Renouncing his rights is silly, but I don't think that the Blazers WANT him to come over yet... so him staying in Spain or wherever for another couple of years is great.

Who gives a fuck about Joel Freeland? I really don't understand all of the love for this guy? Any number of low firsts, or second round picks, can more than likely give us the same production or more.



His close to 1 million dollar cap hold would be much more usefull going to Hedo Turkoglu in all honesty

Honestly, I find it very odd when people say "Who cares about such-and-such" when what they mean is "I don't care about such-and-such." The people who care are the people who talk about the subject (which, apparently, includes you).
 
It's a good example of why late 1st round picks are more risky than 2nd rounders on international players. The idea of stashing someone overseas doesn't work so well when it comes to 1st round cap holds. Given that long-term uncertainty, I agree with what I think Mediocre Man is getting at ... you're better off finding some minimum wage journey man for that level of production.

I think you're TOTALLY wrong. He's improved tremendously as a player since he was drafted and he's still quite young... younger than many of the guys who we would pick in the lower first/second round.

Will he give us anything THIS year? Almost certainly not. Because he won't be on the roster.

But in two years? Or three? I think it's quite likely that he will, and he will still be on the rookie scale contract, providing value for the team in the form of a cheap, athletic, experienced big man.

I am not sure that I agree, but having another use for the cap hold is the only reason to even contemplate renouncing his rights.

Most of the years, Portland will be over the salary cap and the cap hold will be irrelevant. This is an atypical offseason in that the team actually will have cap space. I doubt we see it again in the next five or six years, at least.

I looked the other day at medium skill PFs around the league to see if any trades/FAs made sense. I was pretty surprised at the limited talent. There really aren't many reasonable/pretty good players out there. The Mavs have pretty much said they will resign Bass. If Miami were to get Bosh, then Haselam (sp?) makes pretty good sense. I then thought, boy, I'm glad that Freeland is/will be available.

He'll be 23 in two weeks... you could make the case for him that he hasn't been playing basketball for a long time, but people have been saying that about raw big men for years without anything ever coming from it. Hopefully he'll eventually develop into a contributor, but it's not like he's some kid anymore.

I don't get it. It's as if some of you only want to bring in or discuss players that will help this season. And it seems the reason is that you're tired going after "potential" or "promise". It's as if you're tired of waiting and want your cake right now. Is the NBA closing its doors after next season or something?

You've got to prepare for today and tomorrow.

Maybe I'm missing the logic here, but if Freeland doesn't want to come over now because he can make more money in the Euroleague, why would he want to come over in two or three years, when he'll be even more developed and make even more money staying put?

I noticed that Tiago Splitter might considering coming over eventually to the Spurs.

Is it because they needed the most money early on to start living comfortably, and once they're more financially secure they're willing to earn less money in the NBA, so that they can then make the bigger pay day after the rookie contract?

I believe big men progress slower though. I remember a scout for the Blazers discussing this.

Well, if he comes over now he's going to be on a rookie contract and he's going to be at the end of the bench. Presumably when he decides to come over later in his career he'll be stepping into the rotation and contributing.

Money is very important, clearly, but without playing time somewhere the future earnings are pretty severely impaired, I am thinking.
