NJ in: Andre Miller, Hughes, Marshall, Lowry, 1st rd pick

Cle out: Hughes, Marshall, Jones, Newble, 1st rd pick
Cle in: Kidd, Wright, Cardinal

Phi out: Andre Miller, 1st rd pick
Phi in: Mike Miller, Marcus Williams

Mem out: Mike Miller, Kyle Lowry, Cardinal
Mem in: Magloire, Allen, Jones, Newble, 1st rd pick

I know the Nets take on the Hughes contract, but the team would be very deep and could make a decent run. Fullfills Thorn's wish to not totally blow it up. Also gives the Nets defensive minded players that can score in Miller and Hughes, and a potential pg for the future in Lowry (who they are reportedly interested in). Cleveland gets Kidd and keeps their core, but they have to take on Cardinal's deal. Philly gets M. Miller for A. Miller and Stefanski's draft choice of Marcus to be his future pg. Memphis gets rid of Miller's and Cardinal's deals, but get a smaller and shorter Damon Jones deal. I rather have Mike Miller than Hughes, but Philly wouldn't take Hughes.

Nets lineup:

Miller/Lowry/Armstrong
Carter/Hughes
Jefferson/Nachbar
Krstic/Marshall
Boone/Williams/Swift

Nets downgrade from Kidd to Miller at point, but take a huge upgrade in Hughes over Wright (when Hughes is healthy). Marshall is also an upgrade over Allen. Teams deep. That 2nd unit is pretty damn good.

Is that because of Hughes? His deal is one year longer than Kidds. Could be used in a trade or s&t that summer since he'll be expiring. His $13mm will be more moveable than Kidd's $20mm.

I don't think Kidd's deal will run out. If he doesn't get traded in the next 8 days he will be traded this summer (unless a miracle happens and the get to the Finals). Will the Nets get back another expiring or a quality player in a S&T?

Seems like every big player that moved teams was acquired in a trade or S&T. Garnett: trade. Marion: trade. Lewis: S&T. Shaq: trade. Gasol: trade. Jamison: trade. Butler: trade. Richardson: trade. Carter: trade. Baron Davis: trade. Stephen Jackson: trade. Harrington: trade. Randolph: trade. Curry: S&T. etc... Most high quality players are acquired by draft or trade with free agency good for finishing off the roster. Because most teams that are under the cap don't have enough talent to attract high quality free agents. There are always exceptions to the rule like Portland and Cleveland a few years back, but that's because they had high quality players that proved themselves early on rookie deals. Just doesn't always happen that way.

Where is the carrot for the fans in this trade?

Hughes would be a bench player on this team, and if healthy for a year and a half (which the guy could be due) could be traded summer of 2009 as an expiring. 10x better than Wright. What's wrong with Miller? Lowry eventually takes his place.

This summer you would have Miller entering the last year of an expiring deal and useful in trades. Same goes for Hughes the following summer. Splitting Kidd's salary into 2 pieces. Plus you get a 1st rounder.

I thought you thought Rod was asking for too much? Here Rod keeps his team competitive while getting pieces (draft pick, young pg, and 2 smaller deals) he can use in the future.

Never thought it was ideal, but what scenario out there is? There are no homeruns on this one.

Sorry, with the weather we have had the past two days, my schedule has been screwy and I haven't had time to play with trade checker.

Here are the problems I see:

1) Even getting past how much I despise Andre Miller, if there were good trades available for him, Ed would have already dumped him. So it comes down to you waiting for him to be an expiring contract. Problem is, he'll want to play and take away time from someone like Lowry.

2) Hughes is in the top 5 of the worst contracts in the NBA right now. There is no reason to take on that albatross and get so little back in the deal. He gives no immediate savings and you have to spend a roster spot on another wing to play all of the games Hughes will miss.

3) I strongly disagree that this keeps the team competitive. However, it does keep them winning just enough games to be only 8th or 9th worst in the NBA which sucks from a lottery perspective.

I've heard him talked about for a lot of teams and they say Ed keeps shoot the deals down. From Miami, to Dallas, Denver, and Cleveland.

Cpaw, do you think the reported Harris, Stack, and filler deal is better?

Stack deal is just as long as Hughes, although $5mm less a year, but if we buy him out he still eats up our cap and doesn't play.

You seem to like Lowry better than Harris.

The Dallas deal gives us no cap relief since Stack won't be tradeable if bought out and Harris signed an extension.

Cleveland or Philly pick will be better than Dallas' pick.

Well, the biggest thing I like out of it is that Harris has good trade value and the Nets could easily flip him for more pieces.
