If you haven't yet, go do it today. I took care of the kids, but never got around to it myself. Now my throat feels like I swallowed hot gravel. Wife and I have been half comatose for the past three days. This crap is no fun.

Meanwhile the boys are happy as can be (and winning more battles of wills than we like, but neither of us have the energy to fight them off).

hell no...they are gonna find out some super adverse long term reaction about the vaccine in 5 years....a medicine passed thru in a few months, a year tops.....hell no

I'll just deal with the flu for a week if i am so unlucky

Do you even know what a vaccine is or how they work? Polio is now making a come back because of naive thinking like this.

You do know each year there is a new flu vaccine, right? They can't do massive long term testing on each year's flu vaccine...

I don't get Flu Shots, dont think they are worth it.... I haven't got sick in years. Not that I care, but did you guys read about some people that had some crazy adverse reactions to the vaccine? Crazy shit.

BTW, comparing Polio and Swine Flu in regards to must-get vaccinations is apples and oranges....big time.

I didn't compare them. Let me clear up my original post, misinformation over vaccines in general is causing an unnecessary fear that is resulting in some people avoiding getting vaccinated for anything. I used the increase in Polio as an example.

ive never had a flu shot...not gonna start now

and this vaccine I would think is vastly different then the "normal" flu shot the come up with...hence why there was hysteria over the vaccine...that and a shitload had to be made

I need to get more informed on these kind of shots, because I feel the way Darizzle does. Don't get flu shots and have heard stories of adverse reactions.

I also know mothers who are concerned with all the vaccines doctors give babies and some are convinced it increases the risk of autism.

Again I admit not knowing much about vaccines . . . but I have heard enough stories from people I find credible to have teh same mentality as Darizzle (we are talking vaccines not favorite basketball teams)

I've never gotten a flu shot. I get the sniffles maybe twice a year, at most.

I was in Morocco this summer and I think I got Swine Flu. I can't be sure, but it sure seemed like it.

flu shots seem to help me. I get sick once a year usually, but if I get a flu shot, I either don't or its less severe. No flu shot this year = I was sick for like a month.

I didn't get the flu shot OR the H1N1 shot.

It's not a particularly lethal virus, based on what I've read. If I get sick, I get sick. My body is (relatively) young and strong and I'll take care of myself if I get ill.

I had a docter friend tell me to never get a flu shot. Never have, never will.

Flu shots are way different than MMR and other vaccines. Flu shots, are pointless IMO. Serious vaccines are just that, serious! Autism increased numbers might be manmade but they are not likely to be from the vaccine. People also clump aspergers in with autism, and many other "my kid is just awkward" things. They just want someone else to blame for their problems.

Vaccines do not increase the risk of autism. No proper studies have shown a correlation. Jenny McCarthy is a raving retard.

Except that you may spread that same flu to somebody else who isn't as young and strong. Vaccines are far more effective if a population builds a critical mass of vaccinated people.

Even if you don't care if you get sick, consider that you may inadvertently infect a newborn nephew or great grandma during your own infection.

The wife, the boy and I all got the flu shot and the H1N1. As Mook said, it's not so much about you getting sick but not spreading it to people who are less able to fight the illness.

That being said, when you have kids, you get sick all the freaking time. Those li'l bastards are like walking petri dishes.

When they were giving out free H1N1 shots/vaccines on campus, I asked my mom about it since she works in a low income clinic that sees a lot of shit. Her response was not to get one since they were rushed into getting one out there, so there was very little time to actually test the vaccine. Certain vaccines are fine, but if there ever was going to be a problem, new ones like H1N1, that were barely tested are the ones that will have issues. Swine flu won't kill you unless you are a complete moron, and let it dehydrate you to death, or just ancient dust old.

I don't get flu shots but I don't buy into the hysteria about vaccines, either. I don't get the shots because, like Ed O, I figger I'm tough enough to take it, and what doesn't kill me makes me stronger. On the other hand, the swine flu really wasn't much fun, and I'm not sure how many more years I have before I'm no longer tough enough to take it.

And I'm single, so when I'm sick I'm not infecting others. Other than the rats that come to chew my corpse when it turns out I'm not as tough as I thought.

Or your cat. Cats have been known to munch on dead owners.

Or your cat. Cats have been known to munch on dead owners.

That gives me the opportunity to quote one of my favorite songs...

Marie Provost did not look her best
The day the cops busted into her lonely nest
in the cheap hotel up on Hollywood west
July 29

She'd been lying there for two or three weeks
The neighbors said they never heard a squeak
While hungry eyes that could not speak
said even little doggies have got to eat

chorus:
She was a winner
that became the doggie's dinner
She never meant that much to me
Whoa oh poor Marie

Marie Provost was a movie queen
mysterious angel of the silent screen
And run like the wind the nation's young men steamed
When Marie crossed the silent screen

Whoa she came out west from New York
but when the talkies came Marie just couldn't cope
The public said Marie take a walk
All the way back to New York

-repeat chorus-

Those quaalude bombs didn't help her sleep
As her nights grew long and her days grew bleak
It's all downhill once you've passed your peak
Marie got ready for that last big sleep

The cops came in and they looked around
Throwin' up everywhere over what they found
The handiwork of Marie's little dachshund
That hungry little dachshund

Researcher Who Sparked the Vaccine/Autism Scare "Acted Unethically"
Posted on January 28, 2010, 7:34PM | Ronald Bailey

As I reported a while back, in the past few years the percentage of American children who receive childhood vaccinations has been dropping, and educated, well-off parents are leading the retreat. What has spooked them? Parents fear that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine may trigger autism, a neurological disorder that typically appears before a child reaches the age of three.

The MMR/autism hypothesis took off in 1998 with the publication of a study of 12 autistic children by Canadian gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield. Wakefield’s study found traces of the measles virus in the guts of children he tested. He concluded that the virus derived from the MMR vaccination, and suggested that it caused inflammation possibly related to the children’s neuropsychiatric dysfunction .

Since then study after study has debunked Wakefield's research. The Bad Astronomy blog over at Discover magazine reports:

...the UK’s General Medical Council has found that Andrew Wakefield — the founder of the modern antivaccination movement — acted "dishonestly and irresponsibly" when doing the research that led him to conclude that vaccinations were linked with autism. This is being reported everywhere, including the BBC, Sky News, the Yorkshire Evening Post, and more.

The GMC (the independent body of medical regulators in the UK, rather like the AMA in the US) didn’t investigate whether his claims were correct or not — and let’s be very clear, his claims have been shown beyond any doubt to be totally wrong — only whether he acted ethically in his research. What they found is that his research (involving spinal taps of children) was against the children’s clinical interest, that Wakefield was unqualified to perform the test, and that he had no ethical approval to do them.

Wow. Again, let’s be clear: that’s a whole lot of ethical damnation from the UK’s leading medical board.

Not to pile on here, but I was rather surprised that they didn’t mention the claims — supported by a lot of evidence — that on top of all that unethical behavior, he may have faked his results, too. There’s also no mention of his grave conflict of interest– at the time he published his paper slamming vaccines and which started the antivax craze, he was developing an alternative to vaccinations, so he had a very large monetary incentive to make the public distrust vaccines.

Hurray! Let's hope this ruling gets as wide a distribution as possible so that more children will receive vaccinations. Still no word on what sanctions Wakefield might suffer.

Kudos to Steve Skutnik.

Military requires you to get both. I've done so.

My wife's pregnant. She got both, too.

My niece was infected with whooping cough for a 2-month hospital stay b/c she wasn't old enough to get her shots (she was 3 months, iirc) and some idiot homeschool mom who believed the "autism" bullcrap didn't want her kids to have shots. Not one of those "Whacky Christian Prayer Warriors", but a mom who believed the New Wives' Tale about this garbage.

We took a happy medium approach to vaccinating our boy. We simply broke up the amount of vaccines our child received at once. Instead of getting six shots at once, we'd give him two every two to three weeks. Our boy still was vaccinated, but his body wasn't overwhelmed. They give them all at once to make life easier for the parent. We don't mind taking a few more trips every year to the pediatrician.

Not a bad idea. My older boy is terrified of shots, though. I think overall he's better off just going through the trauma once.

My son is only 19 mos old, so it's a lot easier. However, he's starting to gain long-term memory so when we take him to the pediatrician you can tell he gets a little stressed.
