Grizzlies Re-Sign Miles

I just took off my Blazers license plate frame. I hung up all my jerseys in the back of my closet. I removed the window sticker from my gf's car...

The threatening e-mail, the treatment of Darius, the way the league and 29 other teams has claimed that Darius can still play... I just can not support the team right now. A lot of you will probably think I am a bandwagon fan for this but it is really tough for me to continue to support the actions of the Blazer organization considering what has transpired over the last three days...

I just can't agree with any of the recent actions, I didn't agree with the actions of the Blazers' organization when they cut Darius. I can't disagree with them having to face the music and pay Darius what they owed him, but the way they have handled everything was poor on their part. They have quickly made me disinterested in anything they do on the court, because they can't handle things correctly off the court.

So you'll support the team through the shenanigans of Rider, Wallace, Stoudamire, Wells, Z-Bo, Miles, etc, etc, etc. Those guys stuck it to the team, the NBA, the city of Portland, and the fans. Now that Portland management maybe wants to stick it back to Miles, you end your support of the team. Talk about a joke.

This is a huge overreaction thread. Assuming that there is no secret e-mail floating around out there, the Blazers have no case. It would be impossible to prove that Memphis wasn't legitimately giving him a shot, even if he only plays 2 games.

Some of the things I've read here have been pretty funny. That the lawsuit is justified because Cuban agrees with it? Since when is Mark Cuban the model of professional behavior? That it's a giant conspiracy for Memphis to help the Lakers by screwing the Balzers? Seriously? The Lakers are playing for a championship, they have bigger teams to worry about than Portland who is still a few years away from contending.


You guys keep referring to the LT money that will be paid out and how Paul Allen will get that money back. As fans, that shouldn't really matter to us. Let me ask you this: If he does get that money back, say the league does not impose the tax based on this technicality, would you be happy with that or do you think it shouldn't count against the cap, the one part of this that should matter to fans? I understand Allen's gripe about the LT, the Blazers did not know they were going to be in that situation when they signed finished their roster, but if Miles is healthy, insurance should not have covered his contract and it most definately should count against the salary cap.

it is painfully obvious that there will be no legitimate "legal challenge" against the grizzlies for signing a basketball player who wants to play basketball. the blazers tried to pull a fast one by classifying this player as out-for-his-career when he is not even currently injured. they got called on it.

i don't have a problem with the plan, as it was in our best interests. the childish, kevin mchale-ish manner in which it was handled is another story. a fun drama for us fans, but time for the team to move on, as i'm sure they will.

Unless he has miraculously regrown cartilage in his knee his injury is still the same and the diagnosis would still stand. If that is the case it is simply Darius ignoring a doctor's advice. An easy way to clear this all up is to have two or three doctors (as suggested on another board) look at Darius' knee as it is right now and see if that cartilage has regrown and he is no longer playing bone on bone. It would also be interesting to learn if Darius actually passed physicals for Boston and Memphis instead of just waiving it - I know you can waive passing physicals in trades, but do not know if you can do it in signings.

The 'treatment' of Darius? You mean having a doctor who was supported by both the NBA and players union, come in and say his knee is shot (and doing it within the rules)? Where Darius gets paid the rest of his salary, despite not playing a minute?

it's not a big deal dude. yes, it was childish, yes, miles is healthy enough to play, yes, we don't deserve the salary reduction. those things aren't enough for one's support of the team to wane. it's ok to support the blazers and laugh at the way they handled this at the same time.

I run a 'Just Sports' store out here and I always were Blazer Jersey's and T-shirts and I LOVE talking shit to Suns fans. All my regular customers know this, all the people at the bars I frequent, and anyone who sees my car with it's license plate frame, bumper stickers, and window sticker. It was tough to go through the Jail Blazer era, but I lived on Denver avenue and Portland Blvd, so I felt much more connected with the team even when I couldn't stand the actions of a lot of their players I loved the fire some would bring to the court.

Now, to go to work, come home to the board, everyone I know personally knows the franchise I follow and love dearly acted like little children. And when I talk about the mistreatment of Miles, I don't mean Miles personally I mean the Miles' contract. Fact is the NBA has guaranteed contracts, and when you agree to sign a player you own that contract. Sometime that player turns out to be overrated, a bumb, an asshole, and/or neve reaches his potential. That happens, it's a gamble. Look at the RLEC, how he ever got that contract is beyond me, but somebody thought that is what he was worth and signed him to that deal. Darius may not deserve what he is getting paid but the Blazers agreed to pay him that money, and they were going to pay him either way. For the president of the team to threaten other teams is a childish move, and it looks poorly on your franchise. It's an unprecedented move because of it's ludicrousness.

I'm still a fan, and yes it was 2:30 am when I got home and made my post last night, had a little to much rum and coke. I just hope from here on out the Trail Blazers actions on the court out weigh the saga off the court. Here is to Brandon coming back healthy, moving the RLEC to get some support, and Greg's development

Everyone knows the Blazers forced Darious out. Many times he said he was ready to come back and the Blazers kept him on IR. When a doctor agreeded that it was career ending... what a break for us... but you can still see what the Blazers were trying to do.

Now... I don't think we can tell whether his injury was career ending or not. Yet. It sure looks like it was... having played only a few minutes since... but the rule is what the rule is. He does have the right to try to come back though... and the Blazers by sending that threatening email out... in my opinion... crossed a line that they shouldn't have. Y

Yeah... Miles is probably being used and he just doesn't see that... but I am sure he wants to come back. The Blazers can't honestly know for sure whether a team is trying to screw them or get another player... so they should have just let it go. By saying nothing they *might* have let the whole thing slip by... but they just put a big old attention sign out there by sending that email.

If anyone is going to get bad karma from this... it is the Blazers... and honestly... I think they will get sued by Miles and his agent whether he plays again or not. Threatening other teams to try to keep Miles from working... is not right. Again... Miles may not realize what is going on... and yeah they should probably change the rule to require a set number of minutes or something like that... but that email was very low class from a team that has worked so hard on fixing their reputation.

I agree with much of what you posted and hope this Miles thing is done now but I have a feeling the Blazers are not done and if Memphis only keeps Miles for the one 10 day contract and only plays him 2-3 games the Blazers will sue Memphis and maybe more. I'm sure the Blazers and PA wouldn't send this letter out without thinking this through with their lawyers. If they don't back it up then they will look very bad and foolish. This has really nothing to do with Miles and paying him but more about other teams being unethical and trying to damage the Blazers. Miles is going to get his money no matter what happens. I do think Miles will not last and will be lucky to play the rest of the year if he ever get meaningful minutes.

Not a big deal to lose the cap space, imo. Either way, we will still have around 8 mil this off-season (and even more at around 14mil if we renounce Diogu and Frye, which I think we will)... And I doubt we would sign a player that would cost more than that. I actually never thought we would sign a FA in the off-season anyway, and certainly not one that would cost a lot.

We still have the ability to trade and take back a lot more cap.

And we still can do a trade mid-season, which will render this moot.

The only thing i'm mad about is how this was handled. I just don't like it. It feels embarassing and just NOT something this organization would do, unless maybe Paul Allen forced them or something. IDK. In an interview, KP seemed like he knew it was a bad idea. But even with this, I agree with what was said in the email... it was just silly to put it out there, and then have the media find out, because they are really messing with the wording and making it sound completely different than it is.
