The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement officials about a rise in "rightwing extremist activity," saying the economic recession, the election of America's first black president and the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could swell the ranks of white-power militias.

A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines "rightwing extremism in the United States" as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority.

"It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning says.

Interesting they do this yesterday, the day before the "tax-day tea parties".....

Homeland security is watching you, ADP.

It's like the British all over again.

Time for another revolution.

I know you're being sarcastic, but you happen to be right. Of course, it doesn't mean a violent overthrow of our current system, but we're not being served well by the people currently in office. A permanent political class has developed, and it's bad for our Republic.

I meant a violent overthrow, yeah.

An overhaul of the political system, breaking away from a rigid two-party system and careerist/second- and third-generation political families, would be welcome to me. I'm not sure how that can be accomplished, though, with how entrenched the Republican and Democratic parties are.

You mean like Eric Rudolph, who bombed the Atlanta Olympics, bombed a clinic, killing a police officer and maiming a nurse, and bombed a nightclub with a primarily lesbian clientele, injuring a number of people?

Or Oklahoma City?

Murder of doctors in their homes and clinics?

Dragging a man to death because he's black?

The report is talking about violent groups. Not people who vote Republican. Maybe you should read it?

Nah, too much trouble, so much easier to copy/paste from a web site.

You do know what a "group" is, right? A lot of those mentioned above are individuals and/or isolated incidents.

from the bulletin:

(U) Key Findings

(U//LES) The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) has no specific
information that domestic rightwing* terrorists are currently planning acts of violence,
but rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about
several emergent issues. The economic downturn and the election of the first
African American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and
recruitment.

— (U//LES) Threats from white supremacist and violent antigovernment groups
during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry
out violent acts. Nevertheless, the consequences of a prolonged economic
downturn—including real estate foreclosures, unemployment, and an inability
to obtain credit—could create a fertile recruiting environment for rightwing
extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and
government authorities similar to those in the past.

— (U//LES) Rightwing extremists have capitalized on the election of the first
African American president, and are focusing their efforts to recruit new
members, mobilize existing supporters, and broaden their scope and appeal
through propaganda, but they have not yet turned to attack planning.

(U//FOUO) The current economic and political climate has some similarities to the
1990s when rightwing extremism experienced a resurgence fueled largely by an
economic recession, criticism about the outsourcing of jobs, and the perceived threat to
U.S. power and sovereignty by other foreign powers.

— (U//FOUO) During the 1990s, these issues contributed to the growth in the
number of domestic rightwing terrorist and extremist groups and an increase in
violent acts targeting government facilities, law enforcement officers, banks,
and infrastructure sectors.

— (U//FOUO) Growth of these groups subsided in reaction to increased
government scrutiny as a result of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and
disrupted plots, improvements in the economy, and the continued U.S. standing
as the preeminent world power.

(U//FOUO) The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of
military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities
could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists
capable of carrying out violent attacks.

Here's today's "damage control" spin on it all.

Statement by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on the Threat of Right-Wing Extremism

Release Date: April 15, 2009

Office of the Press Secretary
Contact: 202-282-8010

The primary mission of this department is to prevent terrorist attacks on our nation. The document on right-wing extremism sent last week by this department’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis is one in an ongoing series of assessments to provide situational awareness to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies on the phenomenon and trends of violent radicalization in the United States. I was briefed on the general topic, which is one that struck a nerve as someone personally involved in the Timothy McVeigh prosecution.

Let me be very clear: we monitor the risks of violent extremism taking root here in the United States. We don’t have the luxury of focusing our efforts on one group; we must protect the country from terrorism whether foreign or homegrown, and regardless of the ideology that motivates its violence.

We are on the lookout for criminal and terrorist activity but we do not – nor will we ever – monitor ideology or political beliefs. We take seriously our responsibility to protect the civil rights and liberties of the American people, including subjecting our activities to rigorous oversight from numerous internal and external sources.

I am aware of the letter from American Legion National Commander Rehbein, and my staff has already contacted him to set up a meeting next week once I return from travel. I will tell him face-to-face that we honor veterans at DHS and employ thousands across the department, up to and including the Deputy Secretary.

As the department responsible for protecting the homeland, DHS will continue to work with its state and local partners to prevent and protect against the potential threat to the United States associated with any rise in violent extremist activity.

Let's be clear here. Spin was something George Bush did. Do not try to turn put the same label on our current president.

Secondly, anybody who is a racist pile of shit who is in one of these groups deserves every bit scrutiny they get, including being prosecuted and sent to jail.

I admit I am a bigot. I hate racist, and Nazi's in general.

OT and slightly anal, but I can't think of many things less "official" than this website, and yet you post "Unclass/For Official Use Only" info here? Or DHS puts it out for public use?

Either that's grossly wrong, or it needs to be re-classified.
