal and calls a press conference that you would again say was about that deal and not other pertinent questions. So when would those questions get asked? They typically get asked at these types of press conferences and it's not seen as disrespectful especially because this press conference was about introducing players that we used cap space on. Also, who cares what the team wants? Taking that into consideration is not good manners, it's bad journalism. What you're advocating is the team getting to set the narrative.

are you certain about that?

the balance of his contract is automatically stretched. It's Portland's option if it's a 1 year hit on their cap, or a 3 year hit, and either way it isn't calculated until the end of the regular season in order to see if another team picks him up and for how much money. Would make a lot more snse if the Blazers could know all that before they commit to stretching. Of course the CBA doesn't always have to make sense
I'll graciously admit I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the decision to stretch has to be made at the time of the transaction. Like when they stretched Nicholson, they weren't able to wait to see if it worked out better for them that season to not do it.

Asking Cronin if the plan is to stretch Eric Bledsoe's dead cap hit or to just take a one year hit with it doesn't insult any of the people there, but his answer would be telling as to how they're approaching the cap this year.

Given what you're doing have you ever considered meeting the guy and doing the reporting on it yourself...maybe actually asking him outside of the National TV platform? You guys need connections to get better access. They also have a contact tab on their website where you could ask them for an interview....your website is legit..it should open that door for you with a bit of effort. I doubt Cronin listens to your youtube channel but if you used the website as a credential, you might get to go to a practice even. Something that might open doors for you. Marang pissed off Neil and got blacklisted...he's back at practices under Cronin and interviewed him there. This was before he got the radio gig I believe...he also interviews Ant, Nas and others on his channel...you guys might want to lean that direction and like him or not...learn from him. Blazers Edge guy lost his access harping about Chauncey's old harassment case in Boston. There are politics involved in team coverage and if you don't adapt, you get iced out..big picture...better to have an in than be left out of the mix.

Seriously, I think GP2 was a good signing, just a puzzling one considering the makeup of the roster. I think the Grant trade was brilliant. I thought the Nurk contract was an overpay but I'm over that. Same with Ant. I just hope both of them perform at a level that keeps them as positive trade assets should an opportunity arise in which that would be necessary. I really like Joe's attitude and think he ended up getting enough out of the CJ/Larry deal and may have been pressured into the absolutely horrible Norm/RoCo deal by ownership.

I guess I'm just an asshole for thinking he should have been asked about hard capping us and what his thoughts about the luxury tax are this season, since he is a cap expert but fuck anyone with any criticism though right?

There are ways to ask the questions without coming off like an asshole.

A true journalist isn't going to be like, "Hey Joe, why the fuck would you hard cap us for Gary fucking Payton II?

They would say, "now that you're hard capped, how is that going to impact your ability to make moves this season? How did you weigh the pros and cons of the hard cap when offering the MLE?"

There's professional ways of getting what you want without sounding like a jaded asshole.

He has that access because of his show on the the network that had the games. He got connections from that.

Do you honestly think we wouldn't try?

Y'all shoulda gone to Vegas bro. I hear the access there is insane.

I think you should try Eric...which is why I encourage it. Marang had no show when he got his credentials he made his connections through Blazers Edge which is like saying you make your credentials from S2.......however he did it...he did in fact ask for credentials. They gave him a show from starting out as a poster on a website. When he posted here he had nothing going on ..I'd listen to the guys who are making it work now as opposed to the guys who failed at it or just packed it in. We're talking about a new front office.

I'm pulling for you guys to get creds, but it's such a time suck. Practices are usually around like 11am. You need to get to the Garden by like 4:30pm to catch guys when they're hanging in the locker room and then you're not out of the Garden until 10:30-11pm. It's a big time commitment and I ultimately decided that I was tired of chasing it without much pay.

We've tried. More times than we can count. We'll keep trying. Don't need encouragement for that, ha ha.
Well.....I tried...usually when I get encouraged from someone I thank them....but you seem to have it covered. (haha?)

This isn't encouragement though. They have tried to get credentials and haven't been successful.

This is like telling someone who is trying to be an actor that they need to just go get a big time movie role. It's a frustrating thing to hear if you're already trying.

That's hardly a fair comparison...it's more like, encouraging someone to find a connection outside the press pass group and asking for an interview for their own purposes..not asking for Casey's job. If they have a pleasant experience in that interview they'll probably get on your contact list but if not...you just blow an opportunity . Still encouraging someone is not a frustration trigger if they are organized enough to have built a brand of their own already ...which Eric has I understand it doesn't encourage you but you didn't build that brand and actually discouraged it from your own experience of being time consuming...choices..I get the impression Eric is actually motivated.

I don't think you understand how hard it is to gain access. It's really not that easy. This is not an industry that you have any background or knowledge so kindly stop acting like it's simple or easy.

I never said anything about simple and easy....at all. I do have knowledge of how to get access to people who can advance my career...I've built one from the ground up that was very successful, but you don't need to put any value on that. I'm not selling anything here.

This is the most boomer series of posts I have ever seen.

Just pull yourself up by your bootstraps @hoopsjock and @BonesJones

Why didn’t everybody love him the last time he was with us?

I said when the year he entered the draft he’d be great fit. Watched most of his games as Beaver. Off the charts IQ and athleticism only knock was his outside shot. We are going to love his energy every team needs a guy like him who can being energy and effort to the game.

well got your attention ....I have no issue with Eric or Torey but you can try and make this a group chuckle ..or maybe give them some of your vast expertise at how to give up on their dream gig...choices. We're done ....thought maybe that'd changed over the season but nah.....

They're doing it. They're putting in the work. They're building their reach. They're gathering sources and breaking news. That's how you do it. They have to prove to the Blazers that they're a legit news source and not just fans talking about the team.

It's insulting that you think they just need to, you know, try to get credentials. That's not helpful or encouraging. Just tell them you like their show and help expand their reach by telling other people about their show.

Raking over the coals to find out if we want to duck the tax? Exaggerate much?

Good grief. Dial back the righteous indignation a couple of clicks. I’m only giving you my take on what kinds of things are typically discussed at Blazers player introduction press conferences. I’ve followed the Blazers for fifty years or so and I have never seen the press in Portland dig in on contract and CBA details at this type of event. I get that a lot of us have questions that we’d like to get Cronin to answer, but to use his former boss’s lingo, many of those details are “proprietary” in that they can impact future negotiations and Cronin’s not under any obligation to share that information with the public.

I said they need to go outside the credentials and start by getting interviews...and that Eric's website is as professional and well written as any out there in my view...my point was don't let that stop you from asking for interviews for the website.....I don't think the youtube channel is the venue...it's not presented like the website is at all. I have steered people to the website...I don't enjoy the youtube channel but that's a choice. I give it a try but it's never kept my attention. Getting interviews is how I thought they could end up with credentials but someone mentioned, summer league is the best place to start . Anybody can go to summer league. Now if you have any advice for them as far as gaining access, maybe that would be a good thing to post instead of picking my opinions apart.
