He's short on cash:

Ex-Trail Blazers star center Arvydas Sabonis has been dealing with financial struggles of late as one of the owners of Lithuanian champion B.C. Zalgiris Kaunas. According to Eurobasket.com, Zalgiris's players recently boycotted a game because of unpaid wages. The players have asked for at least part of those wages before they play again. The website reported that Zalgiris's future doesn't look good because it can't find investors, has debts up to $6 million Euros, and there are rumors that league rival Lietuvos Rytas is trying to acquire some of its players.

That gives me an idea: in England there's a "minor league" team, whose name I forget, that was bought by thousands of people online (each contributing minor sums to buy shares). We could do that for Zalgiris!

I don't have much money but I will donate my trust-fund of about 10,000 shekels. Of course, I'm hoping I'm the only one who says yes because I need the money but even if there are more people willing to chip-in, someone would have to get in contact with the fans of the team in Lithuania, they should be the main contributors.

Yah, Im going to spend my own money to save a guy who has been paid millions of dollars to play a sport, because apparently his wife drank him in debt.

Yeah, But it's your favorite basketball player of all time. and 10000 shekels are something like 2000$, and you become a part-owner of the team.

I have to abort my offer. I've discussed it with my father and since it's the money my grand-father (his father) left me, he sorta has the power to block any attempt to use it on what he thinks is a pipe-dream.
I still think it's a good idea, to invest in a basketball team right now. I think if it's really an option, and the owners would like to sell some %s to the fans it'll probably be for much less than it's actual worth because of the current crisis.
But, my own my money is only 2000 shekels right now and I need it to live. When I'll be able to save enough to make a contribution, it'll probably not be needed anymore but if it is, I'll re-consider.

Actually Sabas has spent the bulk of his money organizing, teaching and supporting youth basketball in his home country.

He is probably the #1 reason the game has grown so fast in Europe.

Maybe Stern should help out a bit?:dunno:
