There are Halloween traditions people everywhere know and love: trick-or-treaters going door-to-door on the hunt for candy, spooky haunted houses, light-hearted office costume contests, and — last but not least — $3 Chipotle burritos. Make that Booritos.

This year, Chipotle is switching up their longstanding holiday tradition with a spooky twist. In order to highlight the company’s stance against additives — such as chemicals, processing aids, artificial colors, and artificial flavors — they’re asking customers to show off their own scary “unnecessary” additions. In order to score a $3 burrito, bowl, salad, or tacos, participants will have to dress in a costume with an odd extra something. Think: Cat ears with your superman suit or a mustache with your fairy costume.

“We are challenging our customers to learn about the unnecessary ingredients used in typical fast food,” said Mark Crumpacker, Chipotle’s chief creative and development officer.

To advertise this year’s spooky twist on their classic Boorito fundraiser, Chipotle also produced a short film called “Endless Line,” in which a customer enters what appears to be a Chipotle, but is in fact a “Cheapotle,” serving processed and chemical-filled fast food such as “petroleum-enhanced beans” and “extra butane” in order to cut costs. The video ends with a text proclaiming “The unnecessary additives in most fast food are creepy,” driving the point of their campaign home.

In addition to doing your stomach a favor, an added bonus of the fundraiser is that up to $1,000,000 from the Boorito proceeds will go to the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, which is dedicated to providing resources for and promoting a more sustainable food future.

To cash in on the Boorito deal, visit any Chipotle on Halloween from 5 p.m. to close in costume with your own interpretation of something “unnecessary.” Then, bask in the joy of your reduced-price burrito and the feeling that you’re indulging in fresher, less processed food than the typical scary fast food fare.

Indeed. Next week's lesson: salmonella.
