How was he a great president if he didn't lead with a philosophy that lasted?

(facepalm)
You judge a president by whether his policies SHOULD have lasted, not whether they DID. The next president determined whether they DID. You blame the NEXT president for that, not the guy who did what was right, and had us on track to have the deficit completely paid off by now.

Which brings up the question, how if he was so great did W follow him as president? If Clinton was so great how on earth could the people look to W for a change?

Algore.

Politics are a one-person relationship between you the voter and reality. Because they are also based on philosophical beliefs, arguing about them won't change your beliefs, only make you cling to them more strongly.
Not necessarily. Take a look at "The Secret Knowledge," by David Mamet. A lifelong liberal, he recently saw the light and switched sides. Sometimes being exposed to arguments over time will finally change your mind.

I get that Al Gore was the only other option, but surely if Clinton hadn't soiled himself, Gore would've won running away. And I guarantee this world would be a much better place had Clinton actually extended a legacy.

People thought GHW Bush would extend Reagan's legacy, but he didn't. Both he and Gore had stellar resumes, too.

I used to be a registered Democrat. The Party has gone off the rails.

Riiiiiight......You've always claimed to be independent, when in reality you're as conservative as they come.

I like to think of myself as a "Liberal Republican" if there is such a thing.

I'm a whole foods republican.

well, except for the bolded part..hah.

What's needed is a full-fledged effort to cultivate "Whole Foods Republicans"—independent-minded voters who embrace a progressive lifestyle but not progressive politics. These highly-educated individuals appreciate diversity and would never tell racist or homophobic jokes; they like living in walkable urban environments; they believe in environmental stewardship, community service and a spirit of inclusion. And yes, many shop at Whole Foods, which has become a symbol of progressive affluence but is also a good example of the free enterprise system at work. (Not to mention that its founder is a well-known libertarian who took to these pages to excoriate ObamaCare as inimical to market principles.)

You hate it when people don't fit neatly into your pred-defined box of what a Republican is or was.

i can't say that I haven't done those things. i dig the prepared foods there, i rarely cook so its pretty dope.

No, I hate it when people try and play pop-psychology about me having some kind of pred-defined box of what a Republican is.

The guy talks shit on a regular basis about all things democrat and talks up Republican propaganda, yet claims to be an Independent.

Is it that risque to admit you're a Republican these days?

I voted for Reagan in 1984; the only republican I ever voted for.

I handed out posters, bumper stickers, badges, and propaganda for McGovern and then Carter. I was a young fool then, but now I'm older and wiser.

Why don't you enlighten us with your definition of a Republican?

Someone who's ideals lean towards Republican stances. Generally someone who votes Republican. I don't paint with a broad brush like you probably do.

No wonder our country is screwed. This level of intelligence is allowed to vote.

Our country has been in decline since GW.

That was the same piss poor excuse democrats made when carter fucked up the country in the late 70's. But our president after was able to rebuild our economy. You would expect Obama could easily turn things around with a majority house and senate backing him. I mean that is the major concern of democrats? Less government spending, pulling out our troops in Iraq and healthcare reform?

What? Are you going to blame the recession that went full tilt under GW's watch on Clinton?

Nope Clinton did an awesome job turning the economy around. Obama had a great opportunity to follow suit but failed miserably.
