We will regret passing on the BPA in this draft. Barnes is an elite athlete with a game made for the NBA. A clear cut superior college prospect, nearly every team in the league would've taken Barnes over the player we took. I'll closely follow Barnes during the next year and expect it to be quite painful.

It's hard being a lifelong fan of a franchise that makes the same repeated mistakes. Martell over CP3 and Deron because we had Telfair. Bowie over Jordan since we had Clyde. Lillard over Barnes since we might have Batum. It's going to be a long, long season. The John Nash Era 2.0 has begun!

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

I agree.

This was a huge blunder. With CLE rumored to be offering Nic a huge contract Barnes was the BPA and filled a need.

Golden State, you're welcome.

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

oh, free agency started already? interesting.

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

Barnes is a tremendously flawed player. He's never played up to his athleticism and his production never matched up to the initial hype of his prospectdom. I'd say that someone like Martell Webster is a pretty good comparison actually: a guy who looked like a great prospect on paper, but wasn't able to put it together on the actual court.

I think this is an excellent article about him, from Grantland:

It's easy to blame all this weird, precocious ugliness as well as Barnes's basketball troubles on the "fast-paced media," high school recruiting, and big-time college athletics, but the somewhat liberating truth is that Harrison Barnes just wasn't a great basketball player. He was good, sure, and shot the ball with a confidence that went far beyond his youth, but he never really developed any other part of his game. He'd go crashing into the boards and pull down a jaw-dropping rebound, but then he'd follow that with 10 minutes of standing around on defense. He never figured out how to get to the basket. He never found a way to reliably distribute the ball in transition. Instead, Barnes's improvements were the sort that could be easily dispensed through the media. He put on 15 pounds of muscle between his freshman and sophomore years. He "committed himself to defense." He "came back to win a national championship." He did everything he could do to build the perception that he was competing the right way. But he did not really improve as a basketball player.

I don't think Barnes is certain to fail at the NBA level, but I don't think he's any kind of elite prospect or a terrible pass-over.

I agree Draco...

But most of the posters here go out of there way to defend the mistakes of this organization, no matter how bad the picks are....

FOUR drafts in a row where POR has flailed and picked the wrong guys....and somehow we are supposed to feel vindicated a year from now?

hardly....All I feel is sad for the laughingstock that this organization has become....

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

To me, Lillard was the BPA. Now maybe I'm a fucking retard, but it seems like the people who actually make the decisions may have agreed with me.

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

In 2-3 years Drummond will be who we regret passing on.

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

I don't understand how you guys can be so sure the Blazers completely fucked up when none of these guys have even playing a second in an NBA game yet.

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

I'd like to say, trust the professional Blazer staff who spent hundreds of hours scouting these guys, but how many times have Blazer fans been right over the Blazer management? Too often over the last 5 years!

Which Blazers fans? Most "Blazers fans'" predictions and selections have been terrible. There was a sizeable contingent that wanted Adam Morrison, that thought Webster was the best pick, thought trading Andre Miller for Raymond Felton was a great deal, etc. Considering that "Blazers fans" as a group can make about 20 different selections for one draft pick, it's not exactly surprising that one of those 20 ended up being the "right" one.

That is what bugs me about the Lillard pick. In the past, Blazers have been burned when picking for need. Olshey comes in and says BPA regardless of position and many were happy to hear that. In the end Olshey can talk until he is blue justifying this was the BPA and tiers and blah blah blah. . . this was a need based pick. We aren't stupid here in Ptd. Maybe need outweighed the difference between the two players, but don't tell us position doesn't matter in the draft, it clearly mattered.

Probably not ... but if he does pan out then we'll regret not taking him much MUCH more badly than we'll regret passing on Harrison Barnes -- If that guy makes it? Jesus he'll be a terror.

Very true ... but in the end it's always mattered.

You mean the same guys that picked

Claver?

Babbitt & Armon?

Nolan Smith?

I have ZERO faith in those idiots..........

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

All comes down to Batum Resigning with the Blazers. And of-course if Lillard can become a starter in this league.

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

Olshey didn't pick any of them, and Babbitt was the only lottery pick.

(Just calling Babbitt a lottery pick makes me feel icky.. Hopefully I don't feel that way about Leonard in 2 years.)

Um, Neil Olshey. Ever heard of him?

At least keep your bs straight.

I've been a vocal advocate of BPA, but need should be a consideration when you have guys who are about evenly graded. If there's a talent disparity, take the better guy and use free agency and trades to "even out" the roster. But it's not always possible to deal a player for exactly equal value at another position, so if guys are about equally talented (in your evaluation), it's much more efficient to take the guy who better fills a need.

It's the tier system.. Presumably Barnes and Lillard were both in the same tier according to Blazers scouts and Olshey. Within the tier, you draft on need.

Wow. He was a lotto pick wasn't he? How the hell did I forget that? Chrissakes ...

*back to the Glenfiddich*

It's not bullshit...

What significant player from the draft has POR gotten since 2008 when they got Batum?

NONE.....

You are hoping that this years' draft picks will be differeet...and when they are not then you will come up with some other excuse NEXT year....

Seriously when does the madness stop?

How many passes do you give this franchise?

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

I've got a good feeling about Lillard. This league is dominated by athletic guards who can create their own shot. That's Lillard in a nut shell. If you really want a Harrison Barnes, you could always trade for Rudy Gay or Danny Granger. I hear they're both available.

So the Blazers are doomed to never ever draft good players again? Your pessimism is not only showing, buy you are flinging that shit around like a chimpanzee with actual shit.

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

For me it comes down to some VERY basics. One, we are re-signing Batum, a better player than Barnes. Two Barnes cannot dribble the damn ball. Three, we already traded away M. Webster - we don't need 2.0. Four, Lillard = Porter 2.0.

Apparently you missed my point that Olshey just got here.

Keep yous bs straight

Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

If Neil sees Lillard as a P&R guard I hope we develop Leonard in that type of system. With his size and leaping ability he'd thrive.
