The plight of Detroit is just so sad. I'm not putting the blame on any political party or philosophy. SE Michigan really should be a thriving and lovely place, and much of the suburban areas are. However, what the region has allowed to happen to Detroit is a disgrace. And the city won't be fixed in our lifetimes.

Although I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt (and you were just pointing out the shear differences in how Hiroshima has recovered from devastation, and Detroit is headed towards it), the blurb at the bottom that says

Contrast.

Who's been running those Japanese cities for the last 64 years?
Capitalists.

Who's been running Detroit?
Liberals.

is just stupid. Here's a tip for all the conservatives and liberals on the board. Please stop posting things you either got in an email or found on a website. They really don't prove what you think they prove.

A lot of why Japan has healed successfully is because we (as a country) shelled out a lot of money to help them recover. That's not a real conservative thing to do (you know, Nation Building). Plus, Detroit (and GM/Ford/Dodge) has been run into the ground because of both the unions (healthcare) and stupid management decisions.

It's not as simple as "captialism (i.e., conservative) good. Liberal (i.e., um..whatever they mean) bad!!"

No, I deleted the post because I saw it was just a typo-error. At least, I assume you mean the post in this thread?

Actually, I never meant this to be a leftie/rightie post. It was just an interesting thing to me that one area of the world went from total devestation to a near model city and another almost the exact opposite- and right under our noses. I thought people might want to opine as to how this can happen.

To me, it has nothing to do with politics, and more so with inept local civil pride and so forth. It's hard to imagine a fine city in a pretty area letting this happen.

As to the post being there and then vanishing, I was jesting. I can't imagine people placing others on 'ignore'.
 
I can put part of the blame on one thing: corruption. And we've seen enough corruption from both sides to know it's not partisan.

Coleman Young ruined Detroit.

It's been a myth that has been dispersed since the war. Most of Japan's recovery is due to their work ethic and smart planning.

Hiroshima may have been run by capitalists but they have universal health care, a thriving communist party, and relatively high tax rates on the rich.

Meanwhile,many of Detroit's problems started during the Reagan administration when GM began closing plants in the state for cheaper labor elsewhere.

BF, to be fair, Detroit's problems started with the first oil embargo in 1973. They ignored the market for fuel efficient cars and have lost market share ever since.

True, and I didn't say it was the sole reason. They were assisted, but their planning and work ethic played a bigger role. But we did dump money in it, and they ran with it. Thats why I said helped. I probably should've said helped get the ball running, and then they improved on it big time.

But I have to point out that you're forgetting the short recovery from the Billy Sims years. Awesome running back...
 
Japanese = will commit suicide if they fail

Detroit = will ask for a raise if they fail

I would say it's this, and they built shitty cars that broke down much more frequently than the Japanese.
 
Detroit is a real piece of shit. Is there any place worse in the United States?

I would guess it's for the same reason some of us make comments about what some of the more conservative posters would "say" in a thread they didn't participate in.
