Harbaugh to coach Niners

I think he's going to be a great NFL coach just like his brother.

Sucks to be Andrew Luck right now.

I don't think Luck cared. If he did, he'd have waited a few days to make his decision, since it was clear at the time he announced his intent to return to Stanford that Harbaugh wasn't going to take very long to make his decision.

I don't know.... I wonder if he'll change his mind.

5 million a year? Wasn't Miami supposed to offer up to 8 million a year?

Yup. It appears he wanted to stay in the Bay Area, as reports had him most interested in $5 million/year offers from the 49ers and Stanford.

Now if only he could coax Luck into the draft and then trade for the draft pick

If only. Or convince Luck to enter the draft and pull a John Elway/Eli Manning and refuse to sign with the Panthers after they draft him #1...only sign with the 49ers.

As a niner fan, im excited!

Me too. This is the first coach I've been excited about since.......... God..... I don't know honestly. I liked Siefert and Mariucci had his strong points, but nobody ever really lived up to Walsh.

Walsh was once in a generation. I don't expect another 49ers coach in my lifetime to live up to Walsh.

Harbaugh definitely has the right stuff for college. We'll see how he does in the pros.

Honestly, i'm not sure if he's perfect for the pros. His brother seems like a better fit for the NFL.

Neither do I, but I must say I've been less than thrilled with Ericson, Nolan, and Singletary.

My hope is that the 49ers can get Blaine Gabbert at #7. I think Gabbert is the best combination of most talented quarterback prospect in the draft and most similar to Luck in that he has no glaring flaws. The main strikes against him are that he's unproven in a pro style offense where he needs to make multiple reads and that he doesn't check down enough when his receiver down the field is taken away. While nothing is guaranteed, these seem like the types of things Harbaugh can best address.

Gabbert's strengths are numerous: he's a big quarterback, he has a big arm, he's very mobile and athletic, he has accuracy and poise in the pocket, he seems like an intelligent guy. I think this is the type of guy that Harbaugh could plausibly turn into a star.

One thing that Walsh was good at was judging coaching talent. The Niners haven't been able to replicate that since he left. The guy had so many successful understudies in guys like Holmgren, Dennis Green, George Siefert, etc.

You guys need a pass rush badly. And cornerbacks, and safeties, and maybe more OL. QB is a pressing need as well but you gotta go BPA and not reach for a guy just because of position. Besides, Harbaugh is touted as a great QB developer and I've read that he plucked Luck out of HS where he wasn't a star or very highly rated and turned him into a top prospect. Obviously if he likes a QB at 7 thats good but I wouldn't be surprised if they take the best available 3-4 OLB/DE or CB and take a lesser known QB that Harbaugh likes later. I keep hearing Niners fans talk about how much of a talented roster they have but in my (Raiders fan) eyes there are a lot of weaknesses and while QB is probably the biggest a pass rush is a close second.

No, Luck was definitely a star in high school. There's a good article on Darron Thomas that talks about Luck (they played against each other in high school a lot).

Luck, at nearby Stratford High School, was the talk of the town, the son of former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck, groomed since childhood to line up in a shotgun formation.

Rivals.com rated him as the nation's sixth-best dual-threat quarterback (whereas Luck was the fourth-rated drop-back-style QB), and that had a lot of college coaches doing double-takes.

Care to explain?

Harbaugh runs about as Pro Style of an offense as it gets. He's a great schematic coach and matches Singletary in the intensity department. I completely understand why Harbaugh is a hot commodity right now.

I don't think Gabbert would be a reach. Luck was actually highly rated out of high school, just not rated as a phenom. Gabbert was actually even more highly rated out of high school. Gabbert has a ton of talent, but he hasn't been developed by a guy like Harbaugh. I don't think the difference between Luck and Gabbert is simply Harbaugh, but I think the gap between them would be substantially less had Harbaugh coached Gabbert instead.

I think the 49ers' offensive line is actually in decent shape. They weren't great in 2010, but they were developing two rookies on the line and their best lineman, Joe Staley, wasn't fully healthy. The main concern is that Chilo Rachal hasn't progressed since his rookie year, so another guard wouldn't be a bad idea, but I don't think offensive line is a crying need like it was a year or two ago.

Cornerback is a huge need. I rate cornerback and quarterback as the two largest needs. However, I think the quarterback position is harder to fill and if you get a chance at a franchise guy, you should take it. I think Gabbert has that potential...if the 49ers feel that way, I think they should take him at #7. Positional importance and scarcity factors into who the best player available is.

I don't think the 49ers are a tremendously talented team that simply underachieved under Singletary. But I think they are more talented than their record. They dropped several games to good/very good teams over the past two seasons by close margins. While I think they can stand to improve in multiple places, I think the two places that could improve them a lot, in a hurry, are quarterback and cornerback. If they were to find strong performers at quarterback and one of the cornerback spots, I think they could reach a tipping point and win the division going away (the fact that the division sucks is certainly part of that). They need more than one strong off-season to be a serious contender, but this might be their best chance to get a franchise quarterback.

All of this relies on the fact that I don't believe Gabbart is a reach at 7. I think he's the best quarterback prospect in the draft, with Luck out, and legitimately a top-ten talent. If I didn't feel that way, I wouldn't advocate his selection. If the team views a defensive lineman or cornerback as clearly the best player when they select, I would be happy with that pick.

From a personality standpoint (which I know is huge having been recruited by many major D1 head coaches), John fits that of a laid-back Larry, whereas Jim is a fire-and-brimstone elbow-grease guy. Being a head coach is 50/50 in managing the team and game-planning, I'm not sure Jim would be as great at that (especially the former) than John.

i was a big fan of George Seifert and was decent with Steve Mariucci. Its strange how Seifert didn't do so well in Carolina.
As a 49ner fan, Singletary couldn't get it done by the third year and I'm glad he was fired.

Siefert didn't have the Hall of Famers around him in Carolina.
