I like your approach in theory, but for it to be relevant you're going to have to try to convince the SAT Nazis that kids should be allowed such leeway when taking college entrance exams. I doubt you would be able to affect their scoring system with your logic and the effect might be a kid not making it into their school of choice.

That's funny because I tutor high school kids on SAT/ACT English and writing. I tell them that this shit is a hoop they have to jump through and then can pretty much forget it. If they're going to get the basics wrong then they will get graded down for it pretty hard in college. But who here knows when you use who and when you use whom? Who (or whom?) really cares?

I don't recall what the mistake was, but it was something along the lines do "there" versus "their". Of course a presentation of that magnitude is much different than dicking around on the Internet.

Yeah, that's pretty understandable and definitely basic shit you have to get right or communication may break down.

But make a presentation and you don't follow a comma rule or use the past perfect instead of the simple past in the dependant clause... yeah no one is going to care.

I got an email (god knows why) promoting engaging "father's" in family life. I sent them a reply that it should be "fathers" and please take me off your email list. I see signs in stores with words spelled incorrectly or apostrophe used for plural. Even in newspapers. I just reviewed a document where someone wrote "Mobil [a company] phase" when they needed to write "Mobile [an adjective] phase". Shit, does anyone proofread anymore or do they just think Word will do it for them?

Having studied linguistics, I have many boring things to say about grammar. However, the one thing I always tell my students is:

There is no such thing as grammar. If you say it, it's correct. Grammar is simply a way that humans document the rules of language, and the rules are always changing. Learning when to use who and when to use whom is much less important than learning how to say what you want to say clearly, effectively and persuasively.

I blame the teachers for the death of grammar and spelling, and you just proved it.

What really pisses me off is "Who not That." I even considered making that one of my screen names when I posted on ESPN. I would have changed to that name whenever I corrected all the Who not Thats.

And let us not forget the confusion of "you and I" vs "you and me" and "he and she" vs "him and her". I was listening to a speaker the other day and he got "you and I"/"you and me" wrong every single time. I forget what he was talking about.

A good way to figure out if you should say "I" or "me" is delete the other person from the sentence and try it. Sometimes that makes it clearer.
