A Hertz spokesman says the rental car company is disappointed that 26 Muslim transport drivers at Sea-Tac Airport chose to be fired rather than agree to clock out for prayer breaks.

Spokesman Richard Broome says eight other drivers who had been suspended Sept. 30 were reinstated after they agreed to time their prayers.

Broome says clocking out is a reasonable requirement because some employees had failed to return to work promptly after prayers. The drivers move rental cars for cleaning and refueling.

Teamsters Local 117 has filed an unfair labor practices complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. The union also is filing religious discrimination charges with the EEOC.

The union represents nearly 80 Hertz drivers who earn between $9.15 and $9.95 an hour. About 70 percent are Muslims.

They shouldn't get extra treatment for praying. What about a catholic person stating, "Well I need to read my bible, etc" so I shouldn't have to clock out? Then everyone of different religious believes would then start wanting their special treatments.

The muslims shouldn't get any extra treatment and should use their praying as a normal break and be clocked out.

As a former union rep as well as someone who has argued against unions from the other side, there is no way Hertz will get away with this.......No matter how right they are. It should be a pretty easy victory for the union, and all those drivers will end up with every red cent they missed due to these firings. Basically Hertz just gave those drivers a paid vacation.

I wonder if they also kept parking the cars so they faced Mecca?

I'm a little confused. Are these during the morning break and afternoon break you get and are paid for? Or is this adding extra breaks to that?

I'm assuming it's more on top of those because every employer is required to give two 15ers while on the clock.

Seems like there's a class action suit possible for EOO violations. Clearly there is some religious preference at play in Hertz's hiring practices, favoring muslims over all other applicants strictly due to the fact they are muslims.

How do you figure?

What percentage of applicants are Muslim? What is the turnover rate like for Muslims and non-Muslims?

Your analysis is weak. :)

yeah. Thats why I was wondering. If they were trying to make them clock out for those and not allow it then if "on the clock"

You might want to take a look at the professional driving community. What ethnicity is your taxi driver? When I worked at the airport as a kid in the ground transportation area, the taxi drivers, shuttle drivers, and town car drivers were mostly of African, Middle Eastern, and Russian decent. Only Radio Cab had a majority of cranky old white guys, and that's because they hire a lot of veterans.

I am absolutely certain that Seattle muslims account for less than 1% of all applicants for such a cushy job requiring no skills and very little effort. And yet 70% of the positions were filled by muslims. The rate of illegal discrimination required to achieve such an astounding imbalance is astronomical.

What percentage of unemployed Seattle-ites are muslim? Largest estimate I can find is muslims MAY make up almost 4/10th of 1 percent of Seattle area residents.

What percentage of non-muslim unemployed Seattle-ites would pass up one of the easiest jobs in the world if they were offered?

Your rebuttal is weaker.

So you think it's okay to discriminate as long as it's nation-wide discrimination?

Or...... it's a career that is mostly populated by Muslims. No discrimination involved. If you would like to go drive a cab or a town car for a living I'm sure they would LOVE to have you.

Are you really that naive?
