FREELAND to NBA after Olympics likely

This would be like getting Sabonis in his prime! (not)

Nice interview. I like his attitude. I bet he would be a lottery pick in last year's draft.

Sounds as if he doesn't want to be in a NBA situation where he has no role, though. That said, the opportunity is here for him to get 20 minutes backing up Oden and LMA, or even being a starter in the worst-case Oden leaves/is injured again scenario.

“I don’t want to go over there, ride the pine and hide my face on TV. That’s not what I want. I want to be a player who can contribute. And when I feel that is available, that’s when I’ll go.”

LA is the new Duncan, Freeland is the new Splitter. huh.

Regardless, this is good news. I'm really surprised by how much he has developed from that summer league 3-4 years ago.

I view him as a 10 minute guy / 4th big type so I'm not sure his NBA future is with the Blazers.

He just looks a little predictable offensively where he relies heavily on his face-up game, but the problem is he is very right hand dominant. His low bpg numbers and just watching him move around on D has me thinking that he'd average at best on that end in the nba.

I'm excited about him mostly because he plays more like an NBA player than a Euro. His rebounding is also quite good and he is very mobile for a big. His upside is Przybilla on D mixed with average O. If he gets close to that, I will be thrilled. Either way, it will be fun to see how he shakes out.

Any video of him dribbling down the floor and shooting from outside while everyone clears out for him? Don't need any more teamball Euros who can't play Blazer Ball.

He's a PF, so I don't care about his face-up game or dominance on the block. What are his shooting %'s from the corner 3 and the 16-22foot jumper?

Is it not true that he will be a free agent and NOT required to come to the Blazers?

However he is set to seek opportunities to try his luck Stateside when he obtains free agent status next summer.

I'm not certain, but I believe he has to go to the Blazers unless he takes a year off of basketball completely. He will however, be able to negotiate a contract other than the rookie scale contract that he would have been required to use previously. This is how I understand things, but I am often wrong.

That was the case with the last CBA and doubt that changes.

The free agency the quote refers to is European free agency. He's free to sign with any euro team, or with the blazers. Or, I suppose, any team in China, Korea, Bangladesh, etc.

Well they better start sizing him for his championship ring. #BoomDynasty!!!

That's how I understood the quote as well.

Denny's really going to be bringing in some serious British traffic to this site when he signs here, much like with the Aussies when Patty came

Until they are signed, these players do not count against a team's salary cap or take up a valuable roster spot. Their draft rights are held in perpetuity -- that is, until a team decides to relinquish them or sign the player. (Similarly, if an NBA restricted free agent elects to go overseas rather than sign his qualifying offer -- such as Denver's Linas Kleiza last season or Atlanta's Josh Childress the year before -- the team continues to hold the right of first refusal for as long as it chooses.)

I guess this clears it up. This SI article is one of many that professes that rights do not expire. I seem to remember that the rookie pay scale expires after a certain amount of time, but I'm not certain about that.

Freeland is having a miserable time of it playing for team GB. It doesn't help that Deng is essentially ball-hogging (he's the epitome of the role-player thrust into a starring role) and GB has zero good guards (Ben Gordon will have a field day if he actually decides to play in the London Olympics) so defenses can pack the paint. But the numbers ain't pretty. I wouldn't get too excited, to be honest.

Finally Freeland comes through! 27 and 11 in a win over Poland. GB might even advance!

I'm not sure how exactly the advancing works, but GB beat both Poland and Turkey, so regardless of what Turkey does against Spain now, GB should advance.

Sadly not. Apparently GB needed to beat Poland by 58 points! So even if Spain had beaten Turkey, Turkey would have gone through. But if Poland had beaten GB, Poland would have gone through ahead of Turkey. I think.

Still, glad Freeland had ONE good game.
