Tech Frys electronics is toast

I knew that was going to happen. The Wilsonville store has been bare for over a year now.

Google the Fry's executive who took millions from the company and gambled it all away in Vegas. I think it happened in the early 2000s but it's a hell of a story.

When I lived in Wilsonville I went to Frye's to get a 75 cent adapter for a computer chord....got home and it was the wrong adapter...went back and had to stand in 3 lines, fill out two forms and talk to 3 people to get credit...for 75 cents after all that I never went back to that store....what a ridiculous experience...having just moved from Taiwan, in Taiwan they would have said....no problem...just give it to me and go get another one...

I remember I got a build ur own computer case. Shit started smoking when I put it together and I think they just restocked it

This was down here in LA.

Also weird they sold porn there

When the Wilsonville location opened as Incredible Universe, it was the single largest big-box retail electronics store in the US (if not the world - can’t remember).

What a shit show that made of local traffic in tiny Wilsonville.

I used to love that place until they stopped carrying anything useful. At all.

I miss radio shack and ENU as well .

Is there anything else in the Portland area that carries these types of electronics and pc parts etc?

Free Geek for used stuff.

This is like Pearl Harbor, the JFK assassination and 9/11 all wrapped up in one for all you nerds huh? Never heard of the place FAMS.

Like open but empty? I almost drove out there over the weekend because I needed a long cat6.

Yes, like weirdly bare. Just a few items. Like the back wall with different motherboards had 1, just one motherboard. The tvs were all cheap Chinese brands.

I asked someone and they said they were a consignment store now. Meaning they get stuff and don't have to pay for it until it sells. No major manufacturer would agree to those terms so the few items that were there were cheap knockoff imports.

I went there last spring for PPE because of an ad and even that was shitty in quality.

Here is their latest ad.

LOL no wonder they are going bankrupt, they are still printing ads for blank DVD's, wow!

Last time I went there, I was looking for a computer (sometime in the last 8 months). There was maybe 6 total employees there, and honestly I think there was maybe 2 customers.

They had 3 total computers. It was a baron wasteland.

Funny that someone mentioned blank DVD's, I had been picking those things up at second hand stores for dirt cheap. Not sure why I kept buying them, but I think I've bought about 500 of them for about 8 bucks total. Someday I might make use to them (I had initially planned on using them to store data/pictures/songs for longevity).

But then I found myself a 5TB portable HD, and so the DVDs sit.

My pops and I built our desktop back in the early 2000s for super cheap with all components we bought at Fry's. I remember driving to the Wilsonville store like a million times to get random stuff.

Good times.

After nearly 36 years in business as the one-stop-shop and online resource for high-tech professionals across nine states and 31 stores, Fry’s Electronics, Inc. (“Fry’s” or “Company”), has made the difficult decision to shut down its operations and close its business permanently as a result of changes in the retail industry and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Company will implement the shut down through an orderly wind down process that it believes will be in the best interests of the Company, its creditors, and other stakeholders.

The Company ceased regular operations and began the wind-down process on February 24, 2021. It is hoped that undertaking the wind-down through this orderly process will reduce costs, avoid additional liabilities, minimize the impact on our customers, vendors, landlords and associates, and maximize the value of the Company’s assets for its creditors and other stakeholders.

The Company is in the process of reaching out to its customers with repairs and consignment vendors to help them understand what this will mean for them and the proposed next steps.

If you have questions, please contact us using the following email addresses:

For customers who have equipment currently being repaired, please email customerservice@frys.com, to arrange for return of your equipment.

For customers with items needing repair under a Performance Service Contract, please call (800) 811-1745.

For consignment vendors needing to pick up their consignment inventory at Fry’s locations, please email omnichannel@frys.com.

Please understand if we are a bit slow to respond given the large volume of questions. The Company appreciates your patience and support through this process.

Sincerely,

Fry’s Electronics

Traffic is already fucked there during rush hour. I couldn't imagine what it would be like if a stadium was there.

Whatever it ends up being, Wilsonville requires that for car dealers, the cars be either kept indoors or behind walls/fences so they are kept out of sight from the general public. I suspect that property probably wouldn’t work for that, but you never know. The last thing Wilsonville needs is another car dealership......
