This is do or die for the McCain campaign. This isn't a matter of the bar being so low that Palin has to just cross that to be a winner. She needs to come in here and hit a grandslam. If she has stupid answers like during the Couric interview, she will be done as a national politician, and will sink the McCain campaign.
If Palin flops tonight, Indiana, Missouri, and North Carolina will probably move into the Obama category. The question will be if other close states like West Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi, North Dakota, and Texas follow suit. (yeah, some of these states are within 10 points now, when they were huge McCain leads not too long ago).
Make no buts about it, if Palin does poorly, this is the end of the road for the McCain campaign. It'll just be a matter of determining how much of a blow out it will be for Obama.
