Yes, Thriftway became Albertson's on Boones Ferry. There is a Thriftway on Stafford near McVey.Nice write-up, Lanny! The only Halverson I knew was Ms. Halverson, my 5th grade teacher @ Palisades Elementary.
Hmmmm...I grew up off McVey....Maple St. The bowing alley I referred to was Palisade Lanes....which is since LONG gone! LOL
I did have my fun days in LO, as well. Upon quitting high school, I was a checker at Keinow's, and quickly worked my way up to management. I then signed on as an Unrestricted Free Agent to become Assistant Manager with Thriftway (now Albertson's, I think).
Mr. Halverson is the one who developed Mountain Park. I remember going out to their island when I was about 10 along with the rest of my class which included Karen Halverson. My eyes popped out of my head when I saw they had an elevator back in the late 50s. What a mansion.Nice write-up, Lanny! First and B is where the original Safeway was. Maybe Keinow's occupied that building. Right across first street from Safeway on the West side was the original location of the Oswego Review.Yes, Thriftway became Albertson's on Boones Ferry. There is a Thriftway on Stafford near McVey. I vaguely remember that bowling alley.... Palisades Lanes on McVey
I don't recall a Kienows. That must have happened after we moved. Was it in that little shopping center across from the Lake theater? That shopping center had a Western Auto and that's where I bought my three speed bike. Keinow's was on B St. Near State St. I believe it's now a drugstore.

@ABM = Atlanta Blazer Man asking about "HOOD-ism's" which in and of itself is seriously off putting and borderline racist if not completely racist, IMO AND, Atlanta is also the 2nd largest majority black metro area in the entire country. I know ABM is a long time member, as am I, and he's come out saying Trump is the "best option" given between the two parties, and starting a "HOOD-ism" thread?. Anyone else catching on to this? Yikes. It adds up so, so, so bad. Sorry ABM. Terrible look. Did one of the Trumpers here recruit you to come back? That they were outnumbered and needed another white dude to balance shit out?***scrolling scrolling scrolling for @dviss1 input***
Nothing. Crap I'll check back later.
This thread is so cringy.
I'd like to clarify that statement. Not "another white dude" as I'm white, but perhaps another Trump supporter?@ABM = Atlanta Blazer Man asking about "HOOD-ism's" which in and of itself is seriously off putting and borderline racist if not completely racist, IMO AND, Atlanta is also the 2nd largest majority black metro area in the entire country. Oh I read it. I saw a lot of deflection from the original intent (through humor and other things). I TOTALLY read through it just to make sure I wasn't wrong. I stand by my statement. I don't feel you really backed up your statement, your intent, and your backing of Trump (in a different thread, which I read as well) and is integrated in my opinion. It doesn't pass the sniff test. Sorry. Again, I know you're a long timer here. And I've never seen this part of you. But I see it now. You're not just some old guy that isn't "aware" of "HOOD-ism's" - I mean seriously. "HOOD-ism's?" Fuckin' A. Wow. So tone def at best. Enjoy Trump.Read through the thread. You might get some clarity.
How does this apply to my post? You cant stop looking in the mirror can you?
I recently saw a Chevy Blazer commercial and noticed one of the dudes referred to the vehicle as, "That's dope." I've heard that term for a number of years now, but thought it was kind of interesting that is was used in a national commercial. I looked up the etymology of the term and found that it appears to have come out of the hip-hop culture in the early 80's:
https://english.stackexchange.com/q...gy-of-dope-meaning-excellent-great-impressive
Anyway, I'm just a pasty white boy having never used this term in the course of discussion, but it caused me to wonder how many other "hood" terms have filtered into the mainstream of American conversation? I'm guessing "cray cray", "da bomb" et al, might be other examples....
My understanding of all of this is that Langston Hughes and guys like Thelonious Monk and Louie Armstrong, Allen Ginsburg, Dick Gregory, Bessie Smith, Professor Longhair and the jazz cats added a wealth of phrases and words to modern language and it stretched way beyond English....you find it in Germany, France, Holland, Ghana...….everywhere....even the word cool....the word dope I'm sure predates the hip hop New York 80s scene but those guys grew up around the jazz cats and the beat poets...poetry always enters language...I doubt it was anymore Run DMC than it was Cab Calloway
As an aside (and somewhat of a generalization)....if Black dads would simply quit checking out of their homes/families...and keep their commitments/responsibilities to their respective wives (or baby mamas) and kids...the so-called "hood" would be in a much better place. /semi-rant

Oh, trust me, we are.Read through the thread. You might get some clarity.
@dviss1 can do a much better job of explaining this than I can. If you want to be enlightened, you should listen to him. What's the problem, again?
How do you have clarity about people you don't know?
Your assertions in this thread are offensive and racist.
When I was in town, the ice cream store was called "24 Flavors". They had the most delicious raspberry ripple ice cream. You could get a single scoop for 5¢.Keinow's was right across the (B) street from Newton's Ice Cream. Remember them?

And yes, that's exactly where the original Safeway store was. Right across 'B' from the ice cream store.
Right behind the Safeway on State street was an ice cream parlor where they had a soda jerk who would serve up all kinds of ice cream goodies including various floats and 3¢ phosphate sodas.
Another one of my favorites was a bakery that had glazed donuts at 5¢ or two day olds for a nickel.
Two other favorites were the A & W across from the baseball field at George Rogers Park and the Broasted Chicken restaurant on the South West corner of State and 'A '. The A & W originally had car hops on roller skates. And I'm here to tell you there is nothing in this world more delicious than broasted chicken especially when the white meat is not over cooked.
Back in the 70s dope meant drugs.

I too played Little League there. I also played a few games at our big rival, Lake Grove grade school. And I also played Gray 'Y' football, through our church, Christ Episcopal church, at George Rogers park. Although incredibly skinny and an overall very small child, I played a defensive lineman because I could dart between the big guys who were way too slow to stop me. Then it was just a matter of grabbing the flag out of the quarterback's back pocket before he could throw his pass.Dude, the A&W Teen and Mama Burgers were the best! I used to play little league @ George Rogers Park. Dem were the days! Thanks for the memories, my friend!
I have no idea what you mean.
