Unless you know of some viable candidate that has not come forward yet.

With no Dems at all opposing, and no Reps who can be seriously considered as a sane option, looks like it will be a landslide victory.

that's the talking point, but exactly what's wrong with a guy like Mitt Romney, who is the likely candidate?

How you feel about that? Doesn't seem Obama has really proved anything. I was really hoping Hilary would take another crack at it. I hate to say it, but I think she would make a good president. Hell she was running the country for 8 years when Bill was. ;)

well, its not so much Obama really proved anything rather than being a monumental failure.

Obama certainly did prove something. He proved to be true what many of us expected... he has spent like crazy and ran up our debt and deficits, and has played the class warfare game. He's been a complete failure.

He hasn't been a complete failure. Not by any stretch.

He's just been one of the least competent men to hold the job, and tick tick, the more time he gets, the longer it will take for the economy to improve.

Like, 1.x% GDP growth isn't complete failure, but 2.5 or better is a reasonable and achievable result.

Huntsman is the only viable moderate in the republican race. Romney is a hedgefund banker and plays off his "down to earth" and "i love america" BS.

As a proud conservative, I am pissed that we don't really have THAT guy....or girl, to take down Obama. I really can't stand the thought of his incompetence for another 4 years. Hopefully Romney lands a stud VP candidate so the idiots who vote based on VP candidates will give him a serious look

Never realized how Republican dominated this OT forum is. I do live in Portland, right? Right?

the thing is, if Obama was doing well, more democrats would probably be up in the spot giving him props, but he sucks, they're over it and are embarassed about how right we were about him not being ready.

I think Obama's doing a good job. I just don't have the desire to bash out political arguments on a message board.

Where else do you have the desire to bash out political arguments? The argument about never bringing up politics or religion tends to be a reality when we are talking about people away from the internet. Fact is, most people don't know shit about either religion or politics, but they no doubt have opinions that they keep to themselves for fear of exposure. They just don't want to talk about it because its uncomfortable to talk about politics when they are on the precipice of being exposed. So where do you talk about it, if not for here?

Ideally? Never. Never ever ever. Politics are a one-person relationship between you the voter and reality. Because they are also based on philosophical beliefs, arguing about them won't change your beliefs, only make you cling to them more strongly.

I believe religion is the same way. Your relationship with God/whoever. Arguing about it just leads to hurt feelings/bombings.

Fuck that noise. I have trouble talking politics with my wife, even though we believe the same things *in general*. There's just way too man nuances to express, too many bits of anecdotal experience formed over decades to get out before the person you're talking with has the context to even know where you're coming from... and that's before the conversation can begin! If you're sitting across the internet table from some yahoo who wants to point talking points all day, you'll never get anywhere.

Fuck talking politics and religion. Shit's private, yo.

Not the first time I was lied to by a politician. His promise to NOT require mandatory health insurance was the single reason I voted him over Clinton. I expect she will run in 2016.

With family and friends. I never really get that heated, either. Politics are a mess anyway, this country needs more than a 2 party system. Doesn't matter who the President is, nothing will get done anymore because politicians care more about saving face these days than whats best for the country.

I think given the cards that Obama was dealt, he has done an admirable job. That of course with a senate that is close-minded and won't allow Obama to get shit done.

I don't feel that getting into political arguments on the internet is a fulfilling exercise. I understand a lot of people love it, I don't get it.

Obama could have been the best President in the world and waved a magic wand and the economy could be back on track and Republican's would still think that he's the shittiest President ever.

Thats why I don't discuss politics. Narrow, narrow-minded individuals.

But Obama hasn't been the best president in the world, the economy isn't back on track, etc. It's actually gotten better since there's been gridlock, which speaks of the policies Obama pursued and won with Democrats controlling the house and senate.

The thing is, I think Clinton was an outstanding president. So I guess I'm narrow minded.

This message board says it all. Obama is toast.

All this publicity coming from Republican primaries and caucuses shows that most Americans are Republicans.

It's time to return to one of those competent Republican presidents. Can't wait to watch the deficit turn around, abortion become illegal, and unemployment go down. As Reagan proclaimed, America is back!

I'll donate money to the cause by betting anyone money. You can take the Republican and I'll take the Democrat. Think of it as my contribution.

I used to be a registered Democrat. The Party has gone off the rails.

How was he a great president if he didn't lead with a philosophy that lasted? My telling is that he was not a great president, rather, he subdued any virtue that he had power to embolden.

My telling is that government is sooooo large that it's rare that you'll find a guy who ran it as well as Clinton did. And while there was partisanship on both side, especially the Newt led House, he was able to set a realistic and widely popular agenda and got most of it done.

Everybody prospered, so it seems.

Obama hasn't led on much of anything. He said he wanted universal health care, but made no proposal in Bill form to congress. Instead, it was Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi who wrote the bill, bartering away whatever it took to get votes for it. It was never popular, and in the end, it took a parliamentary gimmick to pass it.

Normally, a president has a chief of staff and other staff who lobby congress, count votes, barter for votes, etc. For Bills written by the West Wing.

If you feel this critique is unfair, do tell.

I did think Obama was quite inspirational at the time he was elected, and I hoped he might push for policies popular to most people. Sadly, I don't see much he's done that fits this description. Getting Bin Laden was good, but expanding the war in Afghanistan and bombing civilians in a neighboring country seems a lot like Nixon and his bombing of Laos and Cambodia.

I'll accept that you were a dem once, if you admit that on its way off the tracks, it ran into the republican party...who is also off the tracks

I'm sure he really cares if you "accept" that he was once a dem.
