Do you smoke at work?

Seems to me that cigarette smokers take 2 to 3 times more "breaks" than their non-smoking working counterparts. Why is that? Is there some type of entitlement in place?

Oh, and after you've gone out to the designated smoking area and tugged on your cig for 12 minutes or so......upon your return to the office or work area, could you at least chew some gum or have a mint handy before engaging in a close discussion with someone? That second-hand "aftertaste" is naaaaasty.

Thanks

I actually don't smoke. only when i drink. i know people smoke at work, its kind of wack. the gum smell makes it worse IMO. drink a fucking scotch!

i tried only smoking when i was drinking, then i found myself drinking every morning

I have often wondered the same thing about smokers at work.

You damn liberals trying to micromanage everyone else's life!

Somehow we need to tie this thread about smoke breaks together with the one about the Hertz employee's prayer breaks.

Muslim smokers worse than cows: Malaysia cleric

Malaysia's top Muslim cleric slams at smokers
Muslim smokers worse than cows: Malaysia cleric

KUALA LUMPUR (AlArabiya, Reuters)

Muslims who smoke and try to portray themselves as religious are worse than cows that defecate in the street, a top Malaysian Muslim cleric and politician said on Friday, pointing out that smoking was banned in Islam because the habit was hazardous to health.

"For example, a cow which defecates in the middle of the road, (we) cannot take legal action against it because it has no brain and cannot think," said Nik Aziz who is the spiritual leader of the country's Pan-Islamic Party (PAS).

" But human beings, who have brains, for them to do something which is wrong in religion ... can be regarded as being more despicable than cows "
Nik Aziz

"But human beings, who have brains, for them to do something which is wrong in religion ... when they are in an attire which symbolizes Islam [hijab or skull cap], they can be regarded as being more despicable than cows," he said in his weekly religious speech, according to Malaysia's state news agency Bernama.

Recently, Indonesia's top Islamic body passed a fatwa or ruling banning smoking. Malaysia's top Islamic body has also banned smoking.

Despite the ban in Malaysia, where over half the population of 27 million is Muslim, 50 percent of the male population smokes according to World Health Organization (WHO) data.

PAS is one of the three parties in Malaysia's opposition alliance led by former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.

I was driving down Powell yesterday afternoon around 5 PM and saw a man taking a leak on a hedge....standing on the sidewalk.....right out in the open.....in broad daylight.

Keeping Portland weird.

I could only laugh. ;)

Yep, I smoke at work. After each "break" I wash my hands and face and chew a new piece of gum. Not for other people, but for me. I will continue to smoke at work, because I fucking like it.

I can't prove this, but I think it's partly because of smokers that health insurance premiums (via employer health plans) are higher than they should be.

Work closely with a co-worker who smokes. He's pretty good about the mints post cancer stick. It's much appreciated.

Partly, but a more compelling arguement could be made against fast food eaters, alcoholics, and people in dangerous or stressful occupations such as fire/police/military/logging/mining/construction and people who ride motorcycles or drive hybrids.

Seems to me fat people take longer lunches and more snack breaks. Do they think they are entitled to take more time to eat?

Seems to me lazy people work slower than other workers. Do they think they are entitled to work less because they are lazy?

Seems to me nerds spend more time on the computer surfing and posting than working. Do they think they entitled to surf more than other workers?

Seems to me that woman . . . I better stop before I piss off the whole board.

My point is you're confused about your own political view.

You should love and support Obama/Pelosi/Reid and company.

Yeah, uh huh.

You're on the right track....

My guess is, diseases/claims related to smoking, cost the health insurance companies more dollars, overall.

Obesity is the most expensive health problem in America.

As for smelly co-workers I worked in a factory when I was young and a guy there always carried a paper bag of garlic to munch on all day and microwaved pig's brains in the lunchroom.

He didn't smoke, btw.
