He is the righteous god figure of basketball, according to him.thODGLDEYG.jpg

His statement is true. I've never seen a referee change a foul call.

These are around the NBA topics....nothing to do with the Blazers....that's why we have those threads..it's more of a post than a thread ...just sayin'

I think Popovich realizes that coaches dressing down referees is a kind of like a bit of ritualistic theater: It creates the impression that he has his players' backs, it might wear down a referee over the course of a game, either subconsciously getting them to swallow his whistle or start seeing the things the coach is complaining about.

I disagree with Pop....coaches can get make up calls from complaining from time to time

I've seen many a make up call happen. Course if the refs got seriously tuff on all the fouling that goes on UN-CALLED and started getting tight, half the players would be fouled out by the start of the 4th quarter

You ever ref a game? There's literally no such thing as a make up call.

That's just a thing that's been invented by fans who believe in conspiracy theory.

Not a foul. Maybe out of bounds but not a foul.

You've seen a ref blow their whistle, call foul, and then say:

"Never mind that's not a foul"?
Hey dviss. How are things going? Still reffing high school games? Have you reffed a game at the new Franklin High school gym yet and if so what do you think of it?

Hey there CUP!!! HOW ARE YOU? It's good to hear from you brother. Glad you made the migration.

I am still refereeing High School. I have not had any games at the new gym. I heard it's just ok though.

How are the grandchildren?

I haven't been in the gym either but it's pretty eye-catching from the outside as I pass by it almost every day. The grandkids are great and the newest, my 3 year old grandson has been a blast. My oldest is a sophomore in college (scary thought) but he had to pretty much give up sports after 2 knee surgeries and a shoulder surgery.

sure there is....happens all the time...didn't say you would do that but Donaghy and Scott Foster did it all the time

No, I have seen a ref call a foul on the opponent and change his mind and say it was on the Blazers....a charge into a blocking foul

I have seen a player from the opposite team call a phantom out of bound on the Blazers, in the playoffs

I disagree. I have 100% seen makeup calls in the NBA.

You guys only call them make up calls because you're looking through the lens of fan which we all know is short for fanatic.

It's a jaded viewpoint.

@dviss, it's also from the refereeing perspective.

For instance, I know (because I've asked) college refs will "let things go" to get games over quicker, and not call calls that normally would be game stoppages. If there's a spectrum of "yeah, that'd normally be a foul for moving screen, but whatever, they're down 30", doesn't it make sense that "man, that normally would just be a no-call, but since Bobby just jacked up that last traveling call (or whatever) I'll call this one" is also in the spectrum? Hell, Donaghy laid out exactly how he did it (which I know is a corner case, but shows how it can be done.

Yes, a fans perspective is jaded... but so is yours.

As Brian laid out, there are lots of grey area. I think most refs want to do a good job, so if they know they completely jacked up a call - they look for an opportunity to make it up to the team that got screwed.

Portland has been the beneficiary of that many times. I remember 5-6 different times this season where Portland (mostly Dame) has recieved a makeup call

It wasn't always just fans. In 1970s national telecasts, commentators routinely pronounced "Makeup call" 3 or 4 times per game. (First, the colorman had questioned the original call.) When Stern took over, that was one of the many freedoms he stifled.

Only that it's not. I've been on every side of the whistle. Player, coach, referee, spectator. IMO we should all do that to fully understand stuff.

Saying you remember that it's a makeup call doesn't mean it was. It just means you thought it was.

The thing that drove me nuts in the NBA for years was the palming of the ball. Im glad ref's are calling it more now.
One of the first rules of the game you teach youngsters is don't carry the ball.
Iverson & Payton did it all the time...

No, but we HAVE seen a certain referee MAKE a call based on what the players on the court said, and if I remember right that call favored the Spurs of all teams....and it was of coarse, against the Blazers....
