http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jul/22/henry-louis-gates-arrested-at-home

It was early afternoon when Gates, 58, reached his house by taxi. The front door was stuck, so he entered through the back door, disabled the alarm and then again tried to push open the front door with the help of the north African taxi driver.

A white woman walking by saw a black man trying to force the door, called 911, and hapless Sgt James Crowley arrived.

He asked Gates to step outside as he was investigating a report of a break-in. "Why, because I'm a black man in America?" Gates asked, according to Crowley's police report, refusing to leave his front room.

Asked to prove it was his own home, Gates showed his Harvard ID and local driving licence. In return, Gates asked Crowley for his name and badge number. "This guy had this whole narrative in his head: black guy breaking and entering," Gates told the Washington Post.

In his report, Crowley said Gates accused him of being a racist and told him he had no idea who he was messing with. The officer wrote that when asked Gates to step outside again, he responded: "I'll speak with your mama outside."

"I was quite surprised and confused with the behaviour he exhibited toward me," the sergeant said. Crowley called more officers from Cambridge and from Harvard's own police, and Gates was arrested.

Last night Gates said he was "appalled that any American could be treated as capriciously by an individual police officer. He should look into his soul and he should apologise to me. If so, I will be prepared to forgive him."

Facing a barrage of criticism, the force last night dropped all charges, adding the "regrettable and unfortunate" incident should not be seen as demeaning the character and reputation of Gates nor the character of the police.

News that arguably the most respected scholar of African-American history had been subjected to the very treatment that he has chronicled over many years yesterday spread through the media, prompting accusations of blatant racial profiling.

Gates told the Washington Post: "There are one million black men in jail in this country and last Thursday I was one of them. This is outrageous and this is how poor black men across the country are treated every day in the criminal justice system. It's one thing to write about it, but altogether another to experience it."

Possible racist women:
A white woman walking by saw a black man trying to force the door, called 911,...

A cop following normal procedure:
...and hapless Sgt James Crowley arrived. He asked Gates to step outside as he was investigating a report of a break-in.

A smartass who was asking to be thrown in jail with his remarks...

Racial profiling exisits, but it doesnt seem like that cop was doing that, just possibly the lady who reported it

This isn't a race problem. The cop would have thrown a white man in jail for "breaking into his own home". Cops aren't held accountable for anything they do.

A smartass who was asking to be thrown in jail with his remarks...

ill tell u what- i consider myself mild mannered but if a cop was insinuating i was breaking into my own home even after i presented my drivers license (as gates did)- i would have made it my prerogative to humiliate the cop. it doest matter how i speak to a cop, he's a public servant whose responsibilities are limited to enforcing the law, not arbitrary interpretations of it

We have no idea which happened first. The man insulting the cop or him showing the ID

we know the police dept dropped all charges and apologized publicly which deviates strongly from typical police dept practice of vigorously defending their personnel in spite of their overt bigotry.

Yeah...im sure his name and publicity had nothing to do with that

Exactly. If this was just the average schmoe, a man would have been wrongfully charged with some bullshit like disorderly contact.

This guy being who he was caused the police department to do the right thing, which they wouldn't have done if it was just some average guy.

I think anyone whose dealt with police officers and the court system know that it's so corrupt, and that the police officers can do pretty much no wrong.

actually...i meant the exact opposite

sounds like HE was the one already profiling the cop. HE was the one talking shit

To be fair, that's lifted from the police report. And cops frequently cover their own ass in the report. It's happened to people I know a bunch of times.

Either way, one of these sides is full of B.S. We either have a racist police department covering their own ass or an Al Sharpton clone. The woman who called is definitely a racist bitch though.

u dont get it- whether he's a harvard professor or homeless black man, it still makes the actions of the police officers outrageous. and if u follow the news u would know that celebrities are often prosecuted more harshly just to make a point

No, you dont get it. Not every cop who talks to a black man about a possible crime is a racist...you and Chutney are taking the cynical side and the less probable side.

The majority of cops are racist and bullshit on their police reports right? Sorry if I dont buy that.

"We've seen this before.... broke in and hung up pictures of his family... sprinkle some crack on him and let's get outta here."

What I don't understand is how they couldn't just easily verify that the guy was the owner with his id in his wallet. I mean god the driver's license would have the address right there.

Cops have their power trips, it should have been easy enough to find out he wasn't breaking in.

lmao! What is that from South Park?

a cop with reasonable suspicion can question a suspect but to insinuate a crime occurred in spite of the overwhelming evidence (i.e. drivers license, the pictures on the wall) is just bigoted and an arbitrary use of his powers as a public servant. i never said all cops were bigots, just some of them and they need to be weeded out or else the police officers encounter a legitimacy problem which is a lot bigger than the arrest of professor gates.

Dude, your just making stuff up now. Did it say the cop didnt believe him when he provided ID? No.

All of the problems the owner of the house had was cause he kept insulting the cop anyway he could

im not fabricating the facts, they are the facts and hold up well independently. maybe u dont understand the duties of the police officer- they are public servants just like garbage men who derive their powers from the state and earn their money from the public purse; there in the protection business. when professor gates demonstrated he was the owner- the officer should have resumed his duties as a servant of the state and go on to his next call instead of calling more officers to subdue and arrest a 58 year old man. i will never venerate a public servant nor should anyone else.

you do realize that the guy could have been talking shit to the cop even before he showed his ID...even afterwards too. So he is allowed to just verbally assault a police officer with no repercussions? Hell no.

If he was talking shit then he got exactly what he deserved, to be arrested but let go without charges

Ha, this has been a pretty big deal around here. From everything I've heard, I think Gates overreacted. He immediately got upset at the officer, who was just doing his job. Gates even admitted on his website that the hairs on the back of his neck stood up when the officer first approached and asked him to step off the porch. That's a little ridiculous. It definitely seems like Gates is the type of guy that's out to prove some sort of point, now making all types of demands to the police department and making plans to capitalize on the incident. Ironic that all the cop was trying to do was protect the guy's property.

So let me get this straight, guy was breaking into his house... Lady called the cops becouse someone was breaking into a house... Why is she a racist?

blaming the victim? as ive previously stated- im as mild mannered as they come but if a cop was accosting me- u better believe i would react as defensively as professor gates did. the officer wasnt protecting gates property, he was acting on a bigoted stereotype that african americans couldnt reside in a wealthy neighbourhood. fyi- police depts are as obdurate as they come when it comes to defending their personnel- the dropping of the charges and their public apology is an admission of the officer's misconduct.

you cant really, I guess you could argue that she was profiling but that really hard to do since she DID SEE two men trying to bust the back door open...we'll never know if she would have reported it if the two men were white

this is a fucking joke...

then you should be put in handcuffs too, maybe you will learn your lesson

he was acting on a bigoted stereotype that african americans couldnt reside in a wealthy neighbourhood.

making stuff up again I see? Or were you a fly on the wall?

Maybe its YOU using the stereotype that cops are racist as a whole...ever think about that Einstein?

So you think people can put cops under citizen's arrest when cops begin verbally assaulting them, like they often do?

So you think people can put cops under citizen's arrest when cops begin verbally assaulting them, like they often do?

cops often verbally assault people
cops are racist
cops are guilty of racial profiling

any other generic stereotypes you wanna give cops mr know it all 19 year old?

Yeah man! Fuck cops! Fight the power man!

because its a bullshit question...you treat cops with respect then 99.9% of them will treat you with respect...its not rocket science
