Hall of Famer Nate Thurmond has died at 74 after battling leukemia.

So sorry to hear this news. I loved watching him play. I remember when he was traded to the Bulls, we thought we finally had that elite C to match up against Wilt and Kareem - he did do that in his day.

Thurmond played 11 of his 14 seasons with the Warriors and retired after the 1976-1977 season, one year after leading the “Miracle” Cavaliers to an improbable trip to the NBA finals.

Thurmond was like other starting centers in points and rebounds. But in defense, he had a body that was both slim yet muscular, so somehow he was a little better than others. He was 6-11 (always add 2 inches to get the equivalent to today). When Chamberlain said that Thurmond was his hardest defender, is when I upgraded Thurmond in my mind. All I remember is that Wilt said that in the 1972 or 73 playoffs. I think it was 72. Jabbar said it a year or two later...till then, I had thought that Wilt might have said it because he and Thurmond had been teammates.
