<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BrewCityBuck @ Apr 9 2007, 12:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I think it's safe to say from reading this thread and from my own experience that the Catholic church does a terrible job of teaching it's young members....and this is why so many people are leaving the church, from reading this thread so many of you guys have had to go to church for years but don't even believe in god, there's nothing wrong with thinking for yourself but that's not good for the Catholic church's future at all. I went through religion school from when I was like 5 to 16...and I know very little about god or the bible, or teachings....most kids/young people I went to church with can't even answer simple questions about the faith....it's hard for kids to relate to it. A large majority of basic god believers in this country are the babyboom generation....how many kids from this generation are going to go to church? You know?</div>Yeah, religion is definitely going downhill. 71% of the country thinks religion should have no more influence (or less influence) than it does now on our country and 39% are dissatisfied with organized religion. In 1980 40% of the country thought the bible was the actual word of god and 10% thought it was fables. Now only 28% of the country thinks it is the actual word of god and 19% think it's fables. 68% of the country thinks that the bible is not literal and shouldn't be taken word for word, as opposed to 55% in 1980.The most amazing thing to me is when kids who have had religion jammed down their throats their whole lives don't believe in God. THAT is not a good trend for organized religion.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>No kidding...A couple pages back in this thread a member said he helped with a summer Christian camp and then said that he's atheist...I mean....what the hell...</div>Yeah, I remember in fourth grade being prevented from hanging out with one of my friends by his parents because they thought I turned him atheist (he had come to the conclusion on his own actually). They beat him a lot to try to get him to believe in god but he had realized that there wasn't a god. When fourth graders give up religion even when they're being beaten then you know that religion is fighting a losing battle

I go to Church almost every Sunday. 10 Commandments say to Keep Holy the Sabbath day, thats telling us to go to Church. I dont think you can be religious without going, because going is the only way to acknowledge the Lord.

Going with Pestilences and BCBs posts, I believe organized religion is so messed up. You have racist churches and everything. And as mentioned, some of the stuff people do in church is so off from religion its not even funny. I believe that the Bible shouldnt be taken word for word. And realisticly, the King James Bible has several flaws in it. Thats why I want to learn hewbrew or latin so I can read from the somewhat "original". For example, in the Kings James version, it states that Moses crossed the "Red Sea", but people have gone back and say theres evidence that Moses crossed the "Reed Sea", which is above Egypt and Israel...not between it. AND the Reed Seas waters are more shallow, some saying then people could walk in it....I really think theres alotve kids out there twisted by catholic school, and organized religion itself. IMO, religion should be more personal than anything, and its seems like its not that at all with many people. And people should also realize the world doesn't revolve around them, that everything that happens to you, good or bad, affects so many other people.

I volunteered at a Salvation Army summer day camp last summer. I'd say 99.5% of the kids that go there aren't even christian. Just a lot of chinese kids there because they're parents need a place to put them during the summer. The parents don't give a crap about the religion thing either, they just want someone to watch their kids as if it was a babysitting place or something. I dunno if I can call myself an Athiest, because I do believe in God, sometimes. maybe a half

I am not religious at all. I am a Christian, which is a follower of Jesus just to clear anything up that someone might think. When Jesus was here on earth, He did not like the religious! The religious leaders tried to kill Him and persecute Him constantly because He went against the teachings that they had implemented and instead did what God had told us to do. Some people think that you have to be super religious to go to Heaven and go to church absolutely all the time and always be perfect, but you don't. You just have to accept Christ into your life and have a relationship with Him to be able to get to Heaven.

My family is very religous. We go to church every week and we've done a lot of missions stuff and I'm in the youth group.

I can only speak from two fronts. One is the philosophic view of say, Spinoza, Anselm, or Descartes. You know, the ontological argument that says nothing greater can be conceived than God, therefore God's existence is irrefutable. Atheism is attractive, but it ignores the order that springs from chaos and vice versa. Ultimately, it only leads to sour graps nihilism. As Spinoza wrote, God has infinite attributes in infinite length, while we only have access to two limited versions of those attributes - extension and thought. With only these two attributes, I don't have the balls to stand by the idea that there is no God. I have little faith in my own knowledge in comparison with even the idea of a perfect, infinite being. I'm also a fatalist. I believe that it's alredy written, done, and said and that God isn't within us, but quite the opposite. There is also the business of my personal experience. When my energy and tuning was right, I've experienced and participated in what I consider to be miracles, or paths already laid by God.

Not at all. Only thing religion is good for is getting out of stuff. "I can't work that day because I have to go to church' or some stupid bullsh** like that hahaha.

Don't read the bible, that thing is trash. How are we supposed to believe that a man parted the red sea? That a snake could not only talk but trick a woman, who in our society today has way too much power, into being banished from some mystical garden? That 2 people created by some super being ended up creating a whole race? That people used to live to 500, 700, 900 years old? That Egypt had a plague where the rivers turned to blood, and all the 1st born were killed? That a man named Jonah was eaten by a whale and survived for a number of days then was spit out safely on the shore? That a man turned 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread into food enough for 5000 people? That bushes caught fire and started talking? That a guy had ridiculous strength that came from his hair? That a man could walk on water? That a man was thrown into a pit with hungry lions and not eated or even touched? Don't get me totally wrong, the bible has good messages scattered throughout, but the stories are just ... fantastic is the word I'll use.

But the thing with all the stories is that God's power made them all possible.

Why can't he make that stuff happen in recent times. Have you noticed there haven't been any fantastic stories like that in the past 2-300 years? Probably a lot longer, I don't know history that far back.My father, I should mention, is a pastor at a church. The thing he told me is that I shouldn't look at 'it's 4 lions not eating a guy', he said to just try and find the underlying message and stuff. But there's not really an underlying message to 'jesus gave 5000 people enough to eat and then some out of 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread'. That just f*cking makes no sense.

Weren't they still thinking it was flat when the explorer guys found America?Again, I don't really feel like getting into this. Just something to think about.

And science has proven that the Earth is round anyway. Science over time proves things. You can't prove 90%(or so) of the bible to be true.Though to be honest, I'm not bugged by people believing in the bible. It's the stupid fake bastards who go to church to show off their new outfit or try and get compliments and all the assholes who wear crosses and pretend to believe but wouldn't go out of the way to do something to prove their faith. Religion's just kind of a side thing, something to do on sundays. If you really truly believe it and follow the bible, then I respect you. But it's dumb fucks like kanye west who 'rap about jesus' and then whine that they didn't win a grammy, and have loads of money and keep it for themselves and buy more bling bling that piss me off and make me hate religion. Also, the religion wars piss me off. Islams think the Israelis are wrong, Israelis just KNOW somehow the Islams are wrong, and so hey! let's just kill each other, why not?
