We flew SW to Mexico and Las Vegas, no problems at all.
We get weather events like this every 3-4 years, lasting for a day or two. So it wouldn't make a ton of financial sense to have a ton of equipment that sits unused for years at a time.
More importantly, because of the Columbia gorge and we sit where 2 rivers meet, predicting weather in situations like this is very difficult. Yesterday morning all of the local news channels were saying the computer models showed snow starting anywhere from 3pm to 6pm. They also said some areas would get a trace and some could see inches.
My stepdaughter was at the expo center yesterday leading a group of students around a career fair, the local branch of the National Weather Service at around 2pm updated their forecast and said snow was coming at 3pm. We texted her and she got her students back to their school and was home in SE Portland by 3:20pm.
The information was out there.
So first of all, why would ANYONE fly Southwest after what happened just a month or so ago?
Second.... people don't pay attention to weather reports, I guess?
Sure, I bet there's tons of flights that are fine.... but they're still a shit company with a bad computer system. I doubt that has changed in just a month or two.
We take Alaska airlines almost every time
My wife doesn't like SW for some weird reason, she's not good at checking in 24 hours before to get decent seats. Pre-married life, I always flew SWA. I dunno about flying them to Hawaii though.
Strangely, she likes Spirit lately as they fly cheap to Dallas. I'll only fly on the big seats on Spirit if I have to take it.
I like Delta the best, then Alaska. We fly Hawaiian to Hawaii usually.
The one time I flew Spirit I promised myself never to fly them again. They were trying to upcharge us on damn near everything

If you do your homework and know what you are getting into and play their game, Spirit is the cheapest way to get from Point A to Point B. You don't HAVE to buy any of the extras. Pack a light bag within their carry-on limits (outlets sell bags that are exactly the size), know that you are going to be cramped into a too-small seat for 2-4 hours, and spend all that money you saved at your destination.
Yeah, they kinda suck, but I bring my own water and I can pack light in a personal item for most short trips. If you can get the big seat in front its pretty good.
Lots of the European airlines I flew last year had the same upcharges (flew Swiss, Lufthansa and Vueling).
Im normally with you on cheapest. We do the air mileage game and pay off the card before any interest is accrued. So the past few trips on Alaska were essentially free. Still have over 95,000 points as well.

Had to abandon my car. Took 2.5 hours to go 15 blocks. Got stuck at the bottom of a hill. Hope my car isn't ruined by the time I have to go get it. No tow trucks for hours and about 8 cars were abandoned in front of me.
Had to walk over 3 miles. Made it home. They said this wasn't gonna start until 7 or 8. I got stuck at 4:45-5:00.
Yeah, I was headed home around that time and walked 10 blocks to the store and then took the bus in it carrying 5 bags of groceries. Crazy.
I don't know how people are still surprised when the city shuts down during snow.

Yeesh man. That's freaking wild. How were the buses as you were walking? Around 102nd and Prescott there was 3 buses on the side of the road before my car finally got stuck a block north lol.
Two went by when I was walking to the store after work. When I got out of the store, it looked a lot worse, but luckily the bus came quickly. It was slow going but I wasn't going too far on the bus the rest of the way.
The lane going towards Gresham was a parking lot. Cars going nowhere and getting stuck...everyone going home. I was luckily headed the other way and traffic wasn't as bad.
Sly's guide to winter driving:
Follow this account on twitter - https://twitter.com/NWSPortland It's the Portland office of the national weather service. Check it often.
Keep a couple of bags of kitty litter from Dollar Tree in your car, they're small and $1.25 each.
Use a real-time traffic monitoring app like Waze.
Stay off the freeways.
The streets to and from hospitals are always plowed first. If a hospital is near where you're trying to go keep that in mind.
Don't listen to people who claim to know how to drive in ice and snow. The people who really know how to drive in it are going to stay home because they know everyone else doesn't know how to drive in it.
Just because you have a Subaru, Jeep, or lifted tiny penis truck doesn't mean shit.
I agree with everything except the rig part. My 2003, V8 4 Runner with all terrain snow tires has traversed through some amazing snowstorms trekking over the cascades and also Lake Roosevelt outside of Spokane during blizzard like conditions. Climbed up and down some crazy hills during snow storms too.
Rear locking differentials are an amazing thing when dealing with the ice
It doesn't matter what you're driving. It can't stop others from sliding into you.

Wanna give an immense shout-out to @PtldPlatypus for saving the day! Got my car pulled up the hill and down the street a bit where I was then able to drive it home. I can't thank you enough! This community really pulls though. Beyond grateful and appreciative.
