Honestly, I'm not sure Billups' future should carry a lot of weight when picking the new GM.

It shouldn't, but it's just a sign of a dysfunctional organization when they empower the GM to find a coach, give that coach a 5 year contract, and then fire the GM not even half a year into the next season.

Just gives the feeling no one knows what the hell is going on.

Plus they have to deal with Russell & Pete, or blow it up too.

Scott Perry played for the Ducks in the 80’s and was a Joe Dumars protege while Billups was there so there could be some familiarity.

I think Brent Barry would be good. But, Barry’s are usually dicks too

Perry is tight with Billups, dunno how much that will impact the search but I think it’s important they find someone that supports and can work with Billups. I don’t want another Olshey/Stotts situation where it’s pretty much two dudes doing their own thing with minimal collaboration.

He drafted Mario Hezonga!
Didnt do anything in Sac the 3 months he was there.

He wasn’t even in charge of Orlando, may as well give him credit for drafting KD and winning a ring with Detroit then.

He made it plain he was unhappy to be here, wanted more minutes, wanted to be used differently, etc...the usual litany.

He was a pretty solid player who spent his career on completely scrubby teams and got traded to a rebuilding Blazers team

Fair enough, but even if you think his reasons for not wanting to be here were valid, it still remains that he didn't want to be a Blazer.

He was incredibly happy to be here when he was traded here. Walked in to the first practice and yelled and clapped his hands... He was excited to be going to a winning team.

You're right, in haste I garbled the message. He wanted more minutes at PF. He didn't like spending time on the floor with Zach Randolph.
And who did at that point, the dude wouldn't play defense and if the ball touched his hands on offense no one was getting it again during that possession. What Zbo turned himself into by the time he was with the Grizz was really impressive. It takes a lot to completely change your mindset around something that you've been the best at your whole life.

FINALLY...Neil "It's not the roster" is gone and his valet may be getting him out of town as we speak. Joe Cronin has been named the interim GM for the time being. The last time we had an interim, Chad Buchanon turned Gerald Wallace into Damian Lillard.

Names that have come up already:

Marc Eversley (Chicago Bulls): https://www.bleachernation.com/bull...eration-for-blazers-top-front-office-vacancy/

Scotty Perry (New York Knicks): https://www.basketball-reference.com/executives/perrysc99x.html

Brent Barry (San Antonio Spurs): https://www.nba.com/spurs/brent-barry

Tayshaun Prince (Memphis Grizzlies): https://www.nba.com/news/memphis-grizzlies-tayshaun-prince-official-release

Joe Cronin (Interim GM, Blazers) https://www.blazersedge.com/2014/7/...te-joe-cronin-to-director-of-player-personnel

There are other names likely to surface as well. Do you have a preference.....and why?

Prince. Im super intrigued about one of the nbas best defensive teams having their two best defensive smalls team up as coach and gm.
You know they will be on the same page for what they believe it takes to win and gather a group of players that better fits their vision.

It sounds like Prince is considered a long shot if considered at all.

Eversley (from Nike), seems to be the early leader in the clubhouse, He has a great connection with players around the league and is very tight with DeRozen who is one of Dame's best friends. He is well thought of and people in Chicago don't like the idea that he could go.

He is currently in the #2 position for the Bulls (behind Arturo), so this would be a step up for him if he were GM and Pres of Basketball Ops. https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/spo...-be-considered-for-blazers-lead-exec/2699657/

What do you think of a prince/billups pairing if it did happen though?

I believe Prince has taken himself out of consideration....read that somewhere last night.

Abdur-Rahim is a very bright guy. Interesting consideration.
I have nothing to go on but SAR's career as a Blazers executive fucking better be better than his career as a Blazers player.

In general, I'm not sure about hiring ex-players. Jerry West: great! But even smart guys like Steve Kerr were shitty GMs. Let the rest of the population, the wanna-be players, have a shot!

(I will exempt Shane Battier from this, for very good reasons that I'm not going to share.)

James Jones has been a far better GM than he was Blazers player. I see no parallels and don’t understand how the two different positions equate

Sean Marks was a complete scrub, seems like a good GM. Dumars was a good player and good GM

The type that seem to succeed (West aside) are the non-stars. Guys who do all the little things. James Jones was far better for the Blazers than SAR - if you look beyond scoring to impact on winning. Jones was a +/- king. This is why I want to see what Battier can do.

(Dumars was good in a very limited window. His assembly of the Sheed Pistons was great, but a lot of his moves before and since (and even during - drafting Darko, for example, one of the all-time terrible picks given the context) make one wonder if that was more luck than judgment.)
