Grading the Moves

NEW JERSEY NETS

What they gave up: Jason Kidd, Malik Allen, Antoine Wright, Jason Collins.

What they got: Devin Harris, DeSagana Diop, Trenton Hassell, Maurice Ager, Keith Van Horn, Stromile Swift, 2008 and 2010 first-round draft picks, $3 million.

Analysis: As soon Kidd quit on his teammates last month, the Nets had to move him. Considering everyone in the league knew that, they still received a nice package in return: a talented young player in Harris, expiring contracts and draft picks. Not bad.

Grade: A-.

I don't like grading the deal now.

Time will tell IMO, 8 years ago I thought the future was Marbury and Kenyon, so who knows?

still it's always fun to go back and look at the knee-jerk grades given out for trades and especially drafts.

besides grading trades 3-5 years from now usually favors the team that got youth in return (like the Nets did) if the other team doesn't win a championship or make the finals (like the suns and mavs are trying to do)

I look at it this way: four years ago, when the Nets dumped KMart, Lu Harris, Kittles, Rodney Rogers, etc., they looked a lot worse than they look now. This change is no less dramatic, but I think they are better set for the future.

After the KMart trade, the Nets roster consisted of an injured Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins, Nenad Krstic, Alonzo Mourning, Ron Mercer, Eric Williams, Aaron Williams, Travis Best, Rodney Buford, Brian Scalabrine, Jacque Vaughn, Zoran Planinic and Jabari Smith. By year's end, after trades, injuries, etc., the team had gone through 22 players.

The Nets did have a number of picks beyond their own, but most were heavily protected...a Clippers first rounder - protected 1-14 in 2005, or unprotected in 2006; a Philadelphia first rounder - protected 1-8 in 2005 or protected 1-5 in 2006 or unprotected in 2007; a Denver first rounder - protected 1-5 in 2006, protected 1-2 in 2007, or unprotected in 2008, plus a Clippers second rounder - unprotected in 2005. They also had two trade exceptions totalling $10.3 million and $5.2 million.

After the JKidd trade, the Nets' roster consists of Vince Carter, Richard Jefferson, Nenad Krstic, Devin Harris, Marcus Williams, Josh Boone, Sean Williams, Desagana Diop, Trenton Hassell, Maurice Ager,
Darrell Armstrong, Boki Nachbar, Stromile Swift, Jamaal Magloire and Keith Van Horn. The Nets have gone through 21 players this season already and it's always possible that after KVH is dropped, they could sign another player.

The Nets have two first round draft picks beyond their own and with lesser protections than in 2005...a Dallas first rounder - protected 1-14 in 2008, unprotected in 2009; a Dallas first rounder - unprotected in 2010 (2011 if Dallas falls into the lottery in 2008). They also have two much smaller trade exceptions, of $1.68 million and $770,000.

I disagree. You can evaluate value currently.

The Mets traded Kazmir for V Zambrano. If Kazmir blew his arm out the next day and Zambrano had a productive career, it still would've been a horrendous trade.
