I just feel like so much of these discussions is basically a bunch of old guys sitting around complaining that they don't write music like they used to.

Shit, I know I dont!!! Ive never written better than when I was 20-22 and high on shrooms all the time.

Comparing two NBA males isn't the same as comparing an NBA male to a WNBA female. If you can't see that then I can't help you.

The league isn't static. Would Wilt score 100 PPG in a season today?

I don't think so, but maybe 40. The league WAY back when was mostly short players. A guy with Wilt's size and strength was able to get his shot off without much of a challenge.

He was so strong, he'd still be one of the strongest players today. Those things don't change.

Was the Greyhound, Walter Davis, a star?
I think Denny has kicked my ass on this and i've gone full circle in agreement with him. Thinking about hings man Greyhound was barely an allstar back then and averaged over 20ppg for how many years in a row. I don't know his other stats, but i'm thinking in today's game he would have been a perennial all star, but I think he sniffed one backup spot in his career?

So you think the difference between the league back then and right now is the same as the difference between the league now and the WNBA?

Wilt wouldn't get 30. Big men are way more athletic now. He wouldnt be able to out jump and just shoot over anyone.

He was a brilliant basketball player. Not only was he a star, he played stellar defense and scored over 50% from the hardest spot on the floor to hit high % (outside the lane, mid range, two point shot). His teammate Paul Westphal was no slouch, either.

Did you know that if the ABA didn't exist, Dr. J was drafted by the Bucks and would have joined Kareem and Oscar Robertson on the same team?

David Thompson went to NC State. He blocked shots by Bill Walton twice, and Keith (Jamal) Wilkes as the Wolfpack miraculously beat the UCLA bruins. UCLA was unbeaten for 7 straight seasons thanks to Kareem and then Walton. He was drafted by the Hawks and would have teamed with Sweet Lou Hudson, John Drew, and Truck Robinson to make a formidable team.

He and George Gervin finished .1 (or less) PPG apart for the scoring title one year. Check out Gervin's career. They say he was Pippen without the great defense.

Have a look at Bob McAoo (No D, McAdoo). He was a bench player for the showtime Lakers. That's how good they were. McAoo was money from 3pt range at 6'11".

Or Randy Smith. Or Phil Smith. Or Rick Barry. Or Adrian Dantley. Or Norm Nixon (compare him to Rajon Rondo? LOL). Or Bernard King. Or Kareem. Or Walton.

All those players played in 1978-77 together. I didn't even name most of the stars, just the obvious ones. Like Dr. J. is missing from the list, Moses Malone, etc.

There just aren't contemporary players that compare when you consider the Smiths and Nixon were probably in the top 100 players of the time (but not top 50).

But he would have had the benefit of modern coaching, weight training, and practice against today's players. LOL

So he didn't have the benefit of weight training back then? He wouldn't have benefited from today's coaching either. Todays coaches know how to develop shot blockers and shooters, not low post players. He wouldn't never developed a jumper and his low post game would be worse.

You mean the coaches who wouldn't let him have the ball half as many times as he did?

Was that all supposed to be green font? If so I think you might be arguing for today's players...

If coaching helps today's players, it would make him an even better player than he was.

He'd get all the shots he could handle. No coach is fool enough to go away from arguably the G.O.A.T. and easy baskets.

LOL! You're really stretching! You mean back in the day when defenders could bump and hand-check? Yeah, it's SO MUCH harder to play against a defender that isn't allowed to touch you. Also, stars dominate - period. They don't allow low-level bench players (who they rarely play against) hold them in check.

Just give up. There isn't an argument to be made that today's top talent is equal to the top talent of past decades. Give. It. Up.
Your last paragraph is one of the dumbest things I've ever read..... Seriously... Holy shit...

No. Just there were few easy nights for players at any position.

More like the top 10 player were better than today's, and the 100th best player is probably as good as #50 today.
Great scientific analysis. This made me think of some other ignorant shit.

Anyone wanna argue about how they don't make cars like they used to anymore? Cmon, convince me that your favorite car is better than mine!

Gentlemen, this is perhaps an entertaining pastime of discussing matters that can absolutely never be proven, but this seems really pointless. There is no convincing one side or the other with evidence since there is no way to validate the "evidence".

It seems, to me, that we would all be better served by playing more basketball and talking about it less.

See you all on the courts! :deadhorse::smiley-bonk:

Play more basketball? Don't know if I can

But this whole site can be pointless when it comes to production oriented people. Further more, how do you not know that some of us are handicapped, elderly, etc and cant play anymore, so all we CAN do is bicker at each other and fruitlessly try to change peoples opinions?

I mean isn't the point of an opinion is to discuss and try to move that opinion because it ISN'T a fact? Whats the point in discussing facts. you cant provide an opinion on it to change ones mind because its a fact. So we discuss each others opinions. Sorry you wasted your time.

They certainly do not make cars like they used to anymore. If it is better or not is up to you to decide.

As an infrequent racer (I used to do a lot more of it in the past) - I believe that weight is the enemy. Today's cars by and large are heavy in the name of safety, luxury and people not caring - so in general, there are very few modern cars I am really excited about. Add electronic steering and the loss of tactile feedback - and frankly, today's cars are fantastic transportation pods, but not as fun, in general, as older cars.

They don't look cool, either.

I agree with a few exceptions. The new Charger kicks ass.
So does the New mustang of like 3 years ago I think?

Other than that, all these prius and civics and stuff are all just toys. Conveyor belt turnout toys.

Agree on both counts. Mustangs have never been better. The new Chargers and Challengers and Camaros capture that old feeling pretty well.

Back in the day you could (and people did) turn just about anything into a muscle car. There were so many awesome cars in my high school: GTOs, Roadrunners, Chargers, Challengers, Chevelles, Camaros, even Dusters and Darts and Novas were built. Everyone used to cruise the gut and hang out (and race a little). It was fun.

My first car was a ford Fairmont. Baby blue. But somehow I muscled that shit out to where my friends wanted rides all the time. lol.

I was stuck tricking out my little Datsun 510. LOL

I had a buddy who was a mechanical genius. He won the national Plymouth Trouble Shooting contest in college (if you know what that is). When he got done rebuilding his Dodge Coronet (basically a challenger/charger), he took me out for a ride. Started from a slow roll and punched it; at 110 MPH in third gear, he hit fourth and broke the rear tires loose. Yikes.

510s were/are fantastic cars. I did not care much for the suspension setting from the factory - but with very little work you can make them into very nice road or rally racers that are a lot of fun to drive. Almost bought one around 82nd st. in Portland that had the full Africa Rally suspension on it. Was great to drive - but too much rust for me to take it on.

I also had a little yellow Opel. Im sorry. But I tried. and it died...

Independent rear suspension made it great on a short course with a slalom or rally cam. Used to see a lot of them going around PIR with other smallish sedans.
