So this intrigued me. So I looked.
They all seem to agree he was a very good player.
His problems were lack of athletic ability and he had no jumper to speak of.
Pretty much his problems now as well.

Other players with the same problems when they declared for the draft:
Andre Miller
Jimmy Butler
Ricky Rubio
Draymond Green...

I think his main problem was that they didn't think his game translated. He was used to being a focal point of the offense (which was largely in the paint) and seemed completely uninterested in defense. Sometimes you're right not to draft those kind of players. Sometimes (e.g., Fred VanVleet) it turns out players like that can make it work in the pros too.

That would be cool if all that happens but as it stands he still can’t shoot. I seen players improve there also.

As of right now, he kind of can.

For March he is 50% from the field, 88% from the line, 36% from 3.

Now is he a stretch 4? Not at the moment, but I like his inside game and his 3ball has promise.

Nah. Most of that from the field is right around the basket and he’s like 22% from three this year. Also was like 0-3 last game from 3.
He’s still got work to do. He’s never gonna be Midrange Melo but he needs a jumper.
Let’s see where he is with another summer and season.
 
I totally missed the boat on Watford.

Two things really stand out to me about him.

1. He can dribble the ball. I can't think of many forwards we've had that I feel this comfortable bringing the ball up the floor against pressure. Reminds me a bit of Batum in that respect, and that's a BIG advantage to have someone other than a guard who is that solid with the handle.

2. He's very savvy, especially considering his age. He's physically limited, but he must be a sponge when it comes to accepting coaching and picking things up. You could actually see him noticeably improve from game to game in some respects. Plus, he makes foul shots. Fundamentally, he's solid.

The athletic limitations probably stick him as a back-up 4 if you figure him into the rotation of a team that could win in the playoffs, but I've changed my opinion on him. He's got what it takes to stick or even to be a chip in a trade.
 
I’ve seen a lot of people overcome athletic limitations with perseverance and determination.
 
He’s just skilled and coordinated. You don’t have to be a crazy athlete to be a starter in the NBA. Some of the best players in the league are average athletes, at best. I also see him developing into a leader. Put him next to Nurk and ride.
 
if watford can keep this going, hell become the best contract in the league

Numerous good plays but that one at 4:30, against a pretty good defender and top 10 pick in Okongwu....that’s legit.
 
Since he started getting 30 minutes a night (six games) Watford has averaged 17.8 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 3 apg, 1.3 bpg. The only other fours that average min 17/7/3/1 are...

man, how did this guy go undrafted, that's Herb Jones he schooled. Then again, Jones should have been a first rounder as well. Is the SEC underrated or something? Serious question because I only watch college ball for draft reasons.

I just think he was viewed as a classic tweener. Teams have been burned before with 6'8" PFs in the draft...unless they are great outside shooters. Guys like Keegan Murray seem to have more value.

Tweeners like Draymond fall in the draft.

His 3 pt stroke is looking better every game. If he can continue to improve in that area.... he could start. With his ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the basket, (or pass) when other bigs try to close out on him on the perimeter, he could really compliment the other starters. More than likely he will come off the bench which should help the backup pgs as well.
 
Love what i'm seeing. He's a diamond in the rough. At times, the game looks easy for him.

Seems like his playmaking/ballhandling was overlooked because hes not doing anything right now he didn't showcase in college. His game has simply translated. The shot has improved, but anyones shot can be worked on. Maybe teams are too fixated on shooting/spacing.

Yeah, I think he can start. He compliments our theoretical lineup next year pretty well. He doesn't need to be a sniper, his playmaking will create space, but if he can knock down threes at an average rate, he can be a lock for a starting job. The idea of two plus playmakers/defenders in the post is super intriguing to me. We'll win the rebounding battle most nights as well, especially when you factor in Nas/Hart
 
I think we'd be getting ahead of things to project Watford as a starter. He looks like a good option for a backup though, especially with that contract he signed. If he continues to improve he might make for a decent starting PF if the Blazers have significantly upgraded the SF position. But having Watford at PF and another player at the same level at SF would seem to reboot the issues of the Aminu/Harkless era. One of the starting forwards needs to be better than just a role-player
