If Nurk is practicing, how long do you think it will be before he plays a game?

I'm assuming they're targeting 10-days or so.... Around Feb 1st / 2nd.
Depends on the schedule I think. They probably want him playing at home first and have a few days before/after without travel to maximize practice and recovery time to evaluate his progress. I would prolly guess they'd wait til after the AS break and return on the 21st of Feb. Not really the best schedule to come back from a long rehab with all these 1 game road trips. They could potentially let him play at home and not on the road to start perhaps.

Oh as @Scalma just pointed out in the other Nurk thread, I wonder if the trade deadline has any impact on when he'll return. I still think a Hassan trade is imminent regardless of Nurk's status. But when Nurk returns might be dependent on if we can get another big back in a trade.

It would be cool if he made his debut February 9th at home, went on the trip but didn't play the first night and played in the 2nd night of the back-to-back. That way he'd have 2 "test" games under his belt before getting a full week off for recovery during the All-Star break.

Shoot this straight into my veins!

This is tremendous news! Hopefully though, it doesn't lead us to just being enough better to draw the #8 seed and get swept out by the Lakers.

On the other side, (Homer Hat firmly pressed on) a #8/#1 upset over the Lakers might be 2nd only to the Title in terms of all-time Blazer great moments.

It is nice to get some good news for a change.
I haven't been very optimistic since the realization three games into the schedule that this year started to smell a little " uh-oh.."
Nurk....is this teams most important player (i believe that) and who knows what effect seeing #27 will have, with the combination of everything else (ariza..collins..the trade deadline) falling perfectly
into place....

My fear is Blazers PR pushing out Nurk news to counteract Neil’s financially motivated trades..
Pretty much what I was thinking. Feb 21.

Nothing has changed... Nurk was expected to come back after all star break. I find it funny that all the Blazers media is hyping his practice after Neil makes a cost cutting trade with one of the expiring contracts that he was hyping as an asset. Feels like a distraction to Neil’s failure...

Is Neil doing your girlfriend?

So now all of a sudden everyone will be ok with Neil doing nothing with the Whiteside contract?

I'm as excited as the next guy about the return of Nurk. But I must ask, why are so many fans talking about trading Whiteside? I doubt Nurk will be able to give us much of anything this year.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Whiteside's performance. Heck, he's leading the league in blocks, and fourth in the league in rebounding. (and that's with 'lazy' effort :) )

With Nurk only getting about $12M, would we expect Whiteside to get much more in the open market? I believe the Blazers have his Bird rights, so they can match any offer. I'd love to see a full strength Nurk and Whiteside on the same team. If that combo doesn't work out next year, we could look to trade Whiteside at that time (if Nurk returns to his full Beast self).

You don't seem to understand Bird rights. We can go over the cap to re-sign Whiteside but he can sign where ever he wants and we don't get the chance to match the offer, that's restricted free agency. I doubt very much that Whiteside will sign here to be Nurk's back up or even split time with Nurk evenly.

I have a reasonable knowledge of the CAP rules. But always looking to learn more.

Yes, Whiteside is a free agent at the end of this year. He could potentially sign anywhere. But as we know, he's had a relatively rocky unstable career to this point. It's looking like he's genuinely happy in Portland and has a good relationship with Dame.

I think there's risks no mater which way we turn. If we're looking to trade Whiteside before the trade deadline so we can trade for another big contract locked in for more years, usually those teams are dumping a bad contract (ie Love). Not a lot of teams are looking to pick up an expiring contract and willing to give away a player on a good contract. There's going to be strings attached.

I'd like to hope for the best case scenario. I get to watch Whiteside in a Blazer uniform for the rest of this season, then get to see us sign him to a solid contract next year. In the meantime, Nurk takes his time coming back.
