I'm following this game on Yahoo, but I'm curious to know how the Nets have held Phoenix to just 39 points with just over 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter?

What kind of defense is New Jersey using and what are the player matchups the Suns are struggling with?

Thanks.

I was watching a bit of the game when Prison Break was on commercial breaks, and Krstic was abusing Boris Diaw down low. He'd get great position down low first then spin baseline on Diaw, leaving him flatfooted. Amare is also very passive in coming over to help, and Nenad is most likely the main reason, although I haven't seen much of the game.

PHX is just getting murdered. Nets just has their shots falling, while Suns just keep missing. Since their isn't a game thread, this will be it. Post your game comments here.

I really couldnt tell u im watching it on cbs, but they played well defensively against Det also. Hope this defense continues in the playoffs tho

Yeo that's also true.

The secret to what the Nets are doing is that they are controlling the tempo....forcing to Phoenix to play at a tempo that they do not play. All
Phoenix has left if to score from the perimeter or off turnovers. Also, look
at Nash's stats. Kidd has simply out muscled the guy,; pushed him around.

Yeah, I agree. This would show everyone how important Nash is to the team. He is the initiator of every offensive play and Kidd has done an amazing job on him.

Thanks for the comments, makes a lot of sense because these are the same things Utah did in their comeback win a couple of games ago.

I think Utah exposed all of Phoenix's weaknesses and made a key adjustment in their approach to matchups. Normally teams figure they need to play small to match up with Phoenix, but Utah went big instead and took control of the game.

Seems the keys to beating Phoenix are ...

- Control the rebounding
- Attack the rim
- Get physical with Nash
- Attack Nash on offense
- Limit turnovers

All this helps your team control the tempo of the game and really exploits Phoenix lack of size on the court.

Nash is very important I agree but it also shows that Kidd is still the best PG in the game he has just toyed with Nash tonight and another BIG win for the Nets, don't sleep on them they oculd knock out the giants of the East.

I couldn't tell you what they're doing, but they have played great defensively over the winning streak, and I think they're finally grasping Frank's complicated defensive schemes. They're not allowing teams many wide open shots, therefore they can't heat up or get on a roll. Kidd sparks the defense though, he rebounds great defensively, and consistently is shutting down the other team's best player. They are without a doubt the most underrated defensive team in the league.

The Nets just won back to back against two contending teams.... Bring on Miami and Memphis.

hmmmm.......i say us laker fans take notes just incase we have to face them in the playoffs. huh? shape? :]

Yeah those were my intentions with this thread. I wanted to make sure the Jazz game wasn't my imagination and just a fluke. This is the second time now, a team has beaten Phoenix with the same approach. I'm sure the Laker staff will be all over it.

Exactly. With Stoudemire playing nowhere near his potential, and Thomas out, Krstic had his way with Diaw.

Here are the stats

Kidd 9 pts 10 rebs 7 asts(he owned Nash)
Carter 20 pts 8 rebs 5 asts
Jefferson 16 pts
Krstic 21 pts 10 rebs
Bench Points 42

Well Smush is going to have to become a defensive PG like Kidd ebcause Kidd may be the only PG able to stop Nash, and New Jersey is athleticly able to stick with Phoenix.

Wow, Nash and Amare didn't even score. Amare didn't play much, but still put up 6 shots. Nash played 20 something and I think put up 6 shots too and didn't score.

Shape, about Smush how is he defensively i havent watched many Lakers game. I just dont find kobe shooting most of the teams shots entertaining, anyways I know smush is a great slasher, but defensively I dont know much or anything about him.

The Suns lost by 38 points It would have been more, but Nets just sort of gave up in the end. (they tied 27-27 in the 4th quarter). Nash shot 0 of 5 and had 0 points. Certainly hope Smush could shut out Nash like this, but probably won't happen.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting retep:</div><div class="quote_post">smush isnt that great defensively</div>

yeah, that's why we match up so badly against teams with good point guards. Every point guard seem like John Stockton when they play us.

Our team defense has just been amazing during this winning streak. We see everyone actively moving, not giving anyone open shots. Everyone's helping to cover the weakside, and we're rebounding at a high level (notably Kidd). Kidd's also been pushing the ball up the floor to set the tempo, many times not allowing the half-court defense to settle in. Nenad Krstic, though, is also a reason for the winning. He's been putting up some consistent numbers, and the team is unstoppable when he plays well. The consistent play of Robinson and Planinic wouldn't hurt either.

Vince was the key

i saw the game,
probably the biggest reason the Nets won was the play of Vince - he played out of his mind and played hard - it became clear early on that he was the most talented player by far on the floor and the rest of the Nets seemed to get inspired by that and they all played hard on D, Krstic started getting inspired and the confidence just started to soar for them. vince scored at will over raja bell and shawn marion two guys considered great defenders and he schooled them, then he would hit 3 pointers from 5 feet outside the arc. he demoralized them with his talents. and you could literally see jason kidd getting inspired as the game went on. it was a classic case of why it's good to have a superstar on your team sometimes.

Smush gambles a lot on defense and struggles with the pick and roll. He likes to reach and gets caught on the player's hip which leads to a foul, or the player just rides Smush all the way to the rim.

Players with a quick first step give Smush the most problems, so Nash, Paul, Parker and the like have their way with him. The Lakers have to rely on their first and second defensive rotations to challenge these type of players once they penetrate past Smush.

lawrence frank is a good coach, figured out how to shut the leagues highest scoring team down

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Net coach Lawrence Frank kept looking up at the Meadowlands scoreboard in the third quarter last night, trying to determine if reality and his calculations meshed.
"I was working on my math skills. I was saying, 'Wait a minute, we're up what?' " Frank recalled of seeing his Nets lead by 40-plus points. "No one expected this." </div>

Good to see the Nets enjoying themselves.
