In my school, in order to graduate you have to write a 15-page "senior thesis" paper on anything. So I chose to do it on hip-hop. But my teacher suggested within that topic of hip-hop, I should do "beef" and how it affects society.

Do any of you guys have any ideas/suggestions?

I'm not sure if its what you're thinking about, but in Grade 12 I did a paper on the tension between the business and the artistic/creative aspects of hip hop music.

I think a better topic would be the decline of hip-hop as it hit the mainstream. Hip Hop has lost it's soul.

Most of the topics on "Beef" have been covered in those videos.

the don imus one snoop dogg took real offense to, he said that when they talk about ho's they mean like chicks who are just there and aren't do anything with their lives, but when u say that abouta female getting a higher education then theres somethnig wrong, it was real interesting..

anyways to your topic, if u can try to weight in is there more negative or postivite influence within hip-hop, you can use how they rap about drugs and stuff and get teens to do it, then you got others who try to sway away from that and even fi they do they do possitive things to make up

i'm sorry but snoop has no credibility in this area at all are you kidding me? great performer? yes. expert on politically correct speech? uh, i think Not.

p.s. Mr. J, the paper could be on anything and you chose hip-hop? not to criticize, but there are other things in life besides hip-hop. I didn't used to read much, but when I started reading more, I realized I was interested in all this other stuff (that I didn't realize I was interested in...)

You can write about how "beefs" tend to be more calculated and aimed towards creating a reputation these days. Contrast the genuine hatred and rivalry in previous feuds (ie: Biggie-Pac, Kool Moe-LL, Nas-Jay-Z) with the modern ones that tend to be more manufactured (ie: Benzino-Eminem, 50 Cent vs. everybody (mention the Wu-Tang response), etc.).

Most beefs today are gimmicks to sell record or get some buzz or publicity. You can also talk about how bad hip hop sells nowadays, the game is so far from its roots and so commercial, yet even commericialism isn't working anymore. Mims had the number one song in the country and sold 70,000 records first week.

Was watching CNBC this morning and they flashed this statistic ... Hip-Hop sales dropped a staggering 21% in 2006 from the previous year.

I'd argue it's the most pirated music, because there's too, much fluff now in an artist's album. You're lucky to get 2 or 3 good songs on a 15 track album. Most consumers aren't going to pay $13.00 for two good songs.
