Glen Webster/Martell Rice

When we drafted Martell, he was compared to Glen Rice -- one of the most underrated players in NBA history (in my opinion), one of the greatest shooters of all time, and one of the best athletes in NBA history.

Glen Rice attended all 4 years of college. Martell attended none. So in his rookie season, Rice was 22 years old. Unfortunately, Martell only played a handful of minutes in his 22nd year, but averages of his 21st and 23rd years (this year and 07-08) have Martell at almost 11 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1/2 a steal and 1/2 a block per game (all of which I think will continue to rise throughout this year), and only 1 turnover on around 41% shooting and about 38% from behind the arc in 28 1/2 minutes per game.

By comparison, Rice put up 13.6 pts, 4.6 rebs, 1.8 assists, .9 steals, and 1.5 turnovers in 30 minutes shooting 44% and only 24.6% from behind the arc.

In Rice's 2nd year in the league -- comparable to this year in Tell's career, Rice posted 17.4 pts, 4.9 rebs, 2.5 assists, 1.3 steals, and a little over 2 turnovers in 34.4 minutes as a main player for Miami.

Martell seems able to match this production as a role player for this team. If Tell continues to develop his game he could turn into a Glen Rice-esque stud next to Broy, LA, and Oden.

I think Martell is progressing nicely! As my favorite player, I'm happy to see it and hope he keeps working and playing hard!

Glen Rice had his yearly PERs go 11.3, 14.1, and then 17.5 in his first three years in the league. Martell is at the same age now as Glen was in his 2nd year and is at 13.1 PER and 11.6 for his career. We'll see where he ends up this season, but he's trailing in this comparison right now and next year he'll have to make a big jump if it's to hold water.

That would be great but I'm not holding my breath.

Rice was a damn good player, but he wasn't as athletic as Martell. Martell is no where near the over all offensive player Rice was in his prime.

Maybe Dan Majerle is a better choice. Super athletic 3 point threat who played good to excellent defense.

Sounds like the player Martell is trying to become. I would take a Majerle on this team in a heart beat.

Dale Ellis with D? I would take that all day long. Webster has a ways to go before he's at Ellis's level on offense, though. Martel is already better than Dale on D.

Martel die spot up much like Ellis, and shoots the three pointer at about the same clip as Ellis did the year before Whitsitt brought him to Seattle (for Al Wood). Once in Seattle Ellis became perhaps the best 3 point specialist ever.

I'd love to see Martel become an Ellis clone.

I nicely (I even said Please) asked the OP not to call Martell, "Tell". He refused and told me to deal with it. I dealt with it in the manner of my choosing by putting him on ignore. Last I checked, I still had that right. As far as I'm concerned the issue was resolved at that point. He can call Martell "Tell" and I can ignore him. End of story.
