Last year was painful & we all thought, "well you can only go up from here". And when the Yankees spent over 400M during the off season many of us (including myself) thought, "at least 90 wins & the division". BOY!....were we off.

2013 (62 games = 36-26)
2014 (62 games = 31-31)

2013 (62 games = Runs for 252, Runs against 236)
2014 (62 games = Runs for 249, Runs against 280)

2013 (62 games = 19-13 at home)
2014 (62 games = 13-16 at home)

Rick,
Nothing will get better till Cashman is fired and competent people who know how to acquire and develop young talent are brought in. Otherwise you get what you get Overpriced out of their prime former stars and projects and cuts by other teams masquerading as the NY Yankees

I'm not trying to defend Cashman entirely...

BUT...

McCann was the best option on the market... I can't blame Cashman for McCann not adjusting yet to the AL East...
Ellsbury seems to be doing well so far... not fantastic, but good enough...
Tanaka is FANfrickenTASTIC!
Solarte so far is fantastic!
Roberts has been subpar, but after losing Cano, who else was really out there?
Ryan (see above)
Kuroda is doing about what I expected.... but again, who else was out there?
Beltran has without a doubt been a HUGE disappointment... I, for one, never wanted him...

So, as I see it, Beltran is really the one Cashman failure from this past off-season

From previous years:
Not surprised CC or Tex couldn't stay healthy...
I never wanted Youkilis on the team last year for precisely the reason he didn't play much...

Tough shoes to follow Mariano...

Again, Cashman is far from perfect, but ultimately, they all looked pretty good on paper and it's the players failing to live up to their contracts...

So, if Cashman is out, who comes in? Billy Beane turned down MONSTER money years ago from Boston... I doubt he'd come... who else is there?

Hell I'll take it, as Ron said, for peanuts, or they can have their peanuts, I'd do it for FREE....!!! (also)...

I too never cared for the over hyped Beltran, watching him this year, to me is painful. He's not the Beltran of old, and I still don't like him. He looks like he should of been tendered much less money, for the talent he no longer or never had.....

Youk-I too didn't want to see him neither....besides, I could not get over his grip of his bat, LL 101: hold your bat proper, reduce the travel of the bat thru the strike zone, never hold the damn thing over your head, with the barrel tilted towards the pitcher.....(some say if they're hitting regardless of how they hold the bat, even if they put the damn thing in their pocket in the batter box....I've always disagreed. A player who can hit with a unsound fundamental batting approach, can only hit even better if their fundamentals and mechanics are fixed.....Youk needed more than a tune-up, he needed a full rebuild.

I can't see anyone who will ever best Mo's Saves Record, not even a LL'er on the far horizon. Like DiMaggio's Consecutive Hits Record, some say will never be broken, same with Mo'....what a treat it was the last 20 years to see Mo' do his magic as long and consistent, unlike any reliever to play the game.

Bottom line well pointed out Rick....no team can win as long as they give up more runs than they themselves produce...! good stuff, thanx...!
 
I've read many comments since Beltran came back off of the DL about how badly the Yankees need him in the lineup. My theory is that the other members of the team cannot step up to fill a void of one man missing you've got some huge problems. Tanaka, Murphy, and Solarte, all pretty much MLB rookies are outperforming their million dollar counterparts but add that old guy Ichiro into the mix of team good guys.
 
You simply cannot win with an offense performing disgustingly bad. I mean just look at what you have in this lineup right now . Derek Jeter in the two hole batting .254. Brian Roberts .239, Teixeira .238, Soriano .229, McCann .225, Beltran .218 and Johnson .216. Are you fucking kidding me with this shit?

I could be mistaken (and its seldom that I am) but those numbers look like the Casey Stengal Mets.
 
It's late 80s Yankees bad. McCann is reminding me of Matt Nokes and Bob Guerin. Nokes actually had a pretty good year or two so perhaps Don Slaught is a better reference.

Hammer, I'd go get the current person running the cardinals or tampa bay farm systems and make them the yankee GM.
 
You have a team loaded with 30+ year old players none of which fit the bill of a slugger. This team is currently on pace to hit a total of 133 homers. Last years team which we now had power issues hit 144. That's how dreadful this lineup has been.
