Good chance team uses TPE?

usually teams let them expire but I think we’re in an opportunistic situation. We have the largest TPE in the league and in a time when everyone is looking to dump salary, we have a chance to add an impact player for nothing other than a financial commitment. So as long as Allen is ok with it, we should take advantage.

Are any of these players better than the free agents we could potentially sign?

The Vonleh TPE also opens up the opportunity to get creative and maybe offer up a pick and salary relief in return for a recent draft pick that a team might be open to move. Maybe even Fultz with the Crabbe TPE

When thinking about the TPE, you have to ask yourself if XXXX player is worth paying 3x their current salary.... because that is roughly what it will cost the Blazers to have them.

Except for extreme cases, the answer will be no.

There's a 99.999% chance that the TPE will not be used & will just expire. To think otherwise will just set yourself up for disappointment

If we’re going to be a tax team, we may as well have a squad worthy of the bill. Do any of those guys move the needle enough? I think a couple of them do.

Well there are ways around that with 2 for 1 trades or trading someone under contract for a non-guaranteed guy at the draft. If we kept our pick and let Layman walk we'd still have two roster spots right? That means we could use two of the three options (either TPE or tax-MLE). The smaller TPE we could wait until the deadline to use. By then maybe we'd off a contract for an expiring we could just waive.

I know this is weird to make moves with future trades in mind but whoever is brought in using the TPEs or the tax-MLE should hopefully have value for trades at the deadline too.

If they could get Hezonja for the tax-MLE I think it would be a decent move. It's just hard to gauge the market right now. Glenn Robinson III might be a cheap flier too depending on jow he plays the rest of the year when he comes back from injury.

If we were able to do something like that with the tax-MLE and draft a wing then I'd love to use the bigger TPE to take on a bad contract for a future pick. That would give us more trade ammo too.

Let's see. You have Lee using the TPE.

Assuming we resign our FA for the following amounts:
Napier $5M
Baldwin $2M
Hezonja $6M (tax MLE)
Draft Pick $2M
Nurk $16M
Davis $8M

You've added $39M in FA signings, plus Lee's contact adds an additional $12M

Add that to the $112M Portland currently has, and you'd be at $163M in salaries (which is significantly higher than any team has ever been).

Assuming the tax begins at $125M, Portland would have a tax bill approaching $70M!!!

The team you just proposed would cost well over $200M per year (or double what the salary cap is).

Give it up. IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! The TPE will not be used this summer.

Not allowed to sign anyone with the TPE.

It stands for TRADED Player Exception.
Since you can only get a TPE through a trade, you can only use a TPE to aquire a player through trade (or you can pick them up off waivers).

Technically the TPE could be used for free agents as a sign and trade option. However, at the conclusion of the trade the Blazers would have to be under the tax apron which is extremely unlikely this summer.
