You can do peritoneal dialysis either manually or by machine. Unless you lose power or the machine while traveling you always use the machine. Your belly has a perit0neal membrane which acts identically to your kidneys. You pump in a sugar solution which, over time, filters your blood, via osmosis. Periodically You withdraw the sugar solution which is now yellow from your belly.
I've been warned to maintain my renal diet even while doing peritoneal dialysis. PD is done by machine at night while you sleep. The other drawback is you must be EXTREMELY clean.
