I am GLAD you brought this issue up. I saw this too, and thought about posting. My chief concern, is will Aroldis ever be the Fireman Pitcher he was, prior to this crazy serious injury. I know your thinking the same as I Rick. Tony Conigliaro, 1967. Do you remember the Sports Illustrated Cover of Tony's Face from his Hospital Bed, of his half Purple/Black bruised swollen face, and bulging closed eye socket?

I can never forget that incident or picture. I immediately thought will Chapman's career end right here? A injury to the skull, ends most careers. Although we know Aroldis will try a comeback. I believe the Reds are really seriously pushing this one way to far, by saying he could be back on the mound in 2 months. Holy Shit...!!! WTF-are they thinking?

I know when one falls off of a Horse, the best thing to do is get right back on top of the horse.

But MLB is no horse... I worry as much not only about his sight, vision, and worse, any brain damage, or seizures to come in the future. I haven't seen anyone take this kind of a hit, without it basically ending their careers prematurely. Sure Conigliaro came back, redeemed himself 3 years later, yet, only played til 71, (tho' he made a 1 year comeback in 75, then was DFA), after being beaned in the eye in 67. Tony did not play one game in 68, immediately following his ball to the eye.

I wish Aroldis the best. He is no doubt the premier closer, since Mo' retired. Will we see another guy light up a radar gun around 103+, as he did at one time. Will we as Fans, never see Aroldis return to the form, on top of the heap of Closers in the game, or will this too end his career in some way, tho' it may be a slow long decline.

I sure HOPE NOT....there is no more exciting a closer than Chapman, hell maybe not even a more exciting Pitcher.

Now if the Yanks can only land the young phenom Jose Fernandez, from the Marlins.......now that will be the day!!
 
To answer your question, short of a helmet/ mask of some kind, I'm not sure,
 
It's an unfortunate accident but unless you put pitchers in a goalie's mask I don't see how it's prevented.
 
Come on guys, think technology.....a personal forcefield.
 
When basketball players break there nose they wear this clear mask, what its made of or how thick it I don't know but it would at least absorb some of the impact..
 
My biggest concern right now isn't how to protect pitchers in close proximity, these things will always happen. Hell, Fans get clobbered in the head with bats flying, thunk. Balls hit fans, often, how about being a base coach with no glove? Have you ever had to dodge a bullet at your head, with no glove, only your ability to duck, dodge, or pray, to save your ass. My cousin lost a ball in the sun, a routine pop up out, hit him in the cheek, shattered his cheek, a freak accident.

No, my Chief Concern, is Aroldis really going to be ok? I really dont buy a damn bit of the hype, he's going to play in 4-6 weeks. Remember Conigliaro, Fosse, Puckett, all lost eye sight, and or mental prowess.

Both my Son and Wife, had horrible head trauma's. My Son in 87 at 3 yrs of age. My wife in 99, at 40 years of age. Both have suffered with Epilepsy, grand mall to at times, daily or weekly petite mall seizures. My sister in law was in a horrific car accident, was hit head on in her Lexus by a Ford-350 Truck, a year ago Xmas of 2012. She to forever will suffer from seizures. Not only are the anti-seizure meds, hard on the system. Each seizure can delete a part of anyone's memory. Long term effects are the norm, for this type of injury. NTM-my sister in law, is still in a Convalescent Rehabilitation Therapy Home, where she will live the rest of her life. She has 4 kids, a 24 yr. old, a 21 year old, (who had to become a mom overnight, & put her life on hold, to raise her) younger 10 and 13 year old half brother and sister. The wife of my late Father, and his kids.

I don't take Chapman's incident lightly. HE was NO DOUBT the next MO', and probably will never be the same, not long term anway. Any semblance of a long career can as well bet the house on, will fall short, due to this inury to the brain. (Notice, no one's saying how bruised his brain is, only the fracture skull, requiring a metal plate, get real, Reds!)!!!

Arolids was the heir apparent to Mo's Throne, IMHO. Is the next Mo' still Aroldis, I wish so, I pray so, yet my common sense says a travesty of inury will rob Chapman of his glory years ahead in his prime, I hope not tho', I want nothing more than to see Aroldis throw 100+ mph, as the premiere Fireman of his generation. Who can else can be the next Premier Fireman, who is under 30 years of age, in your opinion?? Jansen, Brothers, Cishek Kimbrel, Mujica???? Chapman is 25-6, NOTICE how many closers in the AL are over 30+ years of age. Check the NL, the premiere closers seem to be mostly in the NL, WTF-????

My families Neurologist, once said of the brain, "I have seen people barely hit their heads, and suffer for life, I have seen people fly through the windows of their cars, and land on their heads on the pavement, splitting their skull in a dozen places, and they have no problems". The brain is a delicate unpredictable human computer, in every way.

When viewing the Chapman incident, I can't help but reflect on Tony Conigliaro's being hit in the eye socket by a pitch. That cost him his career pretty much, as Tony said as much, his vision was never the same.

As much, the thunk of the ball on Aroldis skull, was as loud or louder than the crack of the bat...!!!
 
About 10 years ago I was the victim of an assault. The guy was about 6'3 250 lbs & build like a brick shit house, One shot to the face that knocked me out. The blow busted my eye socked, broke my nose & fractured 6 other bones in my face. After all was said & done I was glad the blow wasn't lower where it easily could have broken my jaw. To this day I still get migraines above my left eye & in the cold weather my eye tears up enough where people think I'm crying.

And yeah Rob, I remember the Conigliaro incident like it was yesterday. I really hope Chapman fares a lot better then he did.

Holy Cow, I didn't know of your assault. Do you have any loss of vision in your eye? Shit-Fire, did anyone ever catch the fokker? You are lucky, a wired jaw shut, is the last thing I want to ever see, for anyone.

As well had he hit you even lower, in the esophagus, he could of broke your neck, which would of probably killed you, my friend.

I am really sorry to hear that, migraines from head trauma are pure H-E-L-L. Debilitating too.

This guy I found out had a history of just sucker punching people. usually as he was walking out of a bar which is where I got clipped. And this prick had no conscience, he didn't care if you were male or female. But here's where "PAYBACK'S ARE A BITCH" sheds a whole new light. He only did 6 months for assaulting me BUT.......2 years later he was visiting his brother in Miami & got into a brawl, the story I heard was someone threw him against a dumpster & long story short, he's paralyzed from the waist down. I tell you as someone who needs the use of a chair from time to time, I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but this.........DAMN! had KARMA written all over it.

Your so right, Karma is a BITCH....

We only reap what we sow, and it pleases me not to know anyone is paralyzed, although if there is but one person in the world who deserved a fate he brought on himself, then it would be that asswipe, who sucker punched you.

Honestly, I don't have a clue what the heck a Bothan is, not a shred of a clue either. I was hoping totus would enlighten us. I had to throw that out there, like Jim Mora Sr. did, to the tone of "playoffs, playoffs, your talking playoffs"....
