What didn't you like about it? Its uses are limited now, but once HBO, Hulu etc update their apps (both, plus a handful more have confirmed they are working on it), then it'll have all the functionality of ATV at a fraction of the cost. If you have a bunch of iTunes movies, then I could see sticking with the ATV. For people stuck with ATV (or those who love it), hopefully this forces Apple to open up a real app store for it. That would be huge for Apple.

took a while to connect. my bro said it was having problems connecting on my cousin's TV in vegas as well...it did eventually.

If it can't screen mirror or stream media from my phone which I guess they disabled?, its relatively useless for my purposes.

the thing is google half-asses a lot of their product launches, so I expect it to fail eventually.

Oh. I haven't had any lag issues connecting, but that would be frustrating. I think the update that broke that functionality of 1 specific app is overblown. The fact that they actually released an SDK to developers (as opposed to Apple) is encouraging. If its 6 months down the road and nothing is still available, then I'll be annoyed. My guess is that they'll push to get the big apps people want (Hulu +, HBOgo and hopefully Amazon Prime) updated before the Christmas shopping season.

I'll be honest, an app store for the Apple TV would be a shitshow of horrible apps and exactly what they don't want. What they are doing now (basically a private developer relationship and a fairly speedy update cycle for adding "channels", while strengthening the mirroring tech for iDevices to utilize with the ATV to cover everything else) is probably the best for "most consumers".

Still haven't gotten mine and I ordered on July 26th. The last delivery estimate I got was October 17, 2013 - October 30, 2013.

Wow, that's a bummer. I ordered mine direct from Google on 8/3 and I received it this past Monday.

Well, Apple would still have final say on what goes to the app store. Plus, it'd be just like the app store for people's iPhones. Bad apps would get bad ratings and no one would buy/install them. You'd still have 15-20 that dominate, but it would give options to the users. It does seem like they are getting more channels added recently, so maybe this will be less of an issue in the future.

One rumor I heard the other day is that Google/Youtube met with the NFL and the topic at hand was Sunday Ticket. If Google (or Apple if they are trying), gets that deal, that'll be huge for potential cord cutters.

Nice try Mr. Chop! I've been streaming the fuck out of content on my AppleTV since you started this thread! Another "AppleKiller" product goes by the wayside.

Sent from HCPs Baller-Ass iPhone 5...FAMS!

So of course this happens. I bought the Chromecast yesterday from Best Buy after porkchopexpress said that they were shipping the same day AND still giving you the Netflix deal.

I wanted to wait until it actually shipped before canceling my Amazon order. Best Buy sent me an email this morning that it shipped. 5 minutes before that Amazon says it is shipping early!

It was ok though, I was still able to cancel Amazon in time (barely) so even though Best Buy cost me a whole 2.10 more I stayed with them since they sent me the code for free Netflix.

All in all it worked out fine. Should get it by Tuesday.

Given Apple's app approval process now, I wouldn't want them to open up the marketplace. Ratings and rankings gaming is so common that I can't even imagine the kind of shitty apps that would be offered, approved, and downloaded, then used to blame Apple on a mediocre solution to the living room problem. Fuck that. Keep that shit closed tighter than the iDevice app store, and give real content providers total preferential treatment.

We'd have more AAA games on the iOS platform now if they'd just done that to begin with with the iDevice app store.

Hulu + just updated their app to add casting capability. This is the first app to get this since the launch, so hopefully this means more apps are going to start getting this functionality.

I'm curious... did you work for Apple in the past?

It's interesting to see the defending of the closed-source model.

Can I use the app without having hulu+ ?

I have never worked for Apple. I'm just giving my opinion based on my experience as a shopper in the (way more open than it seems) iOS marketplace.

I think the app is Hulu+ only. I'm not sure though. It's free, so you could always download and see what happens.

Does it only send apps or can you broadcast your computer screen? I want to know if I can watch a streaming event via Chromecast.

You can stream anything that is in a Chrome browser (only works on the desktop version of chrome, not iOS/Android). It doesn't work as seamlessly as the apps with the ability built in (it's officially beta). But, if you're streaming ESPN3 or something like that in Chrome, you just need to have the extension installed and then hit the "cast" button. I use it almost every day (I work at home and don't have cable, so I stream ESPN3 from time to time) and its pretty good. I've lost the connection a few times, but it hasn't been too bad. It's way better than hooking my laptop up via HDMI every time I want to stream something.

There is a lag with scrolling, so it doesn't work that well if you try and use your TV as a monitor to view web pages/articles.

Well based off yours and a few others descriptions, I bought mine today at bestbuy! I'm excited to try it out!!!

The Chromecast just got A LOT better because HBO GO is now compatible. I tried it out this morning and it seemed to work perfectly. Plus, with all the commercials on TV lately, I have a feeling more apps will be coming and/or the SDK will finally be official for developers to use.

Other than making the SDK official, they need to make casting from Chrome smoother. From time to time, it seems to make the quality of my stream go down and occasionally drop the feed. It's annoying as hell, but still more convenient than plugging in my computer via HDMI or just watching on my laptop screen.

After 6 months, I'm still loving my Chromecast. I'm still mostly using it for HBOGO, Youtube, Netflix and Pandora. I try and watch NBCSports or some of the sketchier streaming sites via Chrome browser and that doesn't work all that well. It seems to make my stream choppy and then cuts out. I have an older wireless router, so I'm not sure if the issue is that it doesn't work well or if I just need a newer router. But, today is the day I've been waiting for. Google has officially released the SDK to developers. Any app can now take advantage of the Chromecast. I'm crossing my fingers for WatchESPN, NBCSports, any of the TV networks (especially CBS since they aren't on Hulu) and maybe Spotify.

WatchESPN, Google+ and MLS Live all got Chromecast support today. I'm sure the timing for ESPN was to coincide with the World Cup. Not sure why it took so long for G+ to get the update, but this gives a real simple way to share photos on your TV.

Hopefully the MLS and WatchESPN apps work better than the apps on my Roku. At times ESPN can be unwatchable. I think during the USMNT game last weekend I saw the same play 10 times because the feed kept jumping back to that point. By halftime I was 10 minutes behind.

Isnt watchespn kinda worthless without a Comcast login?

You can still get ESPN3, but yeah for most of the stuff you need a cable subscription. But, if you have a 2nd TV, but no cable box it would work. Or, if you're traveling, it's a good app for watching on your tablet and now TV. Or you can use someone elses login, if they give you their info (would be a good option for kids going to college i would think). Same issue holds for HBOGO.

How are you liking the Chromecast? I know you picked one up a few months ago. Are you still using it?

My wife still gets pissed when our wifi router decides to throw a shit fit and drop internet connection. But she uses it almost as often as I do. It was a great investment! thank you so much for recommending it last year.

Nope. All streaming content from ESPN needs a cable subscription... at least with the providers they contract through. If not, you are SOL.

I get ESPN3 with just an internet subscription. I don't get the live streaming of the actual ESPN channels. Those require a TV subscription. Maybe Comcast is different.
