I know that he has done well this year and that although KP basically skipped over talking about Koponen, he was raving about Freeland. Well, that's great, but I want more. What does he play like? Face up or back to the basket? How athletic? range? shotblocker? just, how good has be been.

I only watched him a little in Summer league the year we drafted him, and I didn't focus on his play, but I do recall that he seemed pretty athletic; able to go up high to catch lobs and he's certainly got the length to be a good rebounder.

There's not a whole lot of video out there, other than some brief youtube clips with him hitting a couple of mid-range jumpers and flushing a lob, but beyond bowie has a nice "everything Joel Freeland" piece from a couple of weeks ago.

Some recaps of his play this year:
Draftexpress.com:
Joel Freeland’s (#7 on rights held ranking) scouting report was just updated back in November, and there isn’t a great deal to add to that besides saying that he’s continued to play well. He’s playing solid minutes in the ACB and continues to score efficiently and pull down plenty of rebounds, particularly on the offensive end. The fact that he ranks 6th in the league in PER while being amongst the league leaders in a host of other categories is obviously no joke considering that he just turned 22.

In the one game we saw in Madrid he did a good job putting his athleticism on display, going after rebounds on both ends, chasing blocks and generally being very active. Offensively, he looked somewhat tentative, not being much of a presence for Gran Canaria, which is not a huge surprise considering his limitations on this end of the floor. He’s mostly a finisher at this point (albeit a very good one at that) and seems to struggle when asked to do much more than that, as he lacks great footwork or much range on his jumper. He’s also somewhat foul prone and clearly not very experienced, averaging a high amount of turnovers relative to his role.

Although it’s pretty clear that that Freeland is not ready to contribute in the NBA, it seems like this summer will be the time for Portland to bring him over if they indeed intend on getting him in a Blazers uniform. He has an NBA escape clause and is drawing major interest around Europe from some of the top teams around, for example Real Madrid, Barcelona and Fortitudo Bologna, who all appear to have interest. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Gran Canaria decide to cash in and sell his rights at some point, which would likely make Freeland’s spot on the NBA rookie scale (around $800k gross) look paltry relative to the new contract he’d receive.

and this part from the beyondbowie article kind of caught my eye:

Joel Freeland is listed as a 6'10"/6'11" forward currently with CB Gran Canaria, of the Spanish ACB League (same league as Rudy) and has been described as both a power forward and center. His playing style has been compared to David Lee of the Knicks and former NBA player Keon Clark.

As long as this team can add a quality veteran banger like Antonio McDyess or Jason Maxiell, I don't think there'd be much risk associated with bringing Joel over next season (assuming of course that KP even wants to do that), since this is the last time in a long time he'll likely be available -- if ever. :dunno:

Sure, bring him over and give him Shavlik's or Ruffin's spot. He has more "upside" than either of those two, but from the comments about him being turnover prone, foul prone, lacking footwork, being tentative on offense and not having any real offensive game other than finishing, it doesn' sound like he's ready to be part of the regular rotation.

Nope, probably not, but if they can swing a deal for a true veteran backup I think you'd have to feel pretty good about a fontline that featured LaMarcus, Joel, Greg, <fill-in-the-blank-big-guy> and Freeland added as some emergency depth and a bit of a project. As much as we don't want to admit it, Przybilla isn't getting any younger and you wonder what's going to happen to him when his contract is up in a couple of years or if Greg takes that next leap and gobbles up most of the available minutes at center, it might serve the team to have another big in the pipeline.

Here's a Joel Freeland highlight reel from the ACB website:
http://acbtv.acb.com/video/1684

he looks pretty good to me.

He has good length and finishes strong, but other than that, it's typical highlight reel stuff - a couple blocks and a whole bunch of dunks. Hard to judge the overall quality of his play based on those clips. I'm sure you could put together a much more impressive highlight reel for Channing Frye, but we all know enough about Channing's game to know he's not our answer at back-up 4.

Definitely, bring him over while he's cheap. I'm all for giving him the 12th spot on the roster. It's not like Ruffin or Shavlik would be missed.

Sure, highlight reels always need to be taken with a huge grain of salt, but I like the way he moves, he's obviously athletic, and then he's got the numbers to back up that highlight reel (one of the best PERs in the ACB, and great numbers considering his 17-20 minutes per game).

As for a more impressive highlight reel for Channing? I think you'd have to go back to his rookie year when he actually rebounded and dunked in traffic, otherwise I'm not sure how exciting it is to watch 2 minutes of 20 foot jumpers.

I really hope our backup PF is a little better than a guy who's doing so-so in Europe.

I think the kind of backup PF this team needs isn't another young (rookie) player with little experience.

That is the problem. He has played well enough in Europe they will want to try and keep him. This year though, he does have an NBA escape clause in his contract. Lucky for us!

Right. I don't think anybody is eager to bring Freeland over to fill the second spot on the depth chart. Most of us would rather see a veteran in the mold of Antonio McDyess and then have Freeland fill the Ruffin/Shavlik, third stringer spot.

:twothumbs:

yeah man, add Dyess and bring him over for sure, it's perfect really. If theoretically for us next year it was Blake and Outlaw gone and Andre Miller and Mcdyess in we'd be sooooo much smarter and better on defense.

I really like the thought of Jennings coming here for some reason I think we could get him at a good value in this draft.

Bayless/Outlaw/Sergio somehow for Jennings/something...

Miller/Jennings/Koponen
Roy/Rudy (with Rudy and Brandon getting a lot of burn at PG)
Webster/Batum
Aldridge/Mcdyess/Freeland
Oden/Pryzbilla

then we got three more roster spots I guess

He had a few good games this year - a couple against the Spurs, and the game against the Cavs come to mind. Plus, he played well at the end of last season after Joel got hurt. I remember at the Spurs game on March 1, I was impressed with his strong aggressive play attacking the rim.

Sure, you'd have to wade through 500 minutes of softness to find two minutes of "highlights", but that's the thing about highlight reels, they only show the good, not the bad.

Travis Outlaw would have a great highlight reel full of game winning shots and high flying dunks. Based on that, You'd think he was the next Michael Jordan. Of course, the highlight reel wouldn't show him disappearing in the play-offs, shooting 30%, and constantly losing Shane Battier for wide open 3s or backdoor dunks.

That's why I put little stock in highlight clips.

And I agreed with you that highlight reels are usually not to be trusted. But I wasn't posting the highlight reel as some sort of scouting tape, all it shows is how big he is, some of his athleticism, and how he looks on the court (to a certain degree). "GOD" asked if anyone had seen him play, and with the dearth of video out there with Freeland in it, I figured I would at least provide the ACB clips just in case people wanted to put their eyes on him, instead of just reading his stat line and scouting report from draftexpress.com

Having said all that, Freeland has had a great statistical year in the ACB and most of the reports (KP talking about him at the end of the season, Jonathan Givony's Eurocup and Copa Del Rey reports) all seem to suggest he could be a quality 4/5 with some upside and some good physical tools. I don't think anybody is pimping him out to be something he's not.
