It takes 5 seconds to manually open a garage door. Do everything she says and then once you're ready, learn how to open it from inside....if you can't do it park outside.

If you can, you'll see how easy it is and then back your car in so it's ready to go out head first.

I'd feel much better knowing all of my documents and cash and supplies aren't sitting in the driveway all night.

Someone who wants out might even just steal your gas while you sleep. You never know.
 
Most important: if you have companion animal, be sure leash/carrier/cage is close at hand.
 
I'm all ready to evacuate but I seem to be in a safety bubble. But my car is packed and I can leave in a moments notice. I know a couple people who have lost homes and one of them is missing a mother who's house also burned two doors down from theirs. That was several days ago so she's either in the hospital or dead, otherwise there's been plenty of time to get in touch. But that was down at the tubbs fire almost 20 miles from me.

Don't forget if the fire gets too close you can use your guns to lay down some cover fire.

I'm working a new job so I don't want to leave them hanging when I haven't been evacuated when half the employees actually have been evacuated and can get to work.

Also, I'm safe for the time being and I am quite vigilant about remaining safe. There are usually recommended evacuations before the mandatory one. I plan to leave the moment the recommended evac comes down.

My wife and I just got back yesterday afternoon from 9 days in Cali. Went to Fresno (gag) to see her relatives and then swung over through the Napa Valley to 101. We were aware that fires were happening somewhere but were generally oblivious overall.....which was probably a good thing. We saw the fires to the southwest of Napa on our way in and the winds were really starting to play havoc with it, but we spent Sunday afternoon wandering downtown Napa and no one but no one seemed concerned. We passed through Calistoga and then spent the night in Cloverdale. That’s when things got real. By 3 am Monday morning our room smelled like a camp fire and by the time we visited the local coffee shop, people were starting to seriously freak out. We hit 101 quickly after being told we could probably get through if we hustled. Fat chance.

North of Ukiah, 101 was closed indefinitely (with flaming hillsides alarmingly close by) and we were told if we wanted to keep going North we had to backtrack and detour through Anderson Valley and over to Hwy 1 south of Mendocino and then hook back to 101 at Leggett. Just what my carsick prone wife wanted to hear. So we backtracked and were glad we did (carsickness aside). 101 didn’t open until sometime the next day (And Mendocino proved to be an enjoyable visit). To make matters worse, the Eureka area had a massive AT&T outage (for whatever reason) and that, along with all the cell towers that were consumed by the fire had our family and friends freaking out big time when our phones kept going immediately to voice mail. Our phones were literally blowing up by the time we got to Crescent City. We felt very loved.......Interesting couple of days and proof that ignorance really CAN be bliss sometimes. As they say, God looks out for fools and little children.........

As UCD says, yeah, family was freaking out. My former co-worker was hanging in her backyard Sunday evening til almost 11pm. When the wind really whipped up, they went inside because they have a massive tree in their backyard and were worried, at that point, about branches falling down. Fire was of little concern - they could see some smaller fires in the hillside a few miles away. Less than 3 hours later, they were told to leave immediately and the fire was on their neighborhood's doorstep. Another 5-6 hours later, they had confirmation their house was down to the foundation. Other good friends have been evacuated in this process as well (some went all the way to Sacramento to stay, which might actually be worse than losing one's house).

Needless to say, knowing where my parents were and how quickly the fire was moving, I was a wreck since the phones were going straight to VM and I was hearing reports of folks trapped on the 101 having to abandon their cars and being lifted out by helicopter. As dad says, they were oblivious to it all, and I fully knew this. So that freaked me the fuck out.

I've been told my worries were unfounded, but those of you that have met UCD knows he needs my guidance in navigating this world. I admit was I so stressed I was near tears. Even once they finally had the ability to communicate again (several hours after last communication), I was freaked until they showed up in my driveway two days later for a brief hello.

Glad the folks are okay. But they clearly don't give a rip about my concerns for their well-being.

Glad they are fine. Its worse to be in your situation. I know exactly what I'm up against, and it is crazy but I have full control of what I do and how I handle these fires. My fiancee is still in Walla Walla and she has to deal with my phone going out and not being able to contact me for hours at a time while reading tales of death and destruction. I feel bad for her. I've put a few things in place to make sure she doesn't freak out, like sending her itineraries of exactly where I will be so she can follow the news reports and alerts and understand that i'm fine. I also had her text my zip code to 888777 so that she is updated with every new report the Sonoma County Sheriffs office puts out about these fires.

Do you want me to drive up to Walla Walla and comfort her? Dogs can be very comforting.
 
I was in Berkeley yesterday and air was awful, a lot of people wearing masks. Oddly, it's OK where I live but I work in South Hayward & it's getting worse. Hell of a headache from driving here. I can't even imagine what it's like closer.

Well, I thought everything was improving but there was just a mandatory evacuation for gyserville, 7 miles from me. Guess I'm not out of the woods yet.

Several stories have done the same for me. The dude, wealthy as he is, that had a massive house and land, and chose to save his wildlife safari over his house, still makes me choked up as I type this. He did what he really should have done, but how many folks wouldn't have? He owned his responsibility to rare animals he had.
