I was a little surprised by Oregons rank, and Texas' rank. Of course, people will just say it's because there's hardly any minorities in Oregon, but I would think that would seem to be unrelated (see: Montana, Idaho, and the Dakotas) and the more diverse states as proof that it's probably not related.

yeah, it's kind of an odd metric. What constitutes a "group". Jim Bob and Steve hanging a "no wummin allowed" sign on their clubhouse? Registered 501c3's with mission statements containing hate speech?

I'd be more interested in something like "population who are active in hate groups" or something.

I wondered that too. At first I was wondering if population plays a role, but I don't know if it does. It's not like Montana or Idaho have huge populations. And Oregons population is less than Washington.

I was genuinely surprised by Texas. I figured it being much more diverse than Oregon, it would mean that there aren't asm uch problems. Probably naive in thinking so (although it seems to put the whole "lilly white" stereotype of Oregon into place).

I wonder who identifies the Hate Groups?

The following is a paragraph out of a letter to the editor of the Newspaper in my town.
Would a person like this be identifing the hate groups?

"Racism is a thing of the past and we have tried hard to right the wrongs. But racism is a thing of the present, too. Often actions and words toward African Americans impact Hispanics and immigrants in general, and the poor, and the elderly living on a low, fixed income. This large group of Americans is experiencing today: Slash of food stamps, low minimum wage, school closures, cuts in unemployment insurance, suspended voting rights, stop and frisk laws, stand your ground gun laws and a totally broken criminal justice system, combined with the “War on Drugs.” And finally, with our advancing communication sites, we are experiencing more evidence of hateful thoughts toward an individual or group who is “Not One of Us.” Hateful and frightening."


If you don't have "stand your ground" laws, what is the expected alternative? Run forever?

from what I can tell by further reading, it seems that a "hate group" can be anyone that does not agree with a liberal ideology. For instance, Rush and Lars Larson both are considered "hate speech" and fans of their programs are considered and hate group.

Worldwide, most hate groups are not of caucasian membership. Caucasians are a true minority in the big picture.

As far as really hating people for their differences, it's primarily a third world thing. Ignorance reigns where life's basic needs are unmet.

But thanks to the OP for giving me an excuse to once again bring out a favorite song from my childhood days.

since the over whelming majority of hate groups (in the US, since that is what this was about) is made up of whites, AND this was a study on white hate groups (and not just hate groups period), that is why it was done.

But feel free to find out other hate groups (I have no doubt they exist). But you'll see that their #'s aren't as big or prominent. Despite some peoples rants that being white has made them a target for racism and racist activities.
