How to Fix your Broken Video Card in the Oven!! Part II

Ok so for those who remember my video card crapped out in late December last year. The fix is supposed to last for 3-6 months. Well it finally crapped out again today so....BACK IN THE OVEN!!!

There are a lot of different opinions in that thread on exact technique. I deduced 385 degrees for 8min 30sec was the way to go.

So this time I documented the process, hopefully this can help somebody out in the future.

My non-functioning video card....micro-fractures in the solder points from heating and cooling have made the contacts on the fritz

Preheat oven to 385 degrees
Unscrew everything you can from the video card...clean off the old thermal paste underneath the heat-sink with rubbing alcohol. Used compressed air to clean off dust. (gold heatsink still attached in this pic was removed too)

place aluminum foil on cookie sheet. Make 4 aluminum foil squares to place your video card on. Try to position the squares so the hold up the video card by its frame

Ready for the oven

place video card with all the caps and stuff facing down

Place in preheated oven at 385 degrees for 8min 30sec (things could fall off it you let it go too long). Immediately turn off the oven and open the oven door. DO NOT MOVE VIDEO CARD AT ALL FOR AT LEAST ONE HOUR. This lets everything resolidify.

Put fresh heatsink grease on video card cpu (sorry no pic, very very thin layer of it), Reassemble

Boo-yah...ready to kick ass and chew bubblegum

This is the 2nd time I've done this on the same video card. I was told this fix lasts from 3-6 months....my first bake fix lasted 5 months.

Just for peoples information, it doesn't work with everything. I have a broken toe, and I put it in the oven at 385 for 30 minutes, and nothing happened.

lol that has been the running joke since the first time I did this...If ANYTHING is broken then "throw it in the oven!"

Ive heard of some people buying high end "broken" video cards on ebay for dirt cheap and throwing them in the oven...Interesting gamble....$400 video card for $40

For this same reason dont buy a working used one off ebay...lol

Did you apply some new heatsink grease before reinstalling the cooler (I didn't see it mentioned in your instructions)? If not, your fix might not last 5 months this time. At the very least you won' t be able to overclock your card as much as the GPU will be running several degrees hotter than it would be with the heatsink grease in place.

Just did it again for a 3rd time, and it worked for a 3rd time...each time it has lasted 4.5months. By next time I think Im gonna do a full new build
