Posted this over in the MMA section but thought I would post it here too...

So recently I was given a new banana heavy bag for free. The bag is 6 ft and 100 lbs. I had planned on putting it in my basement... btw I'm an idiot.

My basement's ceiling is probably around 6 foot 10, with beams coming down from it making those sectiosn shorter. the problem is, and im really hoping i can explain this well over the internet, is that the chain that holds the bag up is too long for my ceiling. If i were to hook it to the bag would still be touching the ground and slumped over a little bit.

The chain is connected to the bag on each side of it, and then it meets in the middle like a normal heavy bag chain does. my question is could i disconnect it from the middle, and then reconnect it back together only on a lower part of the chain? if this makes no sense at all tell me and I'll take some pics and upload them to explain what it is I'm talking about..

Sure. Cut the chains attached to the bag, making them shorter and put a ring/open link through the now shorter chains. Use another chain to hook to the ceiling.

Thanks, I suck at anything that involves construction or tools or anything. I can barely wipe my own ass... so I didn't know if this would be a bad idea or not.

Changing the angle of the chain drop will change the swing of the bag, but you don't have much of a choice.

Why even bother cutting the chain? Just hang it from a link closer to the bag and have some excess chain hanging after the hook. If it rattles and annoys you just wrap it to the connected chain with duct tape. Cutting the chain would be a bitch without the right tools, and it unnecessary...You will want those extra links if you move and take the bag with you.

damm you and your common sense! I hate people who make things way easier than they need to be! :devilwink:

I suppose I could do that... the chains are pretty big. There are four chains that come up from the bag and connect at the top.... are you suggesting I buy like a S hook and put all four chains through the S hook just lower on the bag... and then hang the top of it on the bracket? That's goign to be a pretty big S hook too accommodate it.

No........

Thats not how my chain is though... here is my shitty diagram

The four chains meet at the top and then its hooked on right away.. there is no extra chain after the four connect.

oh...shit...hmmm, let me think about that.

So what the highest point of your ceiling? If I understand you right there is a normal drywall cieling but every few feet there is an exposed beam.

LIKE THIS? LINK

If thats how it is then what is the measurement from the actual drywall ceiling? (not the wood beams)

The ceiling is 7 foot 3 inches from the ground.. with beams coming down 7 inches from the ceiling.

You gotta find a stud in the ceiling then...the standard distance between the two is 16 inches. Maybe buy a stud finder to figure it out....or you can keep nailing holes into the ceiling till you hit the stud (wood). Once you find the stud nail holes on either side of it to find the dead center of it!

Once you find that you need to drill a pilot hole SMALLER than the eyehole threads...This will keep the wood from splintering when you screw in the eye hole screw.

So if you have it hanging for the ceiling then you will have clearence correct?

Or you could dig a hole in the basement floor below where the bag will hang.

no i will not have clearance thats the problem. hanging from ceiling or beams its still touching the floor

A) Get a chainsaw and cut 12 inches from the bottom off, proceed to ducktape the bottom back together.

or

B) Tear down the house, and rebuild it with 8 foot ceilings in the basement.

How do the chains attach to the bag?

how tall is the bag with the chains totally extended upwards.....In other words the bag is 6ft by itself (if im reading you right) how much more height do the chains add if the were fully extended?

Is that a banana in your basement, or are you just happy to see me?

When I first read this post at work today I must have skimmed it too fast because somehow I got the idea that you were talking about a hammock. I couldn't figure out how a hammock could weigh 100 lbs or why you'd want one that did, and is 'banana bag' a hammock brand name, or a style, or some sort of slang?
And really, why would you put a hammock up in the basement anyway?

Ah, I was so confused until I got to the posts with the drawings.

You're in for a bit of work, if I understand correctly. This plan could gain you about 8" or more, depending on the depth of the ceiling/floor joists.

You need more height. The only way to get that is to get above the (assuming drywall, since the floor/ceiling joists are not exposed) drywall ceiling. Find the bay between two joists where you want to hang your bag. Cut out the drywall in the bay, about 14"X14". This will leave a hole in the ceiling, between two joists, drywall cut flush with the joist on two sides. Cut a piece of 2X12 blocking, about 14-1/2" long, to just fit into the space between joists.

Drill a hole in the middle of the 2X12. Mount your hook or eye bolt with a large washer and nut on the top side of the 2X12. You will use 4 angle clips, two on each side of the blocking, to attach the blocking to the joists on each side of it. Angle clips are galv. steel, with two 'legs' of about 2" long, at 90 degrees to each other. You'll find them with the joist hangers at Home Depot or Lowes. Attach one side of the clips (1-1/2" screws or nails) into the joists near each corner (four places) of the blocking. The clips will form four 'ledges' for the blocking to sit on. The other leg of the clips are then attached to the blocking with screws.

When you are done, the nut on the top side of the blocking should be almost up tight against the sub-flooring of the room above. The clips, attached to the joists on each side of the blocking provides four 'ledges' for the blocking to sit on. The blocking is also fastened to the clips that are attached to the joists. It won't be beautiful, but it will get you more height.

If this doesn't get you enough height, there's always Craig's List.:ghoti:

he drew a diagram...look above
No, I mean physically, with a strap or a metal loop or what? I understand that there are four chains.

ok rizzle with the bag up and the chain all the way extended the bag is 7 foot 5. so the chain is 17 inches long when extended.... im about to uplolad some pics to show how the chain is connected.

I understand...no pics needed unless you want to post them for others

Is there a used sports equipment store in your area. There is one in my area called "Play it again sports"

Trade you bag in for a shorter/smaller heavy bag...lol

You dont have any 8 foot ceiling in your house or an outdoor porch you can set it up at? Im running out of ideas

Do you have a vice to hold those "S" hooks in to pry them open and rehook it to a lower chain?

i do not have a vice... but i had a idea in a dream. i would like to note once again that i am a jackass when it comes to stuff like this.. so please if this idea is idiotic be kind.

i was thinkin about putting a piece of wood across the beams.. and then bringin the chains over the board to make it shorten the chains. here is another crap drawing to illustrate.. or try too..

if anything else my neighbor is a carpenter so i can ask him to come over...
