Glad to see something being actually done. Looks like it's includes some things we have been talking about here in this thread.
"Bipartisan" is funny to me, because it basically comes down to 10 R's actually doing something outside of what the NRA says they should do. That's fucking wild to me, as children and minorities are shot in cold blood by 18 year olds.

School resource officer shoots 'suspicious man' dead after he tried to enter a locked elementary school in Alabama
  • A 'suspicious man' was shot dead at Walnut Park Elementary school in Gadsden, Alabama, on Thursday
  • The man reportedly arrived on school property around 9.30am and 'aggressively' attempted to get inside vehicles and buildings
  • The school's resource officer responded to an assistance call and got into a physical altercation with the suspect when reported tried to get his gun
  • He then shot and killed the suspect. It is unclear if the suspect was additionally armed
  • The officer, who also works for Rainbow City Police, received minor injuries
  • Superintendent Tony Reddick said the school was locked down immediately and that the intruder never breached the school
  • He also said all the doors were locked and they do not let anyone without a 'pass' into the building at anytime

Have you ever been in Gadsen? I've been there a few times. That's where I found a sign saying Whites above one drinking fountain and Colored above another. I think most of them have half their teeth and are trigger happy. It doesn't surprise me that the suspect was shot dead.

True. I'm just glad enough of them came to their senses and to the table.

You sure seem to do a lot of laughing when it comes to guns. Just sayin.
Just at immature and illogical lies people tell themselves to make them feel better.

It's quite humorous.

Like your suggestion that anybody said the kind of deal that is being discussed here would never happen.

It's funny that you have to try and trick yourself like that. That's all.

My statement was "" The old "That will never happen" excuse needs to end"".

I don't think that statement says what you think it says? It most certainly is not a suggestion that this deal is what needs to happen or that anyone here said it wouldn't.
Maybe go back and read it again. Then please quit putting words into my mouth.

I again stand by my statement that HAS been said on this thread.

The old "That will never happen" excuse needs to end. (This is in reference to many statements that i feel are very valid. Many people feel this way).

I will add to that. "More...Much Much more needs to be done".

This is not a LOL matter to me. I will spare you the details. Just take my word for it. I feel it's more "Immature" and even more "Illogical" to think this is "Quite Humorous" and i also feel it is a "Lie" to tell yourself over and over again "It will never change" to make yourself "Feel Better" and "Trick Yourself" about it not changing.

Except it has been said in this thread while trying to advocate for some progress. Rather than holding out for things which will not happen, start focusing on things which can.

The suggestion has been to start working on things most people can agree on, funding schools and the mental health aspect. Possibly raising the age to purchase guns.

The implication you made was laughable. It still is.

I agree. Many people feel that way. When a large group of people act afool, as the gun control advocates and MAGA fools tend to do, I Iaugh at them.

Sure, a lot of what they both do costs lives. That's the reality of the world we live in. But their mental gymnastics need to be called out, and laughing at that kind of self dilusion is just a natural response. The whole political cult thing is a fucking joke, and it needs to be laughed it.

My point exactly.
The old "That will never happen" excuse needs to end.
Guns will never be unavailable in the US. The sooner we get used to that and stop trying to push our political agendas real progress can be made.

It appears that they are finally getting realistic about that and at least trying to do something logical. Finally.

So no, you're wrong. Guns will not be restricted enough to save any lives in the US. It will never happen. Holding out for that as democrats have been has just been killing more people. Every bit as much as the republicans.

I disagree on many levels. Sorry you can't figure that out but keep banging that drum and telling that lie.

The bipartisan bill is a start. Both sides got a few things they wanted. Though an actual raise in age for purchase of guns would have been better, an enhanced review process for buyers under 21 is a start. Background checks, a green light for red flag laws, and movement on consequences for straw purchases (though they should have just made that illegal...looks like it will just be a fine maybe).

The Republicans got what they wanted in securing schools better and better access to mental health (which the Dems want to).

This is all a start. It's progress that shows progress can be made. What this can't be is a one-off thing. This can't be an oh we did something and we are done. It needs to be a we did something and how can we improve on this? How can we make more progress because if this can be done, more can be done, even if it takes time. We have to keep pushing the envelope so that fewer and fewer incidents like what happened in Uvalde, occur again across our country. It's called progress for a reason, because it's a move forward, and we have to keep moving forward or we move backwards and we lose what little progress we have just made.

You're largely wrong on nearly all of those levels. As has been proven for decades...

Or we could just say "That will never happen" and stop there.
Change never happens in a blink of an eye. Takes time and rightfully so. One thing I have figured out over the years is "NEVER" is a very long time.

Which is a false narrative. You're arguing against a position that doesn't exist.

Here's hoping our political leaders can be more mature than that.

I'm still of the mind that in order to get the progress we are hoping for, it's going to have to happen at the state level. This is definitely a start though. Gotta keep it moving!

It's definitely progress, which is something we definitely need to see more of.

I'm curious about your ideas on state level changes though... How are you thinking they could be more effective?

Raising the age requirements for one. Red flag laws and just general laws and regulations on becoming a gun owner. It should be more difficult, not less.

Ultimately though, I'm not a state legislator, they are the ones that need to come up with these laws.

I see what you mean. I think it'll take many decades (like a century worth) to get the 30+ states who currently allow permitless open carry to make those changes on their own.

I would hope we could get incentive and social based improvements far quicker than that. At the very least, I think it would take a federal law backed by the supreme court to mandate those changes. That could come quicker if the supreme court were weaponized by democrats in the future the way it currently is for republicans.

This is hard for me to root for. I'd prefer if the supreme court were 100% apolitical.

I kind of feel most of this conversation has already happened and it's a good time to bow out. The same 6 or 7 posters are saying changes need to be made and the same single poster seems to want to continue to say those changes are not going to happen.

I guess we will see.

Well, we seem to be moving ahead with some of the things that "single poster" has suggested (there have actually been multiple posters, but the misrepresentation of the facts has become expected from some).

So... here's hoping we don't have to wait more decades to actually address the problem, rather than proposing politically charged (and thereby doomed) policies that rarely go anywhere, and even when they do, aren't successful enough to show a causal relationship to any changes.

Something had to happen before some gun supporters got voted out of office. We'll see if this is enough but I doubt it.

Agreed. The gun rights advocates were not going to budge. For a long time.

I also seriously doubt this will be enough to stop mass shootings. Nothing will stop people in the US from killing 3 or 4 people when they decide they want to.

I don't really even know the details, so it's tough to know if the policies will be instituted in a responsible manner or if it will just be a barrel for pork...
