How do you find out BRoy's PER for tonight!!!!!!!!

I don't think steals figure into PER. Not much defensively does.

ESPN.com has the top PER for the night in gamecast. Go to the scoreboard when you're in the window and it's right there.

Formula for PER: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_Efficiency_Rating

You're right, I don't see blocks or steals mentioned. I don't really want to take the time to figure out and apply the formula. But if I get drunk later and don't have a girl around I might figure it out.

Heh... that's because you didn't scroll far enough to the right. Blocks and steals are in there as BLK and STL, I promise. I can also just about guarantee that you will NOT want to take the time to plug numbers into that formula -- it's that nasty.

HCP...I might be going to a game in the near future...I know you can get your boy some facetime on the Jumbotron! I'll dance in my seat for ya'!

Just let me know man Ro! Thanks, but we were trying to pass along to the Mike's his PER for tonights game and i had no idea of how to figure it out!

What was his PER? last time I saw it was around 42.

Okay, well I'm back from the bars, slightly buzzed. No girl :-(

You're right I didn't scroll all the way to the right to see the full PER formula. My bad. On the flip side, it turns out I made some pretty useful friends tonight. Club promoters and the like. I'm not going to try right now...Good night.

That's all...there's no point to this post.

I don't know what Roy's PER was last night, but I suspect it's not all that impressive compared to other games he's had this season. He had "only" 22 points and shot 7-18 FG. He's had much better all around games than that this season. The only anomaly was the 10 steals, but that is canceled out by his unspectacular scoring and shooting.

I don't know of any site that lists PER on a game-by-game basis. If you've seen the formula, you know why. For single games, it's much easier to calculate EFF. All you need is a boxscore and you can do the math in our head.

Brandon's EFF for last night's game was 27. Not bad, but not spectacular. Caron Butler, in spite of 9 TO, actually had a higher EFF in last night's game (31) than Roy. Oden's EFF was 26. For the season, Roy's top EFF games are:

49 on 12/18 (the 52-point game against Phoenix)
37 on 12/12
35 on 12/17
34 on 12/16

He has several more in the 29 - 30 range, but those are his best 4 - three of them were in consecutive games leading up to the 52-point game against Phoenix. During that time, he had a five game streak of EFF = 30, 29, 37, 34, 35, 49 from December 9 - 18.

PER is a bear to figure because it's based on OTHER values that are nearly constantly shifting (VOP, League Pace, Team Pace, League FT makes per foul, etc.).

He introduced Game Scores in his 2003-04 Basketball Prospectus, which is aimed at judging a single game at a glance.

Points scored
+ .4*FGM
- .7*FGA
- .4*FT Missed
+ .7*OReb
+ .3*DReb
+ Steals
+ .7*Assists
+ .7*Blocks
- .4*PF
- TO

Plugging in numbers from last night, Roy finished with 27 (categorized by Hollinger as "Probable Player of the Game", a step down from "Probably the best performance in the league that night" and a step up from "A very strong effort", which is where Oden was at 19.5.

50+: An historic performance
40-49.9: One of the best games of the entire season
30-39.9: Probably the best performance in the league that night
20-29.9: Probable Player of the Game selection
15-19.9: A very strong effort
12-14.9: Reasonably solid performance
8-11.9: Average
5-7.9: Subpar game of didn't see many minutes

This is a similar good minus bad calculation to EFF - only with weighting factors for specific stats he considers more/less important. It's just a coincidence that both Roy's EFF and and Game Score worked out to 27 last night. Here's the EFF and Game Scores for Roy's top four games this season:

12/18 EFF = 49 Game Score = 43.7
12/12 EFF = 37 Game Score = 31.3
12/27 EFF = 35 Game Score = 29.2
12/16 EFF = 34 Game Score = 29.4

So, according to the Games Scores metric, Roy's 52-point game was likely "One of the best games of the entire season" and he's had three others that are borderline (slightly above or slightly below) "Probably the best performance in the league that night".

Roy's game tonight:

1/26 EFF = 34 Game Score = 29.9

Puts it in the top five games he's had this season.
