...a win in Utah would be rather significant at this juncture of the season?

The Jazz are 8-3 at home. Plus, it's never been a very friendly place for the Blazers to play.

I dunno, it just "feels" like an important game to me.

(PS: Yeah, yeah, I know, they're ALL important. )

Any game against a division rival is important IMO. We need to win the season series with all teams. You never know what will happen at the end of the season.

I hear ya. That said, sometimes there are games that I say to myself, "If we could just win this game, it'll put us over the hump towards getting to that next level within our season."

I kinda view this one as that type of game. Not certain why, but I just do.

As Cup mentioned over yonder, this lays out my sentiments to a T.

Utah, like you say has always been a tough place to play and it would definitely a very good win as it will accomplish 2 things, a win against a division rival at a place we have a hard time winning and could help establish the confidence to go on the road and win more games. If we set the tone defensively I think we will take care of them.

Good reason to. They are in our division, have a 1.5 game lead on us, and have a really good home record. So far we suck on the road. Winning that game should put a spark under our ass. At least I hope so! Lol

It's important, but it's predictable what is going to happen.

I agree, it is a big game.

I think the team thinks it's important too, enough to alter their regular road routine and go to Utah early to acclimate and practice on the off day.

That said, the younger players had best stay away from any shopping malls. ;)

You guys do recall that incident, right?

I think so, but refresh my memory.

I'll keep checking for the nitty gritty. For now, I found this:

1993 - late January
Teenage girls
Three teenage girls tell police about a wild night in Salt Lake City with Trail Blazers Tracy Murray, Dave Johnson, Jerome Kersey and Reggie Smith. A Utah prosecutor is convinced the lanky foursome had sex with the under-age mall rats but drops the charges for lack of evidence, proving the Blazers had more luck in court than on it. One 16 yr. old claimed she had sex with 3 players, another 16 yr. old claimed she had sex with one player and a 15 yr. said she didn't have sex with anyone. Utah police couldn't find any evidence. Blazers suspended Tracy Murray three games and fined three other players an undisclosed amount.

No Trail Blazers Will Be Charged : Jurisprudence: Team suspends and fines two players and fines two others. Utah authorities have insufficient proof in teen sex case.

February 12, 1993|From Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Trail Blazers fined and suspended two players and also fined two others Thursday for their involvement in a teen-age sex scandal in Salt Lake City.

Hours earlier, Utah authorities had announced that they would not press criminal charges in the case.

Rookies Dave Johnson and Tracy Murray were fined and suspended without pay for three games. Starter Jerome Kersey and rookie Reggie Smith were fined.

Murray left UCLA after his junior season last year to make himself eligible for the NBA draft.

Geoff Petrie, the Trail Blazers' senior vice president for operations, would not disclose the size of the fines, but said they were substantial.

"We do not take breaches of our policies or team rules lightly and feel deep regret that some of our players have shown poor judgment, and for that we apologize," Petrie said at a news conference at which the club identified the players for the first time.

Salt Lake County Attorney David Yocom said that his office would not press felony charges against any player for having sex the night of Jan. 23 with two 16-year-old girls because there was no proof that the girls had been coerced or enticed to participate. According to the players, the girls had lied about their ages, claiming to be older.

Three girls, two 16-year-olds and a 15-year-old, said they had spent the night in a hotel with several Trail Blazers. They gave authorities the first names of seven men, six of which corresponded to the first names of players on the Portland roster. The girls told of the incident after they were picked up for shoplifting the next day. The investigation eventually settled on four players.

According to Yocom, one 16-year-old said she had sex with three Trail Blazers and the other said she had sex with one. The 15-year-old said she did not have sex with any of the players.

One of the 16-year-olds had said in an interview that she had been coerced into sex, but Yocom said the 15-year-old told investigators she had witnessed the incident and that her friend had been a willing participant.

"The player had said basically 'May I?' and she said, 'Yes,' " Yocom said.

Yocom said he felt he could have successfully pursued misdemeanor charges of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor, but the two girls did not wish to go through to the public exposure that would have come with a trial.

The suspensions will have little practical effect on the team, because Johnson and Murray rarely play.

Kersey and Smith both issued statements apologizing for their actions.

Kersey, 30, in his ninth NBA season, insisted that all he had done was meet the girls.

"I used very poor judgment by putting myself and the team in a position to be associated with a situation that tarnished the good name and image of my teammates and the Trail Blazers' franchise," he said. "I deeply regret the negative impact this has had on everyone, especially the community that has always supported us."

Smith, who made the team as a free agent, said he wanted "to apologize for having any involvement in a situation that has damaged the positive reputation of a great team. I used poor judgment and you can be assured that I look on this as a very important learning experience."

All games are equally important. They count the same in the standings even on the last night of the year.

Yes every game is a must win, but games against division rivals and conference playoff contenders are more important IMO. One of those games could take us from 6th to 2nd

Beating the Pistons could take us from 6th to 2nd too. They're all the same.

Winning the division is meaningless. HCA is determined by who has the best record, not who has the highest seed.

They may be equally important on paper - in the standings - but, I would venture to say that some are not equally important in the players' and/or fans' minds. There definitely are watershed games. Plus, ANY win over the L*kers has greater significance than any other win. You know, as Bruce Hornsby once sang, it's just the way it is.

In any given season, players can always look back and reflect on certain games (or series of games) that had an impact on the season at large.

That's not entirely true.

Losing to the Jazz gives the Jazz a win and the Blazers a loss.

Losing to the Pistons only gives the Blazers a loss.

So a loss to a conference rival DOES hurt more in the standings.

Well yeah; but lets say at the end of the season the Blazers were tied with 3 other teams. If we hold the tie breakers; or have a better division; or a better conference record; we win the tie breaker.

I think pretty much everyone expects a Jazz win, if somehow the Blazers can get out of their road game rut and steal a win, it will be a much bigger for them than a win for the Jazz will be. I plan on enjoying several pints watching this one!

The way we've played on the road so far, any road win is significant IMO.
